seagate 8 tb

Failed after 3 days !

  • from Toronto, ON

Unreliable. Weird Seagate warranty

Very unreliable. Saved a huge amount of important data on it, then it failed in less than 8 months. Seatgate won't pay for shipping it to them for replacement. They sent me a used refurbished one as a warranty replacement- one that's scratched all over and looks much older than the one I sent them; wasn't even in a Seagate box. Never seen anything like this.

Good unit - I've got 2 of them

The USB ports are NOT good enough to daisy chain a hard drive through but are extremely convenient for devices like mice or camera chip readers - certainly much more convenient that having to plug into the back panel of your computer! I like this model a LOT.

last less than a year, no warranty support. be aware

I had invested in this external storage a year ago. purshased two of them. . in less than 6 months, loss of data had been detected so many times then drive failed to be detected due to too many bad sectors. contacted support who has asked me to email them the diagnostic screen shot. then finally decided that no more support left for this item. be aware that, I had purchased only last year and drive failed in less than a year and no more warranty offered by Seagate. diagnostic details showing too many bad sectors on both 4 TB. make sure to check warranty left on any device before buying. I would advise you to verify minimum three years left on warranty before buying any storage device.

I bought two of those about a year ago. One failed after 5 months with uncorrectable sectors. I lost a lot of time but finally recovered all my files except one. The drive was exchanged by Seagate without problems. Now the second drive is failing as well. A week ago, windows detected the drive was corrupt and recovered all my files (placed them in a "found" directory...). This week however, windows tells me the drive is corrupt, it needs to be formatted. After loosing a lot of time again, Recuva seems to have located all my files and I am now recovering them. I have owned over 30 drives in the last 20 years, 3 of them Seagate, During that time 4 drive failed, 3 of them were Seagate.

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB 3.5" USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive (STEL8000100)

Hello All, No problems with drive it seems to work well for now. Keep in mind it's been working for about 8 days now. My comments is about the back up software. I'm no PC Geek so, As eazy as it is. There are no directions and or very limited instructions as to how to use it. Once it is running I really don't know if it is running, and then trying to manouver the system can be trouble some. Please make it eazy for us.

8 TB with hub Excellent Drive !!!

I bought this exact drive about 1 year ago and I'm now looking to buy another , again on sale. It works excellent however it seems very slow .I've been told by a few people to just change the cable and the speed will more than triple , I'm seldom in a big rush because I use it as a backup so I haven't changed the cable. Average speed at present is 24MB per sec. and that's fine for me.

Great drives

I've had a couple of these for a year now and many externals before. No failures. As someone who's worked at a large chain store (not this one) its worth remembering that how the store unloads stock can effect the device. The store i worked at didn't have pallets in the semi and everything was unloaded by hand with a few exceptions. A lot of tossing of merchandise was a normal occurrence. Needless to say i never buy electronics there. Think about this before you slag some device manufacturer.

  • from Kitchener, ON

You’d think I learned by now...

This is the 2nd time I’ve bought a Seagate product. Both have been a big disappointment. This 8TB one lasted less than 5 months, and all my backed up data is now inaccessible. NEVER AGAIN will I get Seagate.

  • from Halifax, NS

Have about eight of these, put all my media onto it for Plex that my family and I use. Never had an issue, works flawlessly.

  • from Edmonton, AB

DO NOT BUY - Its cheap for a reason

I had bought two of these over a period of 1 year, and the first one had read/write errors while copying files, the second one was a complete and utter waste. Died on me on 3rd day of use (had the ticking sound). Further more for their warranty does not support data recovery or one way shipping, you have to pay for everything to utilize the warranty. They only send you a new drive. This drive also goes on SALE during various times in the year, do not buy it regardless. They have a high failure rate that's why they go on sale, no one who has dealt with Seagate product buys another. The parts are made and assembled in China and Thailand.

