- Fast but runs way too hot- September 23, 2020
This is the fastest 7200rpm hard drive I've ever owned. I get over 270 mbps read/write speeds unfortunately it can't be used for more than about 20 minutes without drive temps reaching 60+ degrees Celsius in a very cool room with lots of ventilation. I then have to shut it down for hours before the temps will settle down since this constant temp will destroy the drive. I know these drives run hot but this is a bit ridiculous. My internal only gets to about 45 degrees max under stress. Not sure if it should be exchanged or if they're all like this.

I'm a long time WesternDigital fan and until this purchase would use their storage devices exclusively in my computers and external drives. The WD MyBook (4TB) that was previously used as storage for the XBox was silent and bulletproof. Upon receipt of this one, the first thing I noticed was that is has got a piece of plastic rattling around inside of the enclosure which I was willing to overlook since the drive will be stationary on a shelf anyway. The drive makes horrendous noises while being accessed and has also twice caused games to freeze for a second while the drive randomly spins and makes a racket. Before issuing an RMA, WesternDigital would like the diagnostic run on the drive which is now at 15% after running for almost 14 hours.

Report - Excellent External Gaming Hard Drive- May 7, 2021
Picked up this external hard drive to expand my PS5 storage. You can play PS4 games directly from the external drive and store PS5 games on it to transfer back to the console when you want to use it. Very fast transfer time for the games. An SSD drive would be faster but you can't get the storage size (8TB). Having the two USB charging ports on it is great for charging you accessories (headphones, controllers, etc.). Highly recommend.
