It's heavy, it's not so comfortable to carry around. The handle is a little sharp on the edges. The rave light takes up so much space so it's longer then it's cousin with out the light show. However, this is the most sonic rich portable speakers I've heard in years. Reminds me of some of the quality ghetto blasters of the 80s. It's extremely robust, and water resistant all though I'd never leave it in moisture no matter what they say. Overall, if you want one of the loudest, best sounding speakers on the market, i'd consider bucking up for this one. The battery lasts fairly long, but when you're blasting it loud I find it drains faster obviously. Keep the charger handy if you're going to blast it for a long time.
I really want to like this unit, BUT I don't like being mislead.
Two things to point out:: Best Buy states this has a 5 year warranty....it does NOT, it has a one year warranty. I knew this "fact" was wrong before I bought it. I called BB and pointed this out...I hope they correct this.
More irritating is Monster's claim of it being waterproof / splash proof and working in a torrential rainstorm. It is NOT and will NOT! The first precaution in the instruction manual is to keep this unit away from any source of moisture. I just got off the phone with a rep from Monster who confirmed it is not to be near water and if it does get exposed to water, the warranty is not going to cover the damage. Is Monster trying to mislead people intentionally or are they simply too lazy to proof read their own product literature? To be fair, BB can't be faulted here, as they are simply reprinting the manufacturer's info.
The battery lasted a little over 3 hours at a higher volume (typical use during a party I would think) with the lights on only a small part of that time. This is certainly not long enough for a person to use it outdoors during a party (in dry weather of course...LOL) unless they're near an AC outlet. A group of seniors using the unit at low volume while playing canasta with their hearing aids cranked may get close to the claimed battery life, but the average party user risks being sorely disappointed. BTW, it took 5 hours to charge.
The Bluetooth connection is almost instant after the first connection (I'm a Samsung Galaxy 5 Neo user). The unobstructed range for me is about 25 at best.
Unlike a laptop which allows the end user to replace a tired battery, this unit has a non serviceable battery. Therefore, I would expect the "portability" of this device to be a few years as a factory service on the battery probably wouldn't be cost effective.
Although the much lauded low frequency performance is somewhat muddy and a real drain on the battery to be sure, the sound is still quite good if positioned properly...keeping in mind it's a boombox, not a home stereo. It gives a decent volume, the lights are cool, and the general construction is very nice. What I believe to be an inflated claim for the battery life (typical of companies) and the misrepresentation by Monster regarding the effects of water on the unit are difficult to overlook though. I got no apology from the company rep even after telling him the "waterproof" claim on their website was a major selling feature for me. Not that I intend to use it during a rainstorm....but the belief it could withstand an accidental spill of a drink during a party was a bonus...so I thought. If I choose to keep it, I may need to set up a police tape barrier around the Ravebox to protect my investment during parties....ahhhhh nuts.
I'm still debating whether or not to return it as I certainly have sufficient cause. Were it not for the misleading representation of this unit, I may have given it four stars. Good luck.
