Laser Projectors
For the brightest images, choose a laser projector
One of the first steps to choosing a home theatre projector is to decide whether you’d like a laser projector or a lamp projector. For amazing colour, brightness, and contrast, more and more people are opting to install a laser projector in their home theatre.
What is a laser projector?
Laser projectors are very different from lamp projectors and knowing the difference will help you decide which type is best for your home.
Unlike a lamp projector that uses a white light bulb to filter colours into an image, a laser projector uses lasers to create an image. A laser projector usually has three lasers in red, blue, and green, and they deflect off a chip inside the projector. The deflected light is magnified, and focus is achieved using a lens, with the end result being a bright image projected onto your projector screen.
Laser projector vs LED projector
When you choose a 4K laser projector for your home theatre, you’re adding a projector that can display a vivid, ultra-bright image. Because they use lasers instead of a bulb, laser projectors tend to be brighter than other projectors, and rather than dimming over time they maintain that brightness for the lifetime of the projector. Laser projectors have a brightness level of 3500 lumens or higher, while LED projectors can only display a maximum of 2000 lumens.
A laser projector will have a higher initial cost than an LED projector, but you will have to factor in the cost of replacing the bulb in an LED projector. Because of the bulb, LED projectors often result in more energy use than laser projectors. You’ll also find that a LED projector has a lamp that will last approximately 10,000 hours, while a laser projector will last approximately 30,000 hours.
If you need a small projector, you’ll find that laser projectors are less portable than LED projectors. They tend to be bulkier and heavier. On the other hand, LED projectors are available in mini or as pocket projectors so you can take them with you wherever you go.