If you are a PS4 user looking to expand your storage, please don't buy this drive. Apparently the maximum capacity drive you can use with a PS4 is 8TB, but for some reason, when you plug this into your PS4, it will display as 8.01TB, and will refuse to be formatted. Stay away from this one.

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB

BF Sale excellent transfer speed 90-160 MB/s Best HD I had

  • from Edmonton, AB

Broke first time using it

I have a few external HD's now and this is the first product I bought from Seagate and to be frank I'm disappointed. First time trying to save a large directory (over 8 GB of data) the drive crashed on me. After multiple tries of trying to fix it (via recommended instructions from Seagate website) I finally got frustrated and have now sent it back to Seagate to get a replacement via their 2 year warranty. We'll see how this replacement does, but I probably won't be buying another Seagate product.

  • from Fort Saskatchewan, AB

DO NOT BUY -- I would give it zero stars if I could

An absolute waste of money. I've owned several hard drives and this is unquestionably the worst I've ever owned. You're better off spending the money on a paperweight that actually actually looks nice rather than this hunk of plastic. I can't stress it any more, do NOT buy this drive.

  • from Calgary

Large Capacity - SLOW

Slower to write to than a USB drive. Average write is 24MB/s far below what the drive should be capable of. If it's storage you want, then this works well - if you want to wait for hours and hours to transfer wiles - this is great too - but if you need files from this drive on a regular basis - skip it and go for another drive.

  • from Toronto, ON

Good Drive. Cable slows drive down

Good Drive. Slow transfer speeds caused by USB cable supplied. Replaced from another device and transfer speeds shot up to 90+ MBs. Cable is funny one with regular USB at one end and double head at the other

  • from Toronto, ON

Lot of read errors - surprising bad drives

I got 3 drives and after copying 2tb I read it back, lost files, cannot read, system freezes. Tried diagnostics, found errors. Copy files onto second drive, and similar story, lost files, errors. SMART reports uncorrectable errors. I'm not sure about the 3rd drive. I'm really disappointed. Speed is good, but once you write to it, you should double check if data is there. The system is self repairing, but if data is lost it cannot recover.

Lots of storage - Great Value!

I've only had this for a day but very happy with it so far. Hits peak write speeds of 190mb/sec and runs quite cool - Max 47 C. My HD utility says it has a Barracuda drive inside (not the expected Archive) with 4 platters. Very impressive! If you buy this on sale you should be very happy with it. I've owned lots of hard drives over the last 20 years and surprisingly the only 2 that have failed were WD Green 2TB drives.

Do not purchase if you have a Mac

I have now tried two of these with a Mac. Both instantly became unreadable after following the directions precisely on how to reformat for Mac use.

  • from Scarborough, ON

Literally just bought this drive on VIP Thursday (Black Friday Sale Price). So far no problems however, while transferring data on windows 10 using USB 3.0, I only got a max rate of 30 MB/sec so, I tried it on my Windows 7 and got a max rate of 145-55 MB/sec, the problem is not the hard drive, but my PC. Good value for the price so far...

  • from Hamilton, ON

on sale on Black Friday but Bestbuy doesn't honor elements of the sale

It's on sale now from November 23 to 30 for 179.99 (good deal) and it says there there is a household limit of 5 in this advertisement. Well I went to the store today (Nov 23) and they would only sell me one only. Not only that, you can't go to the store shelves and pick one up, you have to go to the cashier and they go to this locked cabinet at the front of the store and pull one out. The manager said it says limit of one on the fine print of the the flyer, but I just got the Black Friday flyer from the store today and nowhere does it list the Seagate Drive on the flyer. So anyways, the store is the one on the Hamilton Mountain in Ontario off of Stone Church Road. I just had to write this review to call out the store BS because it's ridiculous how they lied and wasted my time.

