  • Love this receiver!

I have a 9.1 system. Definitive technology front speakers. My original receiver had trouble getting enough power to the center speaker which resulted in trouble hearing voices in movies and sporting events. Not a problem with this receiver. It has plenty of power. There was a bit of a learning curve getting the system set up, but overall, it has exceeded my expectations!

I can't be a good judge of audio quality cuz I wear hearing aids so nothing sounds natural and great anymore, but at least I can hear speech better. I really miss hearing great sounding music naturally, but it is what it is. Sometimes my 5.1 sounds great though and the Marantz video processing made a noticeable improvement on my aging Samsung Plasma, last one they made. Not super dramatic, but the colors were more saturated so everything looked a bit better. Like my Yamaha 3000 receiver, the plasma went out recently and I replaced it with a Sony OLED, so the video is great now, obviously. As with video, audio output varies quite a bit with the source, so I'm glad this receiver gives me lots of room to alter the sound to something I can enjoy. I just wish the remote/software would respond more quickly cuz I need to tweak the output so often due to my hearing issues. If I didn't need to do that, it would be ok, but since I need to reach the submenus again and again, make an adjustment, back out and check it, then maybe do it again, it quickly get's tiresome if the system won't keep up with me. My 67 yr old brain is getting more familiar with the menus and where to go to make what adjustments, but getting there takes a little too for me. The Sony tv remote and menu layout is better and faster. Otherwise, the Marantz seems to be a good sounding and powerful unit and pairs nicely with my Martin Logan SL3s. Vocals sound smooth and full, I'm able to tweak the full freq. spectrum, and there is more than enough clear and solid thump and rumble. Haven't listened to a lot of music yet, but so far, so good. The only poor design feature is the small porthole display. It is unique and distinctive, but sometimes there is a good reason to look mainstream. The text is clear but if your not within 6 ft, it's kinda useless. You almost have to have a display to use the music functions, but the Sony makes it easy to turn off the display and leave the music on, even though I linked the Sony remote to turn both units on/off with one touch. Maybe Marantz figured on that and kept the porthole. I don't have overhead speakers but I can say that the Atmos Virtual sound is noticeable. It makes the front soundstage wider and taller than normal 5.1, and provides overhead sound effects that 5.1 cannot. What I also noticed though was that voices diminished quite a bit with Speaker Virtual on. Perhaps I need to boost the Center Channel when I turn SV on. Yet another tweak, sigh. Overall I like the performance very much. If it weren't for my hearing problems, I wouldn't need to tweak so often and the porthole might be my only dislike.

Great sound system for movie watch or Kareoke for the whole family. The sound effects are just like the one we hear in the movie theaters!
