An awesome little laptop!

I picked up a Geek Squad open-box unit a couple of weeks ago and I love it! It has a great screen, fast processor, lots of connectivity options, solid ergonomics and - thanks to its compact size and super light weight - effortless portability. The fan isn't dead silent but it is whisper quiet. It's a good buy at regular price and an even better value at an open-box price.

Review- zenbook ux430

Pros: Very light weigh, beautiful matte screen, nice keyboard and track pad Cons: The noise is unbearable. Actually returning this laptop because of how annoying the coil whine and the fan sound is. Overall the specs are really good, nothing super special but for the price range youre getting a i5 7200u with a 256gb ssd. This laptop would get a 4 star if not for how loud this is. Honestly a little disappointed at asus for not caring much about quality on their lower end zenbooks.

Exactly what I needed

Perfect for a student looking to multitask. Comparable to the macbook air. Battery life could be better. Fan is not an issue, it can't be heard except if you're in a silent room.

Best under $1000 Windows ultrabook

- Very thin and light laptop when you consider the dual core i5 it packs in. - Only downside would be the small 256Gb storage but can be easily replaced with another m.2 ssd storage unit. - INCLUDES A FINGERPRINT READER FOR EASY LOG-IN. - Small bezels and feels likes the Macbook Pro of Windows laptops. - Remember to disable the ambient light sensor to get the full brightness of the laptop. (Fn + A) - Sleek look and looks like an expensive laptop with the aluminum unibody design. - Fan can get loud at times but download Notebook Fan Control to quiet the fans. Choose the Zenbook UX31A config to do so. - Back-lit keyboard is a plus.

Perfect laptop if it weren't for fan noise and coil whine

PROS: -Amazing 1080p screen with accurate colors, high levels of brightness, and amazing viewing angles. Some prompts or program UIs may appear low resolution. This is NOT because of the screen (as some reviews have suggested), but rather an issue with DPI scaling. -Impressive speakers from Harmon Kardon. They can get quite loud; I rarely go past 20. -Responsive keyboard and trackpad. Be warned that the keyboard is bilingual. The backlit keyboard has three brightness settings. -Fast boot times and R/W speeds. The SSD in my purchased laptop is a Micron 1100. -Fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. -Lightweight. There are not many 14" ultrabooks on the market (LG gram, XPS 13, x360) that are under 3 lbs. -Long battery life: I average about 8-9 hours on a full charge with light browsing, school work, and video watching. CONS: -The power button placement. I have hit it often when trying to press delete. Not a big deal though; just have to get used to it. -This laptop can run hot under load. On idle, the CPU averages around 37-40 degrees C. Under load, it can peak around 75 C. The fan is located in the upper right quadrant of the keyboard. Both the CPU and GPU are cooled by a single heatsink. For this reason, the upper left quadrant of the keyboard, where the GPU is located, is the hottest part, especially when plugged in to the AC adapter. -Since the laptop can get hot, the fan is ALWAYS on. This is both a software and hardware issue. There has been no BIOS update for this. You can install Notebook FanControl, and change the fan speed profile so that it doesn't turn on until 50 degrees C. But even then, at 12.5% speed, it is quite audible. Even running the simplest of task will turn the fan on. -Coil whine... almost all ultrabooks (notoriously the XPS 13) are plagues with this issue. In the upper left quadrant of the keyboard (GPU), you can hear a high pitched screeching noise (like an old HDD writing). This is caused by inductors resonating at an audible frequency due to high passing current. It is especially bothersome in a quiet room. You can hear it the most when scrolling through a web page. There is no fix for this since it depends on the quality of the parts and how well they were installed during manufacturing. It really is the luck of the draw. Because of the fan and the coil whine, I had to return the laptop. I can't bring this laptop to a lecture without the fear of making too much noise. Perhaps I am oversensitive about the issue, so I highly recommend you try the laptop out for yourself and judge for yourself.
