Google could have nailed it with the Ultra, if they had only included a 3.5mm jack. This iteration of this product should have consolidated the Chromecast Audio feature with the original Chromecast. I want a portable casting device that can plug into a TV via HDMI, but I should also be able to plug this into an 3.5mm audio device such as a portable speaker when a HDTV or HD Receiver are not available. What's the point if I have to buy a separate Chromecast Audio anyway? Missed opportunity Google - I wouldn't consider this 'Ultra'. Long live the 3.5mm standard!
This gadget is basically "plug'n play". The pairing process with my Google Home Mini via my Android tablet was very easy. The picture quality is perfect (for my standards - it runs on my older 42" 1080p TV) and response time is very quick....Love it.
Since I got this (August 2017), never had problem with it. I have cable but don't use it anymore. The kids love it and keep watching their favorite movies through this Chromecast Ultra. The pictures ares great as cable pictures
This is an awesome product and works well with most if not all chromecast apps. Purchased it to replace my Chromecast because I wanted to use an ethernet connection instead of wifi the it's faster than the chromecast 2015 the 4k resolution and hdr are nice extras.
I already had the previous Google Chromecast and needed the 4K. Although I'm on a highspeed wireless network, the video mirrored from my Samsung S7 was far from 4K quality even though it was recorded in that quality.
I still like this product very much for its versatility, but question the quality for the extra price.
I had to return the Chromecast Ultra after a couple days of usage because I need to mirror the desktop onto a large 42" TV. There is so much lag that it is barely usable.
EASY to install on my Onkio receiver.
Seems impossible that a small device can keep a so high technology.
I hope it can last and be reliable.
Plugged it into my stereo receiver, and it connected right away.. Super fast response..
I know it is more expensive, But since you mention you were using a Macbook, you should have just went with an Apple TV. We use them at my work to display HD content from our iMacs to tour TV's. works like a charm.
I bought the first Chromecast when it came out and I loved it, I still use it today. I just got this one, and I love it, too! Load times are so quick!! Unfortunately my display is only 1080p, so I have not tested it's 4k capabilities, but so far so good.
If only 4K and HD TV's web browser are capable of playing flash videos we would not need to bu Chromecast or Apple Tv and the like. Chromecast should be able to include the ability to fast forward or rewind videos. Instead an ad for an additional app for purchase keeps on appearing on the gadget's screen.
This is a great product, simple to use, and very effective way to stream stuff from or via your phone to a TV.
One caveat which appears to hit a number of people (see Google for reports of this issue): in principle, there is no reason this product should not work via a surround-sound amp with HDMI ports. I couldn't make it work. so instead I had to plug it directly into my TV, which means it doesn't play back through my surround sound system.
The chrome cast ultra is everything that I thought I wanted for my 4k TV, until I realized I could not even utilize it. It essentially functions like the original chromecast because it's difficult to find applications and other programs that have 4k content. There are some videos on YouTube and the like, but even Netflix on mobile has not caught up to offer 4k content yet. It does however, have it on the PS4 pro, so essentially the chromecast ultra is pointless. It's a more expensive chromecast with potential to be better, but held back due to compatibility with other systems.
Wired network means no wireless lag. Ever!
Quick and easy to install, quick and easy to use.
I bought the Ultra because I thought it would cast a better picture than the regular Chromecast when streaming from laptop. However you have to be streaming a higher definition version of the movie also. If you are paying a membership to get the higher definition movie the regular Chromecast will cast a better picture too and probably as good as you need.
The Ultra requires a wall plugin where my regular Chromecast had a usb plug for the back of the tv which is far more convenient.
Great product easy setup. Best to go wired instead of wireless.
This chromecast is a very good picture of 4k but u need to have ur router close to it as u can to have the 4k quality.
I bought a cheapo 4K chinese brand tv and it did not have any built-in apps. Then, this thing arrived at my house and it changed the way I used my tv.
It does 4K without struggling, image is crisp and fast.
I can control Spotify on my Cellphone and beam it to the TV which send it back with optical to my amplifier.
If you want to make your setup a truly intelligent one this is what you need.
This is my second chromecast, first one is still working, i bought a 4k tv and tbougth i should have a new chromecast, i primarily use it for viewi g you tube videos and they work fine, the new one supports 4k .so good for the new tv. Ultra is faster than older version during start up. Overall good simple value for money product
Very fast compare to the previous 2 models... I have 2, one in the loft and the other in the basement. I had WiFi issues with the previous model but no issues whatsoever with the ultra.
you guys don't give any specs at all. i mean no remote how do we control it? lol. no usb for keyboard and mouse? no usb for flash drive no card reader for sd card? is it duo, quad or octa core? how much ram? like come on how can we buy a product you give 0 info on? because bestbuy hires 0 educated people to work for them. they have no clue what technology even is let alone the specs of things lol
I pre-ordered the Chromecast Ultra with the sole intention of wirelessly casting Ultra HD content from my MacBook to my 4k TV. I was really looking forward to not having to plug in my MacBook to the TV to watch movies, which meant I could finally get rid of the unsightly HDMI cord dangling behind my TV. An added bonus was that I could cast the screen of my phone onto the TV, which is cool, but I don't really need a 50" Instagram screen. So the Ultra came in the mail yesterday and I was super stoked to set it up and cast some movies to the TV. I started casting a movie using VLC player and I couldn't figure out for the life of me why the audio was still playing from my MacBook. After a couple Google searches and a call to Chromecast support, it became very clear that my dangling HDMI cable won't be leaving anytime soon. I tried using a third party application (Airfoil, for those interested) on my MacBook to cast the movie's audio to the TV, which worked great, except for the fact that you can't cast two sources to the Chromecast at once. This meant that I could play either the audio OR the video from the TV, but not both. Chromecast support did tell me that I could cast both audio and video (simultaneously) from the Google Chrome browser, but not from anything outside of Chrome. This means that you can still cast Youtube, Netflix etc., but is redundant for those with a Smart TV because you can do that from the TV without the computer anyway.
Long story short, if you're looking at a Chromecast Ultra to watch movies from your Macbook that aren't streamed in Chrome, you're out of luck.
love the new resolution and speed. wish it would provide more control over TV and drew power from TV itself via HDMI. its time to grow up chromecast.
