  • Great picture, horrible electronics

1 month in on ownership Well, lots to like, a few things I don't like. First - this is the best picture I have ever seen from any display device. I've been a high end projector owner for a long time, going back to the original Qualia. Currently own a JVC NX9 in a dedicated room. My Wife and I were watching the latest season of expanse. Started a few episodes on the Z9G, then went down to the theater. The difference in picture quality was so jarring, we went back upstairs. Then, into the bedroom for one final episode on the LG E8, our previous ”best picture we have ever seen” display. Inky blacks are there, but again, the picture just doesn't pop like it does on the Z9G. After a lot of playing around, the difference is really how it's representing Dolby Vision content. I'm guessing many of the shows in DV target a very high peak luminance. This TV has 5x the peak brightness of the oled and projector. This is turning out to be a very big difference in how the picture is perceived - It's like looking out a window. 2) the arc/earc via hdmi just works. This has always been finicky with my other sets, but they seemed to have nailed it. The not so good... 1)There was a lot of marketing fluff around the built in speakers and Dolby Atmos capability, and I had high hopes. Sound is average to below average. I wouldn't rely on it if you have a choice 2) there are a number of Sony bloatware apps you can't delete, and they didn't leave a lot of space left over for third party apps. Be prepared to dedicate a USB Drive (SSD RECOMMENDED) for storage The bad: 1) the TV can't internally render 8k video files (ANY type of encoding) at all. It can't play them from a high speed USB, can't stream them from another machine, nothing. I thought something was wrong and put in a support ticket, and their answer was it will only do 8k as input from one HDMI port. I have an 80 dollar Chinese androidtv box connected via hdmi at 8k and it can render them fine. A little shocked Sony didn't put the necessary horsepower in at this price point. 2) ethernet port is only 100 Mbs. I guess you could argue since it can't handle 8k streaming, it shouldn't need a gig connection.. It couldn't handle my gopro files, which are recorded 4k at 120 Mbs. This is literally from the dark ages. It does do 5ghz wireless, but I found it defaults to 2.4. I had to make a dedicated 5ghz only ssid to get it to connect, and I still couldn't play my gopro files without stuttering. So far, very happy with the purchase, but it's making me unhappy with my other displays.... Especially on prime/netflix/Disney+ dolby vision content. On regular HDR the Oled becomes competitive again and on non HDR the projector is in the hunt. I have a feeling the next few years will be all about the nits....

All I can say is wow! Significantly brighter then the Samsung 8k. Makes 4k HDR and dolby vision content look fantastic. 8k content if you can find it, or high resolution photos make the television look like you are looking out of a window. There is a three dimensional quality to the picture that is hard to describe, but feels very lifelike. I have had no issues with andoird TV, but it did update itself as soon as I put the TV on my network. I own a 65 inch LG oled, and always thought the picture couldn't get any better. While the blacks are not as good on the Sony, the overall picture, focus, details and that crazy peak brightness are clearly better. Wish Sony would let owners download the 8k demo content they were showing off in the store. My hone would be a sales office for these models if I could show it off more - that is a big Bravo Sony
