Constant disconnection

For a security camera there should be no disconnect unless your doing a scheduled maintenance. Like everyone who wrote a review about the same issue with the camera disconnecting randomly, sometime multiple times a day is true. I'm on telus optik 150/150Mbps and the actual throughput is 168/168 upon receiving the down alert notification. DO NOT BUY THIS NEST SECURITY CAMERA

  • from Thompson, MB

works most of the time

seems to be a bit slow and not clear at times. too dependent of internet conditions

  • from Toronto, ON

not worth the money

Bought it over a year ago and because the outdoor camera is limited to 2.4ghz, the connection constantly drops. I've bought a new more powerful router, upgraded the antenna's to high powered directional, try repositioning the antenna's, tried different camera quality settings and tried different router settings. Fact of the matter, if you live somewhere where everyone has a 2.4ghz wifi, look for a different camera. The disconnections are daily at this point and have been getting worst over time.

Beyond expectations for picture quality

Checked the price of having security cameras installed by our security company and it was just too expensive with the streaming video feature, plus we would need to upgrade our monitoring service at additional cost. Instead, I researched cameras and decided to try 2 Nest cameras at Best Buy and the picture quality is far beyond expectation. The connection with wifi was quick to set up and the connection hasn't dropped which is great since we are away from our home and can check our house every day. We weren't happy with having the long cord plugged into the exterior outlet so we had it installed under the eave and ran the cord to the inside. The Nest cameras are small and not that noticeable We signed up for the 5 day streaming video from Nest Aware and feel it is reliable and worth the money.

3 hour free history snapshot is bad

At the first month you can view up to 10 days history event videos, but after that you will only able to view 3 hours history snapshot, NOT event videos, this is VERY bad, it's useless without viewing the event videos. Will be good if it's 3 hours free history event videos. NOT Recommended if you want to view history event videos...

Nest Outdoor Camera

Very pleased with product build quality, installation bits and pieces, instructions, set-up and performance. Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Also, the AC power makes a better picture quality and improved reliability.

Not suitable for Ottawa winters

After 3 months of use, and as winter came, it became apparent that this camera could not withstand the cold. It would work perfectly during the say but would fail at night. NEST tech support even wrote me an email to this effect so that I could return it. Great service but not appropriate for severe cold weather.

Good Product

works amazing if you have a pretty good router with a good internet connection. ive been reading the comments that it dosent connect at all. you must have a terrible internet upload speed. nest it self says in its specs you need a minimum of 2 MBPS UPLOAD. and if your internet is crappy the service is crap. i got bell fibe 150mbps download and 50mbps upload. works like a charm. most "economical" internet packages serve terrible upload speeds

Poor wifi and mobile app struggles with image quality

disappointed with this purchase. I've tried using it for a month and have received a warranty replacement but device does not work as advertised.

Connection is very unstable. Huge lags and delays, IF it even connects. Router is ten feet away, so that's not the issue. Bad product.

No warranty if NEST breaks with software update

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA. All or nothing notifications. Zones do not work with PERSON SEEN option. Nest broke this with their last update and have not been able to fix it. I heard a Class action lawsuit is brewing because it basically rendered everybody cameras useless. Its been broken for 6 months so far and Support says they are sorry but still have not solution, tech even admitted they are paperweights now. BestBuy should really consider removing this from their site until its fixed. (if they can fix) doesn't look promising anymore.

Pretty Good

Relatively easy to install. Weird set up for making the external power supply secured. Great picture quality and the love the night vision. Pro-tip - check your notifications and the location(s) of the camera(s). So many push notification and emails due to the wind blowing the trees and plants around one of my cameras.

  • from Kitchener

Bought this when it first came out. Nest added a feature that basically made it useless and broken. Person seen option needs to be turned off if you are pointing at your front porch because it will notify you every time a person is walking down sidewalk... Unfortunately if you turn off Person seen it will not notify you if your burgler is human. If the burgler is a a squirrel you will get notified. Nest support says this is the way it will stay, and too bad for your luck that an update broke it and you are outside your 30 day return period. NEST SUCKS wish Google never bought that silly company.

Good quality, poor service

Camera is good, however they practically force you into the nest aware subscription in order to use basic features like recording and saving videos. There are other options in the market the offer all capabilities for free.

worst piece of technology i own

i bough this camera to add security to my home. it is installed within 10 feet of my telus supplied router. it routinely goes offline for no apparent reason. it can be offline for a few minutes or even a few hours. the frequesny that it does this is increasing over time and after only a few weeks i am ready to scrap it. would never buy again. on a side note; i have a nest thermostat and i love it. that's why i bought this camera

  • from Calgary, AB

Fundamentally Flawed

This is the only Nest product I have not purchased. Usually I leave reviews for things I've tried and tested, but I wanted to share my rationale for NOT buying it to help those thinking about it. This is not a security camera. Firstly, that exposed wire protruding from the bottom of the unit. An experienced intruder will see that and cut it, rendering the camera useless. Secondly, it is mounted on a magnetic bracket, so the camera can be easily pulled off its mount or moved. Undoubtedly it looks nice, the user experience, picture quality and mobile app will be great like all Nest products. But security cameras need to be as tamperproof as possible, the Nest fails with style on that one.

