Worst remote I've owned. Very poor design with touchscreen positioned between buttons, very easy to accidentally engage touchscreen even without physically touching it. Remote often gives erroneous output, pressing pause will change the channel or some other function. Touchscreen function at times is very sensitive and other times requires a very hard tap to engage. My previous harmony 650 remotes had buttons fail to function after as little as one year, thought this remote would be an improvement but sadly causes more frustration than appreciation. This will be my last harmony remote.
Although I didn't really use the touch screen features much and relied mostly on the buttons like play, stop, fast forward or just off to turn off the current activity. The problem is the touch screen even when not in use has a 2 or 3 day standby and the power runs out. You either keep the remote in the charging stand or remember to put it in the charging stand every 2 or 3 days. My remote was completely dead even when charged over nite after a month and a half of usage. Be weary of the touch screen remote as it is high maintenance for a remote. I managed to buy the Harmony Smart control with hub and the remote runs on a coin battery that last for one year. You do not need a remote with touch screen.
With both the latest Sony receiver STRDN1080 and Sony XBR65X900E TV, CEC and ARC has been serving me well for the last year or so with a single button click on the PS4 play button turns on both the TV and the receiver. This is the same with the Nintendo Switch by pressing the home button on the controller even Netflix on my smart TV by pressing Netflix. So why do we need Harmony today? I had used Harmony many years ago when none of my devices had CEC or ARC so when the Harmony ultimate went on sale, I decided to pick one up to see if it could be useful. It turned out that unifying my whole entertainment system under Wifi is probably the best thing since CEC and ARC. Now I can turn on my amplifier on my iPhone for Air play without searching for the remote. This is what all remotes for your entertainment system should be like; wifi controlled. However since it is not, Harmony is the next best thing to happen. My only qualms about Harmony is that it doesn't support Apple's Homekit. Although there is a hack that can make Harmony work with Apple's Homekit, I would have preferred it as something offered by Harmony. Harmony is still a great product and it is good to see that even in this day and age that a universal all in one remote is still needed; especially one that runs on the iPhone.
First off I have been a Harmony customer for years, having owned an 800 and then two One's. I am sold on the premium remote without question. When I switched from my 800 to the One, I found an upgrade in the remote that made spending the money a second time easy. However in this case, I must say I find the Ultimate a step below from the One. Holding the Ultimate in your hands feels nice, however splitting the buttons between the top and bottom is were the issue comes in. With these remotes the screen is imperative to what makes it great, however the majority of actions you do, are still done with the button. I find with this remote I am constantly having to remember what is on top and bottom and having to look at the remote, as oppose to just feeling for the keys. In addition I find the screen much more sensitive then the screen on the One. When I set up the remote I notice the screen had a lock on it, which i thought was weird and quickly disabled it. Well it was not long before I re-enabled. The sensitivity made it very easy to accidentally hit the screen when handling the remote and launching actions. Clearly Logitech recognized this as an issue and instead of fixing the problem, they implemented the lock. So the lock fixes the issue, but one over sight on it is they do not put battery level on lock screen. Because I use Alexa to turn TV on and off and change channels, I rarely need the screen. The remote often dies without me knowing it is low and I have to use the phone app. If I could I would go back to my Harmony One, but it broke.
Now the hub is a different story, I love this functionality. From the ability to use the app on my phone when the remote is charging, can’t be found or is on the other side of the room (hey I am lazy what can I say). Also the ability to use my echo speaker is a huge plus. Using Alexa I can turn different activities on, change channels on my Shaw box and change the volume. Note Alexa does not do it all and you still need the remote. But hey maybe that will come in the future.
So in closing I would give the hub 5 stars and the remote more like 3, so I settled on 4 for the review. If you are Harmony One user, you might be let down a little by the remote changes. If you are new to Harmony, I think you will love the whole experience. So while not my favourite Harmony over the years I do recommend the purchase, or if using Alexa, maybe get the next model down.
We had been looking for a way to move our stereo & cable box (Rogers) to the attached room so that we could hide the wires. We were able to move everything and now have one little wire that needs to "see" the tv. Everything set up very easily. The only reason this gets 4 stars is that the app is very tempermental. I've uninstalled it a few times, and the device tends to lose connection, even when changing channels. Not sure why this is. I'm right next to the router, and its a new phone.
All in all, very please with this purchase.
This is my second Harmony remote. It is quite expensive remote and lots of people won't buy it because of its price. When I first bought this remote, it came with USB cable to sync it with Harmony app on my laptop but it got changed later on. Now all the updates are over the air. I have Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect. I also have Hue bulbs. All these devices sync with Harmony Ultimate Remote. It is so cool that I have programmed Harmony remote to control Hue lights with my TV activities. At night when we watch TV, main lights in the room gets dimmed and when we finish TV watching, full lights come on etc etc.
Highly recommended remote because it works almost all devices.
It's a great remote. Way overkill for what I need since a don't have much in the way of home automation devices but I love that I can use my phone to control my devices too.
This is the 4th in a series of Harmony remotes that I have had over the years and this one just plain works with my equipment with no fuss. Everything switches over where it's supposed to, no hassles. Previous remotes were a fuss to keep them aimed at the devices until everything switched. With the hub and IR extenders, this is no longer a problem.
Purchased this at a great Black Friday price. Easy to set up. Found the newer networked devices and was easy to slave to older devices. Six remotes are now one. Works like a dream on iPad/iPhone.
Great remote with an easy setup. Put in the make and model number and off you go. You can adapt it to suit your preferences with easy tweaks. The fact you can use your phone or tablet is a bonus especially if you have 2nd or 3rd zone. Volume and selection can be adjusted via wifi with no need to go back to the room with the receiver. A little time spent learning the process helps.
