Doesn't compare to my 2016 Asus UX305. Returning.

SSD not working

Bought this laptop for only 14 month, the SSD stopped working. Have to buy another one to replace damaged SSD.

Not Worth Your Money

Honestly, I bought this laptop about 13-14 months ago, mainly because I know Asus is reputable and usually comes out with good products....but not this one. Issue #1: Coil Whine like almost everyone else has stated. Super annoying and ridiculous considering the fact that I can't even go through a web page without hearing this awful sound. Issue #2: Random shutdowns that result in loss of work and a waste of time. I am hearing that others are also having this issue, and in order to start it up again, we need to hard reboot the laptop. This is unacceptable as Asus is a major company that is known for quality motherboards, etc. Issue #3: Keyboard is very flimsy, my enter key has broken, and there is literally no online store that sells the Canadian ENTER key, which makes my life as a student even more difficult as I'll have to ship this damn thing out to fix it. Issue #4: Overheating......As others have said, this laptop is prone to run hot. I've noticed that even on idle, with no programs running, this laptop gets hot, again, unacceptable for a thousand dollar (Including Taxes) laptop. I expected better from Asus, and I'm sad to say that I have given up on them. They should really just stick to making components instead of building crappy laptops that most people end up complaining about. Even though I am a windows person, I would suggest buying a Macbook for couple of hundred dollars more as it will last you years! Horrible experience and a waste of money. I've gotten to the point where I am wasting time writing this review in order to warn others to not buy this laptop.

Was I wrong a year ago!!!

On Nov 24, 2017 I left a positive 5 star review after using this unit for 2 weeks. Now in just over 13 month I totally regret this purchase. Basically the unit is going to trash. One month after warranty expired unit is having inconstant reboot / shut down problem. Geek-squad took a look at it and advised that it is a hardware problem which will require to replace the mother board (cheaper to buy a new laptop) or a possibility of a broken ribbon cable between the base and the screen which is at least a few hundred dollars repair.

Great at first, quality falls quickly

I purchased my Asus Zenbook only 3 months ago, and at first, the battery life (~8 hours) was great, and it performed well during lots of simultaneous tasks. Within 3 months though, the battery life has dropped to 4 hours (after painstaking efforts to only charge the laptop when it was fully dead and then to 100%) and the computer has already crashed multiple times during regular work (I do not game). I had definitely thought I was upgrading from my previous laptop but do not think the Zenbook will realistically last me more than a year or so, much to the chagrin of my wallet.

Amazing Performance, Not so Good Build

Love this laptop, super fast even for photo/video editing and light gaming. It does heat up under pressure so note that. Battery life is unfortunately rarely more than 3 hours..which is horrible. And sometimes has issues with Fingerprint reader. Other than that, I love the day to day performance and the experience is really amazing. I wish it had some high quality metal body, I feel like my 5 years old UX31A feels much more premium than this plastic laptop, but again I think the good performance and screen outweighs all the negatives at this price point.

  • from Brampton, ON

Great Laptop but...

I spent hours reading reviews about this laptop since I needed a solid work laptop that I could bring with me all day. It is very light, fast, excellent bright screen with high accuracy. All is good except two things. Thermal and Coil Whine. After spending hours reading reviews and watching videos, I heard about a problem with Coil Whine. I decided to purchase this laptop anyway to give it a shot. After turning it on for the first time and plugging it in, I immediately noticed that the bottom of the laptop gets REALLY HOT. I could not touch it for longer than 5 seconds. This is an issue because it causes other vital components of the laptop to over heat which decreases the life of the laptop. Also, coil whine is noticeable when doing day-to-day tasks. It is annoying and fan noise is ridiculous as well. Although this laptop has many great features, I would not recommend purchasing it. I ended up returning my unit :/

Very please with the Asus Ux430UA

I bought this ultrabook three months ago and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I am a student and I was looking for a light device with a long-lasting battery life for school and this ultrabook fit the bill perfectly. Actually, I was surprized of how long the battery last: over 12 hours! Although the SSD is a SATA and not a PCIe, my computer is very fast and reliable. The screen is beautiful, the trackpad great and the keyboard is soft, confortable to use does not generate too much noise when tapping. The speakers sound amazing too, they projects loud crisp and clear for videos and music. Finally, the fingerprint sensor works well; I LOVE the ease it provides to open the computer. I had been on the fence before purchasing the device because of all of the reviews about SSD noise and coil whine, but I have had no problem with mine so far. I can hear a small crackling from the SSD when I put my hear right up to it or during moments of absolute silence, but I don't expect a machine to be 100% noiseless. No problem with fans either or with heat. The charger (not the computer) will become very hot during the charging process, but then will go inert once fully charged. Overall, I am very please with my device. It's a good product for the price!

