  • Mislead

from Porters Lake on 2 juin 2019

Like a lot of other people that I saw reviews of this product, AFTER I purchased it, I was mislead as to its capabilities. THIS DRIVE IS NOT A PLUG AND PLAY NETWORKABLE DEVICE. I bought this drive with the understanding that it worked the same way as the “My Cloud” Drive I bought a year ago. I’m was told by staff at the store it worked the same way. I could plug it in on my Ethernet network and it would show up as a public device that any computer on the networks could access. This is not the case. This drive through is NOT network discoverable. It requires you to install an app in order to access the drive. Only one of my computers are able to see the drive using the app. The other doesn’t, and a third has Linux, which is unsupported. It does not come with a built in dashboard app like previous versions which allow you to modify setting and schedule backups, etc. Do not be mislead by staff as to the capabilities of this device. I paid a lot of money for a useless drive that is a paperweight on my shelf. Once opened, you cannot return it...and foolishly, I bought the best buy extended warranty. NOT IMPRESSED.

  • An App?

from Best Buy US on 8 février 2019

I used to get mycloud drives all the time because I liked the simple web interface that Western Digital offered to access and configure the drives. This one though you have to first create an account with WD like you would create an apple ID or a Microsoft account. That is stupid enough already but the account sign up didn't work. When I called WD to find out if the registration for the account arrived on their end the chap and me reset the drive and do all sorts of things completely unrelated to creating an account. After wasting some more time I just surrendered put it back in the box and created a drive share through the router that has a usb port. I don't really care for accessing the drive through yet another app on my phone. As for NAS drives Buffalo still has a decent web interface you can access through a Browser.

  • Great product and software to go with it.

I was a bit disappointed that it did not actually manage backups. It does sync files that you select. Actual backups must be done with 3rd party software. I use Windows backup and direct to this drive which is auto mounted. The really great thing is you can select a file to share and send a link to whom you would like to share the file with. You can also access your synced files remotely with phone, iPad, laptop if you have downloaded the app. I provided access for one of my kids and he has a separate partition to backup and manage his files. Totally independent of mine. He now has true geographical redundancy for his critical files.