This product is quite possibly the worst purchase I've ever made. It is frustrating and frequently causes issues for no know reason.
Actions as simple as changing channels have become a tedious nightmare when using this remote. Be prepared to have to try changing channels an average of three times before you get where you want to go.
Does everything it is suppose to do. Love the remote and the app on the phone.
My first Harmony report lasted about 4 years and then started to not work 100% of the time. I hunted around for another multi-unit remote and only found harmony.
I was able to transfer the setup of my devices and activities from my old Harmony setup program to my new one - super easy!
the new IR blaster is strong enough that I no longer need to use the mini blasters, I just have the main hub on a coffee table in the room.
No so sure about the remote's buttons and touch screen. It tries to act like a smartphone screen by allowing you to swipe up-down/left-right but really buttons worked fine before.
Having more control over the activities list is nice and the favourite channel listing is handy.
I have had a Harmony Ultimate for about 6 months and just bought another for a different location. They work quite well and allow you to operate equipment behind closed doors. The remote communicates with the hub by RF and then the hub blasts out the IR signal required by the equipment. In practice it works quite well although I always have had problems with my projector which usually takes 2 attempts to turn off. Set up is quite easy through the Harmony web site but I would say the ability to navigate and customise on the web site is below what most people would expect. It ultimately works but could be easier and more flexible. The battery in the remote only lasts a couple of days before you need to recharge. You can also use an apple or android phone or tablet to operate which works well
The hardware is great. Nice remote with a fairly large and bright touchscreen. Nicely placed and simple button layout. The software is garbage (see below).
- The IR blaster works very well and has 2 IR emitters if the hub isn't in line of site.
- Controls lots of stuff around your home - I have it controlling 5 devices including my Nest thermostat and Roku 3 via IP controlling.
- Once it's up and running, it's quick and reliable.
- The software has somehow gotten worse since the previous Harmony Central software I had with my old remote. It's bloated and slow and barely works. Luckily you only have to really use it when setting up the remote. But setup took way longer than it should have - at one point it wouldn't even detect my remote. Had to find an undocumented key combination to get the remote to reset to factory settings and start over. Finally got it all working, though.
- The battery in the remote could be bigger. I've had to charge it about once a week. Comes with a little charging station and detachable USB cable so it's not a huge deal.
- I got this on sale but the retail price is too high, in my opinion.
Even with the software, this remote gets 4 stars. Works very well once configured.
The setup was a bit of a challenge but once everything was setup, it worked really well. The remote controls 5 of my devices with no issues. I really like the Harmony Ultimate Home controller.
This device was easy to set up, it actually recognized most of my devices, without needing additional work to set them up.
The remote activates all devices the way you need them to be for a particular function with one swipe of the remote. With other words it turns on my stereo and sets it to cable, it turns on the PVR and the TV, all in the sequence needed for things to work properly.
So far I have not experienced any problems, and would highly recommend to anybody who is tired of using multiple remotes, or attempt to program a universal remote which never does it all.
Setup was easy if you use a smartphone or tablet. Would be more useful for anyone into home automation (i.e. Nest etc). Battery charge lasts for a day or two at the most so unit needs to be parked in charging stand each night. The system lost its sync several times and I needed to use the HELP menu to turn on devices that were missed during a request for an activity.
Bottom line is this is an expensive setup if used for TV/Cable/PVR only.
Returned the unit and am using the Harmony 650 (replacable batteries last months and the remote is a hand on the coffee table).
Have it setup in my home theatre. I use my iPad or iPod to control the system more than the remote it's self though. Works great would buy again and recommend.
Bought this to replace older harmony.
Setup was supposed to be easy. However my equipment dates back to 2009, so not sure if that's the reason why I have some issues. It asks for the company and model number for each device. My TV is wall mounted and all the info if on the rear panel. No info in the TV menu... Thank goodness for Google. Also had difficulty setting my Harman Kardon receiver. The input would not change appropriately after the system had been powered down. The option for increasing the response time of the device while powering up had no impact. I finally managed to get it to work by setting up the HK receiver independently (temporarily). For whatever reason, that resolved the input selection issue and then I deleted the standalone HK setup and kept my Watch TV activity setup. Since I figured that out the system works flawlessly. Very satisfied. But my setup was painful.
As for design, the remote is awkward to hold near the top where the play, rewind, fast forward buttons are. It fat at the bottom and skinny at the top. All the weight is low down where the battery is located. So not so pleased about that. But once I push play I usually set it down. Even though, I would have expected more for the price they sell it at. It should be nothing short of perfection, and there are some flaws. I bought it on sale so not too disappointed.
Hub is great if you have a smart phone.
Bottom line is that it works the way Logitech intended, but it's overpriced.
Honestly if you take the time setting this up with nest, philips hue, Up band and ifttt you will find your self with a cheap home automated system that will make your lifestyle cozy and relax. And best costumer service when it comes to logitech. They didn't hesitate sending me a new remote without even asking for the old one back.
Not as good as expected The RF 890 was working a lot better not werth the mony.
I have had the simplest Harmony Home Control and I just bought this. It's amazing! The touchscreen is very good. Easy to setup and to update.
I can control my TVs, home theater and Philips Hue system
Bought this to reduce remote clutter. I have a Samsung smart tv and Pioneer receiver. Discovered these two units talk to each other anyway and provide all functions the harmony does. Also harmony touch screen not as responsive as the original Samsung remote. In the end I returned the harmony as it just seemed to add to the clutter.
I have had harmony remotes for a while now. This one is super easy to program and set up. Just take a few minutes and write down the information of your components. I used my android smart phone to program this. It took all of 15 min to have this up and running.
Yes it is a little expensive but the ease of use and what you can accomplish with this remote is great.
The trade in for old harmonys was well worth the incentive to upgrade.
