I have owned this for two years. Have to reboot it often, and the firmware updates are almost impossible to get. I did a firmware update yesterday and now it's a door stop.

  • Acceptable speeds. Weak signal

When I upgraded by ADSL (5Mpbs) to VDSL (50MPBS aka Fibe), I thought it would be good to have a router that would help me maximize my use of the bandwidth. I have 3 smart HDTV,and my kids all have streaming devices. One of the first things I did was flash the router to use DD-WRT, so I can't comment on the stock firmware. However, in this configuration, the router is rock solid and does not have random / unexplained drops. the speeds are fine and I have not experienced the 'choking' others have described. I wonder if many complainers realise that if the device they're using is only 802.11 N, that they won't get AC speeds. You're stuck with the 2 N channels at 300 each. You need AC compatible devices...and most smart TVs are still only N. Anyway....my house is small (~1800 sq ft) 2 storey and the modem is in the utility room of the basement to limit cable run length from the phone line input. I get very weak signal on the top floor and almost NIL signal outside. I was VERY surprised by this, as my tiny old TP Link WR941ND 300MPS router (when mounted in the same basement spot) was clear signal 2 houses away! My daughter could use our home network while babysitting the neighbours kids! Not any more. I thought with higher power and 3 big antenna, that this would be a monster. NOPE. I can't get signal in my own driveway. I'm going to have to invest in a range extender. Should have just spent that money on a better router. Would I buy this again? Nope. Do I dislike it so much that I'm rushing out to replace it? Nope. It'll do until it dies.

  • Have had no problems at all

I have a long history with Netgear routers. I have never had any problems including this one. I am only using the this R7000 for DHCP while I am using an EX7000 as an access point for my wireless network. It was easy easy to setup. Just follow the directions. No problems no issues
