No Video on 50" 1080p HD Samsung Smart TV

I have a 50" 1080p HD Samsung Smart TV (UN50J5200AF) and it's worked great for everything and anything I have ever connected to it, just about every device you can imagine. But for some reason, the Sony PlayStation Classic just doesn't work on it. I can't get any picture, either directly connected to the TV or via a HDMI slitter. Was very disappointed as I have to use my older and much smaller Samsung SyncMaster TA350 to play it.

A great Retro Emulation Station, and a not so good retro cash-grab.

Only a few of the games are any great, the emulation is somewhat shoddy (for the PAL region games that are on this system for some reason) and a lot of the games on the system are on the Playstation Store for the PS3 and the Vita. If you're gonna get this system, get it to hack the ever-living God out of it in order to play other PS1 games and use RetroArch (Hacking this thing is fairly safe as long as you use programs that don't actually mess with any of the internal software). That being said, a few games on this system are still great fun to play (I'm looking at you, Wild Arms), so this wouldn't be a bad purchase for someone that just wants to experience a taste of some memorable games from the PS1's library (And a few games that deserve to be left in your crawlspace to get ravaged by rodents). However, there are better ways to play these games, so keep that in mind. But seriously, why doesn't anyone seem to talk about Wild Arms anymore? That game rocks.

What a bad selection of games

The games for the console are just crap, waste of money for someone willing to buy, no respect for old times :(

Good retro console

Contrary to all the negative reviews, i enjoy this release from Sony. My old PS1 is still here and works. But for those who have lost theirs and got it broken, this is a great replacement for the time we had spent in these games. I agree with that the game selection may be questionable. But usually this won't be a problem. A hack will soon come out to get the games you want.

Not Worth it

Such little games, no dual thumb sticks, and no power cord. Definitely not worth the money.

Save your money

The emulation run poorly, there's a specific reason as to why its on sale after just being released. It was poorly made and should have been pushed back to work out its kinks. Also the selection of games it comes with isn't the best choice.

Hardware good, game selection mediocre

I think the hardware does a pretty good job of emulating the original PS1 experience. The caveat, and it is a big one, is that the selection of 20 included games is mediocre. There are a few great games, a few so-so - and a few real clunkers. I would rate it only a 2-star, but there is a way to play other games with the Classic, if you have some modest tech savvy. You can find info with a little Google searching. I rate the Classic a 4-star; I would have rated it 5 if only it had been shipped with a better choice of included games.

Worth now that it is discounted.

With a simple USB stick, it is really easy to add more game roms. Emulation is crappy in some games (Resident Evil kinda lags, same for Tekken 3).

So this isn't perfect... but this brings me back

I recently bought this system, reading up on the tidal wave of bad reviews. When I unboxed it and heard that iconic startup theme, it brought me back to my childhood. Now sure, there are some flaws, but this alone is worth it. Playing tekken 3 with my friend as we were both kids again is such an amazing feeling. And yes, the games are slower than usual, but I haven't played the system in years and I could notice it slightly. For the people who have not experienced these games or the classic playstation 1, they should definitely buy this product, especially since it's on sale for basically half price. I also hacked my playstation, getting more games such as X Men Mutant Academy, Soul Blade, and Street Fighter Ex Plus 2 which is also a must if you aren't satisfied with the selection of games. Overall recommend this product!

Worst official emulator on the market

Terrible selection of games, no power adapter, no dualshock controller and the worse: Running an open-source emulator so badly that it gives 15 frames per second on most games (even on the few NTSC games!). Avoid at all cost!

Power Bank

to those who complaint about the AC adapter, use a power bank.... i did this to my Nintendos and they work fine... to those who complaint about graphics, please understand this came out before HDMI, LED, 1080p, 4K tv... etc good luck and have fun

Waste of money

I was looking forward to getting this but after reading reviews about it I'm glad I didn't. Sony has no respect for their fans.

  • from Toronto, ON

Worth getting if you are handy putting own games on it

Looks great, games that come with it are not all "classics". But they are fun to play if you have no other means to play them. Not as bad as some reviews I've heard and read. However, it really shines with latest hacks that let your own selection of games on it. Easily done and howto's are on Youtube. I have got a feeling this is going to turn into a very convenient device for playing any PS1 game you want if you have PS1s in your closet that you can convert to ISO images or other means.

Is this a joke?

Charging you money for an emulator not even made by Sony. Includes PAL games and doesn't include an AC adapter. Only the biggest sony fanboys will defend this. Get yourselves the NES/SNES Classic instead.

Absolute garbage

please dont waste your money on this garbage. please.

Terrible emulation. Hopefully when it's hacked it gets much better.

Works fine if you have access to a USB keyboard during setup

To all the people complaining about games running in 50Hz, do your research before reviewing a product please. This system runs the PCSX open source emulator. If you plug in a USB keyboard and press escape, you can change the 50Hz setting to 60Hz with little difficulty, along with other settings. No, it doesn't upscale the graphics, and quite frankly shouldn't. This system is supposed to behave like the original, not change the experience. And analog sticks weren't released with the original system either, they came later. They aren't necessary. The missing 5VDC 1A AC adapter is a little weird, but I have a few extra phone chargers so I really don't care. The USB controllers are a nice feature. You should be able to use them on other devices that support USB controllers. I'm very impressed.

  • from Ottawa, ON

Maybe at $40 then it's worth it

They can't even include an ac adapter at over a hundred bucks How cheap can they be. This is really not worth it people, better of just downloading an emulator and using what ever controllers you already have. Even the games that are included suck

Silly people rate this 1/5

Sure it's not amazing, it's a bit much for what it is, but what did people really expect from a play station 1 emulator? It's honestly exactly what i was expecting. Heard this emulator has the possibility of it being able to be hacked/modded so it will have a lot more flexibility compared to the official emulators released by Nintendo if that ends up being true.

Steaming pile of garbage

I preordered this thing, but at the time I don't believe it was clear there would be no AC adapter. Also, the controller cords are about 3 feet too short to be comfortable in any living room, without having your unit sitting out in the middle of the floor. The games seem about what I expected. I didn't have a PlayStation back in the day, so I am not sure what games I should be nostalgic for... but it seems like there are more obvious titles they should have gunned for. You'd think after the mistakes Nintendo made with the NES Classic, Sony would have taken note and tried to make this offering a little better. Disappointed. This feels like it would be a better value if it were in the 85-100 dollar range

Not Worth Your Money

Sony does a terrible job trying to make tribute to the original PS1. It plays the PAL versions of some of the games (basically the slower versions) and does not attempt to touch up the games at all. The controllers do not even have the analog sticks (despite how some of the games support this and are fairly necessary to gameplay) and it does not even come with the AC adapter! The game selection is also terrible. They claim that the games "define an era" but reality is, a lot better games should be on this console. In fact, a lot of these games are rather filler installments. It's very clear Sony did not put much effort into the system and were just there for the money grab because Nintendo is doing it.

Don't Buy!!!!!

This is a genuine piece of garbage. The main screen is terrible. Half the games are running in PAL mode! There's lag in games like Tekken! The games included are brutal. There are a million and one reasons not to buy this system. This is not as good as what Nintendo has been doing.

  • from Toronto, ON

This has to be the worst device Sony has made. The game selection is weak, but that is not even the issue. Games are pal games converted to NTSC, so they do not run at full fps. The games emulator is awful so game audio is bad, and visuals are blurry. Stay away!! so disappointed.