The Dash Board does not work with Windows 10

The Dashbord to be downloaded from Seagate does not work. I have attempted to download the Mircosoft VC Redirect 2010 SP1 (x86) software (which one need to operate a Seagate Dashboard) only to discover that it works only for XP and Windows 7.0 All attempts were NIL for windows 10. Then I discovered that in Windows 10 one can go into settings and there one can program Windows 10 to automatically make back-ups for different Back-up drives. I am very disappointed (I lost a lot of time figuring out why the Dasboard does not work). On one of the Seagate Screens they say that the Dashbord for Windows 10 is under construction and that one should check later. The one for Mac exists. Hard to understand the Strategy of Seagate to let down their Windows based customers.

Good Drive so far, plus 2 extra USB 3 ports, very handy!

Just bought my second Seagate 8TB ext drive/hub; have had the first for 3-4 months, can't really say about long term durability yet; don't use the drives every day. Plugged the drive into the computer and immediately copied several directories with about 80GB of data to the external drive. Started at a transfer rate of about 45 MB/sec, then increased over the first 30 seconds up to 80-90 MB/sec and from there on fluctuated between 80 to 136 MB/sec. A second transfer of about 4.6 GB had a consistent transfer rate of 120 MB/sec. This is very similar performance to what I get on my WD MyBook external drives. I have seen several reviewers complain that this drive is slow; this has NOT been my experience! It is important to remember that USB 3.0 seems to be a cranky kind of a data transfer standard, and that transfer rates vary depending on the size and type of file! I find that with large numbers of small files such as image files about 1 MB or smaller, the transfer rate will slow right down, occasionally into the single digit range, and that the transfer speed seems to be faster with larger image files such as DSLR RAW files or movie files. I have seen this happen with the WD MyBook drives as well, so it's not unique to Seagate. This drive has an indicator light (the new WD 8TB MyBook does NOT have one), but it is of limited use; the light level fluctuates slowly bright/dim during data transfers, remains on constantly when the drive is active but not transferring data, and shuts off when the unit goes into sleep mode. The only cons I can see with this drive are: 1 - Not really an 8 TB drive. Under "properties" in windows, it only lists the capacity as 7.27 TB, which is significantly less than advertised. This is actually the same as my WD Mybook 8TB drive; its capacity also reads in windows as 7.27 TB, so not unique to Seagate. 2 - One other reviewer mentioned the case design; it is very narrow and therefore a little unstable and prone to falling over. Overall, a pretty good drive so far; if it lasts as well as my WD drives it will be an excellent value for money.

  • from Richmond Hill, ON

I bought 2 of these, one worked fine, the other one gives me constant CRC errors and runs ridiculously slow. I tried to copy 4tb worth of files from my old drive into the new one and Windows estimates it will take about 50.3 days to complete the job.

Have never had any problems with Seagate hard drives. Used them the last 15 years or so.

Great Value

I got this during Boxing Day sales, totally worth it! It has been running for 2 months or so running 24/7 attached to my NAS server and there have been no issues.

  • from windsor,on

excellent value

i plugged it in and a few seconds later it connected....the speed is very good and its very it on sale which is better

  • from Mississauga, ON

Excellent archive drive

Nothing of merit to note - it functions well, quick reads but slow writes (normal for an SMR drive). I use it as a media backup so it definitely serves it's purpose. The hub is attractive and the soft-white logo is not too bright or distracting. I would purchase another without question. Especially good based on the Boxing Day sale price I paid (lowest I'd ever seen for 8TB).

  • from Brampton

great buy during boxing day

For the price I paid, one hundred forty off regular price, very good value for money.

Very Slow USB 3 hard drive

This hard drive has a lot of storage space with a very very very slow transfer speed. The speed is less than 30 Mbps. It is unbelievable slow for an USB 3 hard drive. If you don't mind the slow speed it will be OK. I am very upset with the slow speed so that I return it to Best buy. I give it three stars. One star is for Best buy good return policy. Thank you Best buy.

