Insignia USB 3.0 Advanced Memory Card Reader - Only at Best Buy

This device worked but now, less than a year later, it won't recognize a standard SD card size, or the Micro SD card size. The light comes on but nobody is home :/ 20 bucks for this... gonna go spend $10 on Amazon for a smaller sleeker one and see if it lasts longer...

I purchased this to replace an aging card reader in the hopes that it would be faster at transferring images from SD cards to my Windows computer. Right out of the box, this device did not perform well. It was recognized and I was able to see content on multiple cards I tried, but in attempting to transfer the images my computer froze and task manager did not respond. My screen went black and my computer remained unresponsive until I pulled the power cable out. I tried four different times with four different cards and got the same result. I tried connecting my 12-year-old reader with the same cards and it worked fine. I will be returning this.

In today's world of tablets/laptops with minimal ports, this is a handy device. I connect it into my disk farm and can use it to copy SD and microSD disks quickly. It has a slot for each and each slot is assigned its own drive letter. It will also accept CF disks, but I don't have any. I can use the device to copy to/from internal drives on my computers or external drives in my disk farm. It is a USB3 device and I have achieved real-world transfer rates of 50/60 MB/s copying from an internal drive thru this device. YMMV. One use is to transfer data from archival storage onto an internal disk for mobile access. Small enough to throw in a togo bag if needed.

This little guy worked exactly one time; I'm not exaggerating. I used it to pull pictures off of my dslr camera card the first day and everything worked fine. I went to pull pics off another card three days later and I kept getting read errors. I actually thought it might have been the second card, so I ttied it in my second laptop (it has a built-in reader) and the card worked perfectly. On a side note, I didn't like the feel of the reader ports. My laptop reader has a spring-loaded port that feels like a very solid lock when the card goes in and out. This reader just uses a friction fit, so there's no real feedback to tell you if you've inserted the card properly.

This product appeared to work correctly when first connected to my laptop; I plugged it in via USB, it immediately connected and installed drivers, and even displayed a new drive when I inserted my memory card. However, once I tried to access the files on the drive, I received an I/O error and could not access the files. I tried again, removing and reinserting the card and had the same issue. I tried the memory card in a completely different reader and it works fine. So, I took the memory card reader and connected it to a different computer. Same results. Not recommending this unit.
