  • Not as quick as my Netgear R7000
    by

from Toronto on December 4, 2019

I bought this because I have had a great experience with Netgear products before... I currently have a 5 year old R7000 in my basement. I was looking to upgrade and future proof with WIFI6 so picked up this router. Sadly for whatever reason, the connection strength, and this speed, just doesn't compare to the R7000 I already have. I have both routers on (yes I know interference might influence the testing but I'm not a scientist here!) And in the basement, from top level of my house (around 2000sqft) I hovered around 20-50 mbsp in the office with the ax4, yet my R7000 got me over 210mbsp. The slow speed was on top of a very frustrating setup process where they require you to download an app to do the initial setup. After multiple reboots, a boot loop and hard reset, lots of waiting for the app to find the router, I finally got it to work. Previous routers were significantly quicker to set up. I will be returning this.

  • It’s not bad

So I bought this new router in hopes of solving the problems of range / signal strength with multiple devices all running at the same time. This router was able to supply a decent connection to most devices around the house (2000sq ft). But when it came the computers, they only received about 1/4 of the speed. I had everything configured correctly but computers where only receiving 40Mbs up/down, while other devices we’re receiving 160. Didn’t want to waste anymore time, so I returned it the next day and paid a bit more for a Asus router. Other than that, you set this router up with your phone, you can do it via computer, but I didn’t notice the sticker on the back for that option until later. The app for the router is also sluggish and the router has to restart to apply any changes.

So far I'm very happy with this router. Pretty straightforward to set-up and very good signal and range with at least 3 devices streaming HD video and a handful more on all the time. Haven't had issues with it. It's a good buy for sure.