  • from London, ON

Yes but no...

Bought this laptop and exchanged it with the exact same model and still got the same issue. The SSD for some reason is making static noises whenever it is active. Other than this issue, this is an amazing laptop with great looks and amazing speeds and feels.

The Fan complaints are real...

My friend bought this laptop last year and it worked perfectly, so I decided to buy one this year as well. I looked at the reviews before buying it and a few people said that the fan was way too noisy. I ignored these reviews. My laptop sounds like a wind tunnel. I open it in class (even with nothing running on my laptop), and literally everyone across the room can hear it. It never stops running and its really unbearable, especially when your just trying to watch a video.

Asus UX430U- Screen broke apart from keyboard

I bought Asus notebook UX430 in may 2017 and today ie Sept 5 2018 in just 15 months with normal use its screen broke apart from keyboard. I have to duck tape it together. The hinge,s plastic seems to be of very cheap material. I am very disappointed. I spend 1000 dollars and it lasted only 15 months. Even more interesting,I called Asus support and after checking serial no. Asus rep told me ,my warranty expired in April 2017, that means even before I bought it from best buy. Was a used refurbished piece was sold to me as new by best buy?

Bad Lot or what?

Tried two units. Within about 4 days, left each charging for > 6 hrs. First one was almost hot enough to burn me when taking back to store -- after being unplugged from charger for at least 90 min. Made a nice POP as I carried it to car. Would have been afraid to leave in the house! The second arrived at store (had to order a replacement in -- no more in stock) about 5 days later. Again, after a couple days, left in plugged into charger overnight and so hot! Scary that it won't just go inert when battery is fully charged?? Took it back and moved on to another make. Both were very hot and would not boot. Did not cool off in a reasonable time while a) off and b) unplugged. Disappointing since we had a good experience with a 13" flip Asus and other Asus products. Two tries and voted with my feet. Cudos to Best Buy -- never an issue returning these potential meltdowns.

Awesome Ultrabook

I have this laptop for past 4 months and this machine is very pleasant to use. It is fast, reliable, very light weight and have good performance under the load. I had problem with the sound crackling after owning it for two month and the Asus tech support was super helpful to repair the product. I was sent pre-paid shipping label for overnight shipping to Ontario and the whole motherboard was replaced and shipped back to me within a week. Now it is working with no issue. Overall I am fully satisfied with this laptop performance and it is the cheapest good quality laptop you can purchase in the ultrabook category. If you are looking for new ultrabook then certainly give it a shot and if you do happen to have any issue then the support is excellent to fix the issue.

Amazing Ultra Book

Okay this ultrabook is amazing many people are writing reviews about the coil crackling but its an easy fix you dont need to return it or anything you have to adjust the power settings, it doesnt mean that your asus is damaged or anything. The ultra book is awfully amazing especially for its price and runs extremely well! Only con that i can say about it is that it heats up which is normal but its rated 4 out of 5 stars because i think that asus could of invested in another fan or more cooling pipes inside but for its price its far above expectations. i rated it 4 stars only cause i cant half star. 4.5 / 5 ! Great product!

Pictures are of American Model

Canadian models have a Bilingual French Keyboard which reduces the size of the "shift" and "enter" key in half. It also adds a lot of clutter to the keyboard by having both languages on several of the keys. I'm returning the laptop and will wait to buy it in the US on my next trip! Will also save the tax!

  • from Calgary, AB

Good travel laptop

It's so light and powerful. I usually have 30+ tabs open on my browser with other programs running with no heating problems. Bought it last May (2017) and I'm still very happy with it.

  • from Halifax, NS

Sometimes Glitchy

I really want to love this laptop. It works fantastic in all departments except for the display. About 2 months after the laptop was bought (bought new) it started this annoying habit where if the display screen shuts off (Sleep, hibernate or lid close) it will not turn back on 90% of the time. The power button won't work and plugging it in to power also does nothing. I have to do a hard reset every single time which is getting incredibly annoying, as I've lost a lot of work. I'm going to be sending it off for repairs to see if it can be fixed.