The Gold Standard

I have two of these installed: one in the garage and the other overseeing the backyard. These cameras are first class in almost every way. I have four in total and have never, ever had an issue with them. The broadcast the highest quality picture and offer an optional video service (which you can decline of course!) I have suffered the hell of D-Link and other inferior technologies, and it is a dream to have something you install once and it works without complaint, fussiness or etc. It IS on the pricey side, but what is the point of buying crap cameras over and over again? WIFI - works perfectly QUALITY: ultra high FUNCTIONALITY: superb.

  • from Vancouver

Don't waste your money on it. It constantly Cuts in and out. My wireless expensive router is 10 feet away. It's pretty much a kid's toy.

  • from Calgary, AB

Not an addon camera

Only works with Nest and they will work you hard to up-sell. Better to choose an add on camera and use any of the monitoring software packages available

  • from Edmonton

Simple, does what what's advertised

I've had the nest outdoor cam since it's release. This is the second nest product I own, along with the thermostat. The products are well thought out and easy to install and setup. The nest andriod app works well, it's easy to scan through a days events. There is a brand new andriod TV app that seems to work well. I do get the occasional brief period, but that seems to be attributed to my internet provider. I have had no issue with 5g coverage. Overall, I am happy with the device and I intent to purchase another for my backyard. Pros: Easy to setup Easy to install Solid mobile app support Ifttt integration Excellent viewing angle Excellent lowlight support Very good video quality. Cons: No battery or POE option No ability to locally store video Nest protect is extra 100 a year. Competition is quickly catching up with lower priced and more feature packed alternatives

  • from Burnaby, BC

Good but could be better

Quality is good, notifications are good and was easy to install. monitoring service is expensive monthly and sometimes the video lags when trying to review.

  • from Kamloops, BC

Excellent product

This camera is amazing at detecting and alerting when a person is close to the camera. I am notified of someone coming to my door before they even knock. This is a subscription based product, and you should be aware of this prior to purchase. My only issue is the lack of the 5 GHz WiFi band, but that's due to Canadian laws restricting outdoor WiFi appliances to the 2.4 GHz frequency.

  • from Hudson

Great Camera but need fast Wi-Fi

Excellent service, received mine in 2 days, had it installed by a pro. The camera, image quality is exceptional, but the monthly monitor service is on the pricey side, otherwise this would be a 5 star rating. You will also need a very fast Wi-Fi in order to take advantage of this feature1080p but the 720p still has a very good image quality . Design and look are just beautiful. Overall, I would recommend this camera to anyone thinking of buying a security camera.

  • from .

I just spoke with Nest Support and they confirmed the models sold in Canada and Europe DO NOT support 802.11a 5GHz wireless connectivity !! The Canadian/European models have a different chip inside which limits them to 2.4Ghz - no idea why they would make such a decision. As per the Specs sheet: US: Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Europe and Canada: Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, 2.4GHz My indoor Nest Cam model supports both 2.4 and 5GHz without any trouble - why would they limit the Outdoor model ??? They need to add a note on the packaging to warn users - going to return this product to the store and purchase from the US.

  • from Edmonton, AB

VERY expensive

I used 3 of these NEST cam's for over a year and, although they work great, the cost mount up big time with the monthly subscription REQUIRED to use it. Also, had nothing but trouble with their Nest App. Continuously crashed. Quality is fantastic, costs are outrageous.

  • from Timmins, ON

Simple setup

Including reading the setup guide and installing it outside it took an hour. Couldn't have been easier. Having wifi and ip capabilities makes it an easy decision to purchase. Subscription to the Nest Aware service is definitely worthwhile. The price is very reasonable and the added features are worth it. Once you setup zones and play with the notification settings it is very intuitive. The camera audio and video is very good. Crystal clear during the day and still quite good at night. Speaking to somebody outside the door from wherever you are works perfectly.

Inconvenient Truth

I love the original DropCam. I wished they had made it in white. So when I saw this rendition, I was overjoyed. In fact, I bought two. Originally I planned to place these indoors. When they arrived, I decided to place them outdoors. This is where problems arose. The power supply involves a good bit of hardware. Placing the power supply outdoors is a bit of an eyesore. Running it from indoors requires a rather large hole to be drilled into your wall. Also, no matter which way you source power (inside or out), I find the whole installation process of this camera is awkward and not well designed. Thus, back into the box they went. I'll hang onto these, in the hopes that I can use them indoors.

Nest Cam outdoor camera

Great product. Great picture quality and easy to install.

  • from Kamloops

Nest Cam Outdoor

Bought the first one and installed it in the driveway. Works great. Bought a second one for the rear entrance of our house. Great picture quality and the intercom is awesome. Easy to hook up, you may have to purchase a WiFi extender for some locations.

  • from Winnipeg, MB

Monitoring = YES, Security = NO

If you want an outdoor cam for monitoring things while away, then sure, I can see using this. Nest products have a fairly good reputation. But as a security cam, there are so many flaws I don't have the time or strength to list them. Anyone wanting to infiltrate your home is going to case your home first and it would be so easy to take out this device it isn't funny.

  • from Toronto, ON

good idea - expensive service

got mine on day one. installed. pros: easy to use interface. good notifications. good quality cons: expensive monitoring service. poor wifi performance \ in Canada you ONLY get 2.4 Ghz wifi service, which is really bad idea for 1080P video

  • from Toronto, ON

The best

super easy to install. Clear 1080p video with 2 way voice communication. Wish it comes with free cloud storage. They give you a month trial cloud storage only.
