Decent Entry Level Smart TV, but Minimalist Remote Spoils the Experience

Positives: thin, light, small bezel and decent picture that is clear with good tone and saturation overall. It has 3 HDMI ports and one with ARC which makes hooking up an HDMI soundbar much simpler. Sound from the built-in speakers is actually quite good for what it is - loud and clear with reasonable depth. The user interface is simple and fairly intuitive. It would be nicer if there was an option to use the earphone jack as an audio-out with the speakers rather than cutting them off, but this is an entry level TV. Cons: the remote really cripples the user experience with this tv, and the Roku implementation is limited. The remote is stripped down for simplicity/cost cutting - besides side-mounted volume buttons, it has no numbers or specific function buttons so changing channels is sequential up or down, and changing inputs or adjustments involves going to a menu screen and alot of scrolling. Unlike the photo, the 4 bottom buttons are pre-programmed for Netflix and 3 other paid US channels that are pretty useless and cannot be reassigned. You can control the TV with a Roku app on a phone, but its not as handy as the remote. If TCL or somebody else comes out with a universal remote that can access some of the functions more directly, this TV can really shine. Its not a bad TV for the low price, but if you want more direct control of functions, it might try your patience.