  • from Red Deer, AB

Runs HOT

Not many people have said anything about the extreme heat this thing gives off. Maybe I got a dud, but after windows updates I could barely touch the bottom of the laptop let alone put it on my lap. The laptop also emits a strange noises that one person on here described as a coil noise. Its a bad electronic noise ether way. Ended up with a Vivobook, much happier so far.

  • from Prince Albert, SK

This laptop is everything I was looking for.

I've had this laptop for over 4 months and its proven to be perfect for all my expectations and needs. When I first bought it the display lighting was low. I thought of returning it for that reason. But I went into "display settings" and removed the check mark in "to change brightness automatically" and voila, the screen went very bright. The other complaint I've been reading about is the fan is too loud. My laptop has been totally silent. So no complaints there either. Overall, this laptop is great. It's quick and nimble in its operation and it startup and shuts down fast. It's perfectly compact and light enough to carry around in my backpack unnoticed.

I've never had a more horrible experience with a laptop as much as I did with this ASUS. I bought one, returned for a different one (thinking the first one was defective) but ended up returning the second one too. HP, although with an older processor works 10 times better! Initially I went to purchase this HP that I had reserved but the sales rep convinced me the ASUS was better due to its 8th gen processor....ITS A LIE! Something is def wrong with the hardware. Issues -Battery did not last at all compared to this HP i'm using,,not even a day -the laptop overheated continuously -suddenly shut down and would end up with a blue screen and flashing keyboard lights -had issues with the fn keys -not responsive Pro's -it was very light weight I have nothing against Asus, it was my first time trying it but never again. HP is the way to go in my opinion.

THis is a piece of crap

Overloaded with spam, crappy systems, I had to load all my programs twice and they always revert to the factory crap programs for the default. I cannot believe the amount of popups. I use this to travel and work, its much less useless than an abacus. Do not buy this machine for any price, if these people ar elooking for incredible this is it! Incredible that you charge that much for something that should be inthe garbage.

Ok. Surprisingly good for gaming. Thermal throttling when playing for 2 hours.

It has a decent keyboard, good trackpad and screen, and good CPU. Very good for gaming even though its a laptop. CSGO runs at 200fps at highest settings. Thermal throttling after 2 hours, even if inactive, get very very hot but once u turn the game off and move the bottom onto a cooler surface ok in 5 minutes top. Fans get pretty loud when playing games, but get quiet after 5-10 minutes. Picked this over other laptops for the fingerprint sensor. Doesn't work at all. Never has worked. Clean it and my fingers. Tried every other finger. Absolute trash fingerprint sensor. The audio quality is one of the best for a laptop. Compares to my marshall wireless speaker. Not even comparable to Bose speakers though, unless u go louder. If u want a good fingerprint sensor, this is not the computer for u, unless there is an easy solution to fix this problem. An EASY solution, and not a 5-page instruction online that has some coding and downloading mess.

For those concerned about the brightness of the screen...

Have noticed a couple of reviewers expressing concern about the brightness of the screen - just turn off 'Auto brightness' in the Display settings, and the screen gets MUCH brighter. To do this, just hold down the 'Function' key - 'Fn' - and press 'A'. Or, you can go into the Display settings (if you right-click anywhere on the Desktop it will bring up a menu with Display settings as an option) and un-check Auto-brightness. The display actually gets quite bright.

  • from Vancouver, BC

Would like to give it 5 stars but it has a few problems...

Overall it is exceptional value compared to competitors. Great specs, and generally better build quality. However the unit I received had a slightly bent chassis meaning it doesn't sit perfectly flat on tables etc... The lid is also extremely scratch prone. I'd love to give it 5 stars but it feels a bit too fragile. Otherwise its pretty good.

the display is dark

I really like the laptop, its working perfectly, I just really don`t like the display. very dark!! and it is starting to bother me :/

it has coil whine after 2 month, fan lound and gets very hot

  • from Toronto

It is decent for an average user

It is very light, and the screen resolution is good. I liked the speakers most. Sound is very good to me. The only concern that I have is the keyboard and screen seem not so durable. For example, while I am opening the screen, it feels like I would break it if I was little harsh. All in all, it is good. Recommend it.

