Review of the Samsung UN40MU6300 - Setup and First Impressions

Picked this TV up as a Boxing day special. Overall very pleased so far with both the picture and sound quality for my 13'x22' room. Unit actually came with both AV & Component adapters which was a bonus as the Internet literature indicated it only had HDMI, USB and Coaxial inputs. I believe only 1 of the AV/Component connections can be used at any time. Technically I use a AV/Component switch 4:1 for my older equipment such as: DVD, Satellite, Wii, VHS. Using the AV adapter I was able to connect it to my older (e.g. Wii) devices without issue. The TV worked fine with this AV/Component input but of course the remote did not switch between the various AV inputs as one would expect. For those older folks, I use a Harmony 880 Remote which I set up and it is working fine with this unit. Initial setup and using the remote was a bit intimidating at first but if you just take the defaults you are up and running quickly. Did find the setup screens a bit hard to read due the white/gray background. Once the TV detected my various Source Inputs, I then upgraded the f/w via the hardwired Ethernet connection without issue. I did get a Samsung Server error and was not able to connect or create a Samsung server account but the f/w and TV setup worked fine without it. Once set up, the only additional config changes I made were to set the Picture quality to "Natural" from "Standard". I also removed unwanted apps such as Google Play and added apps such as NetFlix from/to the TV Home page. Also disabled the HDMI-CEC functionality as it was not required. The only issues I ran into is that the coaxial input appears to be for antennae only. As a result the TV did not detect my Bell 4100 Satellite ExpressVu signal when I was using the Coaxial connection method. It did detect it correctly when I used the AV connection however with the Bell unit. All the Source Input connections are also on the right side of TV so if your source devices are on the left side you may need longer cables. Only missing item so far is that I have not yet found is if there is a DLNA app available which would allow me to access and play my home media directly. The unit does indicate it is DLNA certified. Gave rating a 4 out of 5 as I found the user doc very sparse and I also had the Samsung Server create account error during setup.

Great for use as a monitor

I have owned the last 2 generations of this tv (ju6500, ku6300 and mu6300) and have now bought this one. Two of them I used as a monitor and one was just a bedroom tv (although I tested it as a monitor as well. Pros: The mu6300 has really low input lag even in 4k 60hz 4:4:4 HDR mode. It's only about 20ms. This is significantly better than last year's model and most other tvs. It has great black levels and looks great and i don't notice any significant motion blur while gaming. Cons: It's not that bright of a tv by todays standards. (it may even have less maximum luminosity than lasst years ku6300), so it wouldn't be good for well lit living rooms. As a monitor, it is fine because one likely wouldn't want it at full brightness anyway sitting that close, and its fine for darker rooms. Also, it's harder to setup as a monitor than previous models. I found it a little confusing to get it into 4:4:4 mode. Overall it's a great 40 inch 4k monitor for the price (on sale) it's hard to beat it with it's super low input lag. I would say overall it's a bit better than last years model (especially for gaming on PC).

Great picture

Got this on sale to replace an older Samsung HD TV that served us very well. The older Samsung (740p) I thought had a great picture until I installed this one and was shocked at the difference in picture quality. So much clearer and the characters in shows seemed to be 3d. I figure that's because of the HDR. After having it for a couple of days I realised I had not set the receiver to 1040p from the 740p. That's when I got the second surprise as the picture became better. Setup was simple and WiFi works flawlessly. As mentioned in another review, HDMI and USB ports are on the right side, The electrical plug on the left. Apps are available with a Samsung account but there's not many of them but the stock apps suit my needs. I did run into one problem wall mounting the TV. The back bottom of the TV flares out so the use of the verticle mounting brackets that mount to a fixed base on the wall would not fit correctly. I used a different design mounting bracket (articulating arm type) and that worked well. These use a 200 x 200 plate that avoided the flare at the bottom. All in all very happy with this TV

pretty good

The picture quality is great, there's no doubt about that. When watching anything in 720p or above, the resolution is very good. I was slightly disappointed that there are so few apps available to download. I haven't created a samsung account yet, but i'm sure even if i did, there won't be more apps available then i already see. The remote is very simple and easy to use, there's also a feature where you can talk into the remote for easier convenience. You can say things such as "youtube...." or "google...." A side note - all the inputs such as the HDMI and ethernet jack are on the right side of the tv
