Cheap and decent

I was looking for a computer for university and also for gaming and this one suits that perfectly. It's very fast to boot up and once you uninstall all the useless programs that come with it, it's very nice. I play sims 3 with all expansions and max settings and the game has never lagged and the graphics are very nice. I have noticed that the battery life is quite bad, the mouse pad is low quality ( use a mouse instead) and that the fan does come on often, but if you don't mind any of that, this is a really good computer. Also, there is only one USB port so keep that in mind if you're a student!

Impressed So Far

After my HP Pavillion AMD10 quad core powered laptop gave up the ghost (2nd HP I've owned and neither lasted all that long), went shopping and picked up this Dell Inspiron on sale. Despite others comments, I find this to be a really good laptop so far (just got it this week). It's super fast on boot (thanks SSD) and the screen is ok by me (you can adjust the brightness). Also love the finger scan to login and the unit seems to remain cool and not a lot of fan action to this point. Some have commented about the fan noise, and yes, it can get loud on occasion, but not annoyingly so, and no different from my previous laptop really (fan ran a lot on that one). Speakers are just ok, but I didn't buy it to get/play hi-fidelity audio. My main uses are internet and email, with the odd MS Office document creation, so definitely not taxing the CPU, which in turn probably keeps the fan from being on a lot. No gaming for this guy.... Time will tell if this was a good investment. I've had DELL work laptops and they have been ok, but not a home/personal one, so we'll see how it goes. One things for sure, don't think I'll turn back to HP after the experiences I've had back to back with their laptops.

Amazing Performance, Awful Everything Else

In terms of price/performance, this is probably the best deal at the moment. With the latest i5 processor, 8gb of DDR4 ram and a 256gb SSD and every I/O one could ask for (except thunderbolt), it's versatile and lightning fast for everyday use. Everything else is awful though. The keyboard is non-baclkit, the fan is very loud under load, the plastic shell gets scratched easily, the battery life is mediocre, the screen has terrible colors and viewing angles even by TN panel standards. If the screen doesn't irritate your eyes like it did for me and you want an affordable and usable laptop for years to come, it's actually a decent deal

worst computer I have ever bought!

I have regretted buying this computer since the day I bought it. It crashed during Dell regular updates and completely wiped out the operating system so it required a return to the manufacturer and loss of use for 2 weeks. I will never buy another Dell computer and will buy only Mac products going forward. I have a 6 year old Macbook Pro which is far superior to this poor excuse for a computer in every way. Do not buy this computer!

Fan is a deal breaker

It runs fine, but the fan ruins the experience. Sometimes it is quiet but sometimes it sounds like a helicopter going off. If you don't mind the sound then you should be fine, but if you do it will cheapen the laptop.

the fan works like a tractor

It was too noisy. The fan was working in full speed or stop. It was very noisy. Returned it already

Not a bad value compromise

Very snappy laptop with some nice features to equal pretty good value. Pro: - optical drive - VERY nice track pad - fingerprint scanner - solid state drive - 8th generation intel processor - 1080p screen Con: - fan turns on way too often - screen is only TN - keyboard does not light

Biggest hunk of junk I have ever wasted my money on! After 2 years (just after my extended warranty was up) The bottom of the laptop detached at the hinge. Super common problem with these models and it seems that there is no answer to this problem. Otherwise fabulous laptop but unfortunately after 2 years of minor use - I will have to replace and will be sure to never buy a Dell Laptop again. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MODEL!

Fast but bland design

This may not be a pretty laptop compared to its competitors but it has a lot of power underneath. 8th Gen Quad Core processor rocks!

Horrible Display

Works fast and is solidly built, so it's a shame that I will have to return it tomorrow. The display is horrible, with a white-ish harsh glow that hurts the eyes, and minimal color differentiation. Very disappointed since the resolution is supposed to be 1920x1080 (sure, that's just a guideline, but I was not expecting bad display of this level). Steer clear of this laptop unless you want headaches within the first 5 minutes of using it.