You get what you pay for (4.5/5)

I've had this computer for over a month now and I really like it. It preforms as you would expect with the specs its got. It's got a nice display and a really nice beveled 14-inch. A couple of downsides as any computer would have. There are sometimes problems with the start up procedure. Every so often an error will occur that makes you restart it if you close it without putting it to sleep or shutting it down. Also if you put it to sleep over night the computer will have a lot of battery drained in the morning. The noise isn't as much of an issue as i thought it would be. You can only really hear it when you are running a lot of programs at once. Other than that its an excellent computer. I previously brought back 2 Acer Swift 3's and decided to go with this and it was a good decision.

Sexy quick and sleek

I've had my Zenbook for about a year and still love it. Performance wize it's fast and efficient. Plus it's lightweight and perfect for my mobile office - even fits nicely into my large purse. Couple of things worth noting: there's no VGA and only a micro HDMi for video output which meant buying new cables for my 2nd screen and TV connections. There are only 2 USB ports - so if you use an external hard-drive and wireless mouse there are no free ports for your thumb drive etc (manageable but inconvenient). And there's no DVD player - so you'll need an external one of those if it's important to you to be able to play DVDs. But it's a small price to pay for everything else you get with this PC.

Less than 24 hours old and...

I bought this laptop brand new and in less than 24 hours, with only less than 1 hour of run time, the speakers starting making a cracking sound best described as static. This happened at all volume levels. Returned it for a full refund the next day. Very disappointing...

Perfect size, fast, long battery life, amazing display, amazing keys! What else could I ask for?

  • from MONTRÉAL

Do not purchase!

This laptop was fine for about 2 weeks until the fan started to make a rattling sound. It is very loud and annoying, I tried returning it but Best Buy would not take it back, they sent it to ASUS to repair it. Once I received the laptop back I heard the fan the second I turned it on! I went back to Best Buy and they sent it back to ASUS. Once again I received the laptop and the problem has not been solved. I am extremely disappointed with this laptop and customer service from both companies. They have done nothing to fix this issue. Buy a better laptop, don't take a chance with this one because you will be stuck with it.

  • from Sault Sainte Marie, ON

Totally Satisfied

I've had this laptop for about a couple of weeks and love it. It's exactly as described. Very light, easy to carry, beautiful graphics, easy to use. I don't noticed any noise what so ever. So I don't know what those other reviews are talking about. Although I'm only using the laptop for email, browsing and netflix. Nothing too demanding. My only comment/complaint was a lack of a manual. Only a "User Guide" which was totally useless.

  • from Toronto, Ontario

I walked in best buy store in downsview toronto looking for a laptop with similar specs to this one but has a dedicated graphics card... I had sales guy (toshar) help me out and I was in a hurry to getting a laptop ... he told me this laptop has a dedicated graphics card but when i reached home and unboxed it..turns out it doesnt... I tried calling the store to speak to him but he avoided me.. I guess i'll go through the trouble of returning it and searching for another one... Talk about crappy customer service

Coil Whine

This laptop is really nice, has nice speakers and is pretty fast. I bought it for school and tested it for 2 days. How ever, i really hate the coil whine sound that it emits and the fan constantly goes on and off which is pretty annoying. My last laptop did not do that as much as this brand new one. Will be returning it.

  • from Edmonton, AB

Serious Software Issues

I bought this computer on sale in November after reading tons of reviews saying it was an excellent buy for students due to its specs and relatively low price. I returned it after 15 days because of software issues affecting the track pad. I got a new one after being convinced that this computer was a great student computer and very affordable. There were a few ticks with it, specifically with the keyboard back-light flashing and the Wi-Fi disconnecting every time I closed the laptop until I turned the Wi-Fi on and off again. Although annoying, I can live with that. But recently I have had nothing but issues when the computer goes to sleep. The screen often is unresponsive when I open up the laptop, and today I had to hard reset it because I was met with a blue, then black screen and a flashing keyboard when I opened it up in class (after using it fine only the night before). I really loved this laptop when it was working fine, and I understand that sometimes there are just factory defects that can affect some laptops, but I can't seem to fix any of these software issues, and after getting two defective computers I will be returning it and buying a different brand. Which, I might add, is extremely inconvenient given that I am in the middle of a university semester and rely heavily on a laptop.

