For those reviewers who keep dissing Canon, take a course in computer basics. Even an idiot can setup this printer easily without whining and complaining. In my opinion, Canon is better than HP. HP sells crap. My very first Canon printer I owned was a Canon BJC-600 printer that I bought from Futureshop in the 1st Ave Marketplace back in the late 90s. The print quality of the BJC-600 was amazing. My only beef with the BJC-600 was that it takes a long time to initialize. That printer lasted me for at least 8 years. HP on the other hand breaks down in a year or two. I regret that Futureshop closed its doors when business was slow. I got another printer from Futureshop which was a Canon BJC-70 portable printer. Setup was a breeze. Unfortunately, my home was invaded and the thief got away with the printer. All in all, I'm satisfied with this printer.
This is a great printer. I followed the instructions in the manual and had no problems connecting via wifi. Printing quality is the best I have had in a personally owned inkjet or laser and is responsive to different printing functions (photo/document). The quality is always excellent. It isn't fast, but in my home office that is absolutely fine. The scanner captures a good high resolution image. The large ink vats are the main reason for purchasing this printer. But, I have also found out that the consumption of ink is very efficient, which means it is a well put together machine and should last a long time. You can connect it to so many wireless devices and you can automatically scan documents to your cloud storage.
G4200 Works well with Windows 10!
An improvement would be to have some LED backlighting for the feed and return trays and especially the display. I'm probably not the only one that likes working late in a dark office.
Lastly, If you need a printer I really recommend everybody to take a good look at this one.
I picked this printer up 2 months ago and am happy to say it has been a dream to use. I have two young children in school so between printing photos for projects, worksheets and photos they want for the locker we are using it a least a couple times per week. I used think twice before printing since ink cost so much but since it comes with so much I'm not putting limits on how we use it.
The set-up was simple. I had it up in running in about 10 minutes and connected it to my wifi. Now I can google anything my I want to print and send it to the printer directly - AMAZING!
It also has a scanner and copier onboard so I can digitize documents like receipts for work. Text documents are really sharp which is surprising because I thought I would need a laser for that quality. The photo quality is exceptional too.
All around I'm really happy with this all-in-one.
Bought it yesterday to install on my iMac. No software is provided for Mac and needs to download on line. Installation was frustrating and we couldn't fine the duplex printing feature. I returned it and bought an Epson eco tank 2750 instead. It was a breeze to set up and everything now works perfectly. Definitely do not recommend this product.
I have set up Canon printers in the past, as well as HP printers. Bought the G4200 because it was supposed to be a good photo printer and ink costs would be reasonable.
I have struggled with the printer for a week now. Installed, uninstalled, re-installed the printer/software and still don't have something that even comes close to working properly.
The scanner, using Canon supplied software, has never worked. As regards the various other suites of software supplied with the printer, these truly are pathetic and are a step backwards from what I had on my older printers!
Additionally, Installation instructions (whether supplied with the printer itself or accessed through the on-line Canon Manual or Canon internet site) is abysmal. There is nothing that clearly, step by step, sets out what needs to be done to install the printer and its various components - nor does the printer screen itself (very small and nearly impossible to read) allow you to wade through the quagmire of installation instructions to come up with something that allows you to get to the finish line and have a fully functional printer.
Had I realized how difficult and frustrating the set up would be - and how the functionality of the printer itself leaves so much to be desired - I would never have made the purchase.
For example, dialogue boxes open when initiating printing and do not close.
Furthermore it takes an inordinately long time before the printer engages and begins to print (so much so that you begin to wonder if there is an error and if it will ever commence printing) - and I have not yet even begun to do any photo printing (one of the primary reasons why I chose this printer) so have no idea what issues I will encounter with photos!
I am arranging to have a computer tech come over to see if he can start afresh and set the printer up so that it meets my minimum needs. A further expense that should not be necessary.
Overall, my latest Canon experience fails on all counts.
I bought this because I love the idea of ink tanks and not running out of ink all of the time, and not paying a lot for cartridges. I compared the epson workforce ET4550 and canon g4200 online and the reviews for photo quality tipped me over to the canon. I don't care about speed, just quality and ease of use. I haven't used the fax or scan so this review pertains to the printer and the overall setup.
Not pleased: LCD screen is on top of printer so I have to stand up every time I want to look at it, LCD screen is dim, so I actually needed a flashlight to read it at night in my office (i will move my desklamp beside it in the future), not getting airprint to work which I've never had in past with printers, manuals could be better written, clunky user interface....even though I tell the printer I am using 4x6 paper in the mac dialog box, it still requires me to enter the change on the machine, and every time I switch back from 4x6 photo paper to letter paper I have to do this again. Also, photo quality, despite glowing reviews is not as good as my old HP photosmart C410 from 6 years ago, a little more washed out colours and not as crisp. I think the quoted output with colour inks must be way off if you are printing on photo paper, and I'd like to see some stats from the manufacturer on this.
Bottom line: if you want to print photos, look elsewhere or get a photoprinter. If you want "easy", you'll have to work at it to get this printer where you want it. I want easy.
I purchased this printer a couple of months ago and I can tell you that this printer is a complete waste of time. Software that comes with the printer is buggy, especially when configuring it to work on my wireless network. Its taken a couple of months of reinstalling software and doing things manually before I was able to get the thing to print reliably over my wireless network (I'm not a network tech expert but I do understand how ip addressing works). Scanning still does not work reliably, which unfortunately is a feature that we use alot of right now... very frustrating. Duplex printing is SOFTWARE only, another feature we really like to have in a printer. So realistically, it doesn't do proper double sided printing. Print quality is ok, but should be better for the price you pay. Speed of printing is ok as well. Overall, this printer is way overpriced for the quality and functionality that you get with this boat anchor.
BTW, I've installed the cannon provided software on 4 different computers, one being a mac pro, and had similar problems on all 4 of them.
