  • An Ultra take on the Apple Watch

What to expect with the Apple Watch Ultra

This is the first time Apple has taken its smartwatch in a different direction. The Apple Watch Ultra is a tougher design built to withstand the challenges and rigours associated with very active and demanding lifestyles. It retains the same overall look of Apple’s smartwatch lineup, yet veers in other directions in some key ways.

It only comes in one size at 49mm, making it the largest model Apple offers to date. The body is made of aerospace-grade titanium and has a raised lip to add some protection for the rugged sapphire display. In addition to the side button, a new action button is on the corner that acts as quick start/stop exercise button that you can customize to do more.

A new watch also means new straps, and they come in three particular styles. Alpine Loops weave together two bands with titanium loops. Trail Loop bands are thinner, mostly made of fabrics that are comfortable. Ocean Loop bands are more ruggedized, capable of handling swimming and diving activities.

    Tough and ready to go

Apple built this watch to handle a wide range of activity. It can work running in the wilderness, skiing in the mountains, or diving to see wreckage underwater. It can submerge up to 100 metres and a smartwatch rarity in that it has EN13399 protection for diving.* Apple will also offer a new Oceanic+ app made for divers of all experience levels.**

It can track a wide range of exercises, and will do it under more varied conditions. By supporting L1 + L5 GPS, it can establish and hold a GPS signal in dense urban environments where tall buildings could get in the way of maintaining the connection.

A new design and new features also means a bigger battery. It can go for up to 36 hours under normal usage, double what other Apple Watch models can do. Turn Low Power Mode on will stretch that out to 60 hours.***

    Safety in numbers

The Apple Watch Ultra has safety in mind from the very start. If you’re lost or need to get someone’s attention, the watch’s own speaker can blast an 86 dB siren to do that. Press and hold the side button to activate the Emergency SOS function to contact emergency response and get help when you desperately need it.

This watch also comes with a new sensor that enables Crash Detection, an all-new feature that kicks in when you’ve been in a collision while driving. A hard impact or change in air pressure, like when an airbag goes off, puts it into action asking if you want to call first responders right away. If incapacitated, the Watch Ultra is capable of making the call on its own, especially because all versions of the watch have both GPS and cellular connections.