Second Try is the Charm

It's a great laptop, battery life is excellent, it's fast, light, and looks cool. So far, I've used it to run Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator etc., and some light games on Steam, and it works really well. However, I'm currently writing this on my second one of these laptops as I have recently returned the first one, see below: Laptop 1 - Despite being charged, the laptop wouldn't turn on at times. I had to power cycle it to get it to boot up more than once. Also, in front of the trackpad, the edge of the laptop shell was opened slightly. It may have been dropped during shipping and this caused the case seam to split open a little bit. I returned it and got another one no questions asked. Laptop 2 - I left it charging for a few hours, came back to use it, and the laptop was incredibly hot. When I opened it, the backlit keyboard was flashing so I let it sit for a few minutes unplugged to cool down. I chatted with ASUS support and tried their suggested fix (Hard Reset and reinstall the battery driver) and it seems to be working fine now. I'm still nervous to leave it plugged in and charging unattended for any length of time though.

Best value ultrabook at the moment

With the newest 8th gen intelcore processor and a decent SSD, this lightweight laptop is lightning fast for what it is, and with a 50Wh battery, it will last at least a good 7h under a normal load. The screen and speakers are its best features and seem like they are taken straight out of a laptop three times its cost, while the brushed aluminium chassis gives it a solid premium feel. Definitely feels more expensive than it is. The lack of Thunderbolt and a GPU are its only downsides but for this cost, having these two would almost be asking for too much. As with other ultrabooks, it does heat up when under load and the fan becomes audible, but if this is your complaint, ultrabooks really aren't for you

  • from Waterloo, ON

Excellent laptop

Apart from the bilingual keyboard, this laptop is perfect in every way. Fan noise was an issue at first but the problem can easily be solved by installing a third party app called Notebook FanControl.

  • from Windsor, ON

I got this laptop a couple of months ago, and I love it! It perfectly fits my needs as a student and is lightweight and portable. It handles video streaming and multitasking like a charm. This is the first laptop of the 4 I've had in my life that I have truly loved. The only complaint I have is that the screen is a little dim and the difference between the dimmest-brightest settings is very small, and the volume doesn't go very loud. Other than that it's awesome!

Zenbook UX430 8th Gen

Spent a month researching laptops and kept coming back to the UX430! Sold my 2012 MacBook air for a decent price so was looking to replace the sold MacBook with either another MacBook air or Ultra book. I'm not looking for a heavy graphics intense machine that is a pain to hull around or surf on coach! I was torn between MacBook air 13 / Acer swift 3 / or this UX430! The hardware on the UX430 is excellent with 8th gen chip set coupled with full 1080 hd screen but most importantly the 256GB SSD ! On sale for 850 this laptop is a great deal compared with the MacBook air which doesent have a HD monitor and 5th gen chip and half the storage so that being said I gave this laptop a try and was not disappointed, Windows 10 is great user friendly interface! This laptop is the perfect size at 14 inches and lighter then a MacBook air. I love everything about this laptop and was fully prepared to return if not 100% satisfied and go back to a MacBook air however this is in every bit as good as MacBook in a windows package. Don't hesitate and buy this laptop if your looking for a ulta book and don't want to spend 1000's Read fan noise an issue but I haven't seen this at all in mine.

Bon produit

Recommend: Great Laptop

Pros: Fast processor, quad core processor, great amount of ram and storage, ssd is fast (13 seconds from powered off to logged in and ready to go), fingerprint scanner (easy log in), nice bezel, great screen, overall very nice laptop easpecially with the 8th gen processor making it much more worth is than other 7th gen competitors. Cons: Speakers on bottom can be muffled when used on lap (great on table or desk), Shift key is small (easy to get used to), when the cpu is being heavily used the fan can get loud and there's a small buzzing sound (you can't hear this if you're listening to music, watching a video, or have headphones on), no cons really cause much of an issue just small things that are easy to work around All around recommendable laptop \o>

Coil whine noise

Great specs and price but too much coil whine noise. Thought it may be a manufacturer defect for the one that I purchased so I exchanged it with another one but the new one is same too. I will be returning it.

Like a Macbook Air, only better

Great price for the laptop, even better if it's on sale. A couple hundred cheaper than the Macbook Air and also thinner, smaller (with a larger screen with higher resolution) and twice the storage.

better buy than macbook

i would compare this the macbook but much cheaper.
