  • Arlo doorbell does not work with existing doorbell chimes
    by

from Regina, SK on March 17, 2019

I have a 4-camera Arlo Pro 2 system, so thought the Arlo doorbell would be a good addition to the system. Unfortunately, after the install, I discovered that the Arlo system does not work with an existing doorbell chime. The instructions indicate that the Arlo doorbell is compatible with both digital and electro-mechanical chimes using a setting on the Arlo unit to indicate which one you have in place. After installing the Arlo doorbell and updating firmware to the latest level, it triggered the existing chime to sound continuously regardless of the setting used. Based on other comments on the Arlo support and community site, this is a common problem with the Arlo doorbell. Apparently, the resolution is to acquire the Arlo chime as well - which shouldn't be necessary. Not me...I'm returning the Arlo doorbell. Maybe a future release will correct the problem.

  • Must Have Add-on to any Arlo Pro Set-Up
    by

This is "the" go to add-on to any Arlo Pro set up, in my opinion. My camera (Arlo Pro) is actually mounted on the inside looking out (for a number of reasons) so I never really got to use the motion sensor and had to activate the live feed whenever someone came to the door. It was a workaround that I was hoping to eventually solve and, voila, here is where the Arlo Doorbell shines. Once installed to work with my mechanical doorbell (took literally a few minutes to install), the doorbell now works as an outdoor motion sensor, activating my camera to record whenever motion is detected at the front door. If someone rings the doorbell, I get a call on my phone or my wife's phone and get a video feed with two-way communication, if desired. I leave my audio settings on mute so that the person at the door only hears me if I want them to. I generally just use the video feed to see whose at the door. I have read a number of negative reviews about the reliability of the call upon ringing the doorbell but I have not experienced anything but stellar performance and reliability thus far. I also read a review about there being no tactile or haptic feedback to alert the person that he or she has hit the doorbell button. I frankly don't understand the complaint here. There is a small but noticeable depression upon pushing the button. I don't think you can miss it unless you've lost all sense of touch in your finger. In any event, I have no issue with the button and frankly think that this doorbell feels very well constructed. In the end, I highly recommend this add-on for anyone who has an existing Arlo Pro setup. Anyone who is thinking of entering this area of smart home technology, definitely consider a combination package of Arlo Pro cameras used in conjunction with this doorbell. I prefer it much more than the video doorbells I have tried in the past which did not function as well as this combination of products from Arlo.