  • from Ajax, ON

Compatible with Ubuntu

I used this in a NAS server. I connected it to the USB3 port on my ZOTAC CI320. This is fully compatible with ntfs-3g and I am also using NFS & Samba to share this drive. Please note that this drive uses shingled magnetic recording (SMR), Over gigabit I consistently got 31MB/s writing to the drive. I did not reformat the drive as ext4 instead I used the default ntfs pre-formatted file system since I was uncertain if Linux could create a 8TB partition and format it. I'm pretty sure nothing bad will happen ....

  • from Burnaby, BC

Expected results (purchased for a week)

I can't comment on it's reliability yet. Since I only got it for a week at the time of writing this review. But I already filled it up with my backups. Transfer speeds ranges depending on which USB port I connect it to. If I connect to a USB2 port, i get around 20-30MB/s. If I connect it to a USB3 port, I get around 70-85MB/s. It does its job well (so far) which is backing up my data.

  • from Beauharnois, QC

bought 5

So far, all 5 drives are functioning fine. The design of the case is very poor as the rubber feet suggest you should stand the drive upright as shown in the picture - however if the drive tips over while powered on, expect it to live a very short life. Lay the drive on it's side or use it internally. If you buy this drive, be very gentle with it or risk it failing.

  • from Montréal, QC

Pretty slow for a 3.0

This HDD actually has around 7.27 TB, pretty far from 8.0. I expected around 7.5-7.7 but to have almost a whole TB less than advertised is pretty dumb. Also, the transfer speed is very slow compared to other devices with 3.0 connection; I get less than 30 MB per second... horrible for something as large scale as 8 TB. I had almost 100 MB/s on my last 3 TB HDD and need to upgrade because of storage requirements. Anyways, in summary, the storage is good if you KNOW you're getting 7.27 TB and less than 30 MB/s transfer speed.

  • from Richmond, BC

Problems starts to show after 2 weeks.

Pro: I like the hub idea, and this has a lot of storage. Con: It is slow. Also, it is very unreliable. After 2 weeks, the transfer speed dropped significantly, and files starts to disappear. Seagate tends to fail quite often for me, so I think I will go with other brands from now on.

  • from Barrie, ON

Just Awesome!

As I own over 12 various external hard drives, I must say this is the best one so far. Quick and easy to use with no issues.

  • from Guelph, ON

Boxing Day Availability

Amazing how the online store suddenly has stock on these only a day after being sold out from the Boxing Day sale.

  • from Richmond, BC

Seagate produces a lot of duds.

I got one in November, and initially, I like the size it held, and the hub feature was a nice touch. The only downside was the slow transfer speed, but overall, I was happy with it. Then, less than a week latter, the transfer speed dropped significantly. I try it on 2 computers, and it is the same. A day or two latter, files I had put in there disappeared, and I cannot find them at all. Luckily, it all happened within 30 days, so I was able to return it for a full refund, but I probably will stay away from Seagate from now on, as I have a 1 in 4 success ratio with the company.

Best External Drive I Have Owned

Bought the original 8 TB Seagate Backup Plus drive in September and started backing up my PC files and then tried working with my wife's MacBook. Made the drive inaccessible to both file systems after extensive back and forth with Seagate Tech support, it was finally decided to send it back for repair. Got the new drive in about 10 days. What I like most about it is the two USB ports on the drive...I can plug in my little WD Passport drive and copy files at the same time. It's almost like the old SCSI daisy chain without the hassle. Super fast and massive storage for all my children's old videos and pictures. So good I bought a second one for my wife's MacBook (only 4 TB though). Formatted for HFS and so far so good!

  • from Collingwood, ON

I bought several of these (6) 8 TB USB hard drives a month ago. Two have already failed. They die without warning, give a code 43, and will not reconnect with your computer. If you buy this model, you can expect it to fail at any time. I have had (and still have them) several Western Digital hard drives through the years, and none of them have ever failed me. I will never buy another Seagate external hard drive.

Great backup drive

I don't care about Cloud and I don't use it but this item is great as a backup drive. No fuss to install and no fuss to backup. Simple, quick and easy and 8 TB at a great price (well bought it on Black Friday so got a great deal).
