Black Stainless Steel Appliances
Update your kitchen with black stainless steel appliances
What is black stainless steel and how is it different from slate?
Black stainless steel appliances are increasing in popularity thanks to their classy, sophisticated, modern look and ability to coordinate nicely with all finishes and colours of cabinetry in the kitchen.
Black stainless steel consists of a coating that’s placed overtop stainless steel to give the appliance a nice metallic look and darker finish. This might include a protective coating of a material like polymer, or, in the case of some brands, even two coating layers for added durability.
While slate is similar, also offered in black, it has a warmer matte finish that some might prefer versus the colder look of black stainless steel. Inspired by stone, slate offers an earthier tone, and, like black stainless steel, is also resistant to smudges and fingerprints.
What is the benefit of black stainless steel appliances?
Black stainless steel appliances are smudge and fingerprint-proof, so you won’t find water spots and streaks like you’d typically find with traditional stainless steel. They are also easier to clean since you don’t need to use special polishes or stainless steel cleaner. For most black stainless steel appliances, use a soft cloth or dishtowel and some warm water, and wipe going in the direction of the grain. You can also use a non-abrasive mild detergent/soap, mineral oil, or even window cleaner if there are stains or you want a deeper clean. With some models, you can still use stainless steel cleaner if you prefer but check the manual for recommendations.
Note that while black stainless steel appliances are scratch-resistant, this doesn’t mean that they can’t scratch. And because of the darker hue, if they do get scratched, it can be more noticeable than with plain stainless. Because of this, you need to be particularly cautious. Many manufacturers, however, offer or recommend touch-up paint you can use in the event of deep scratches.
What should you consider when deciding on black stainless steel appliances?
If you’re considering updating your kitchen with this new finish, go all in and opt for a black stainless steel fridge, dishwasher, oven/range, and even microwave, all in the same finish. Note that the black stainless tint might not be exactly the same for all manufacturers, so you want to ensure that the hue matches if you’re getting multiple appliances and considering different brands. Black stainless and black slate might not look good together, so go for one or the other when selecting your appliances.
If you have young children, slate might be the better option since it’s generally more resistant to scratches. Otherwise, investigate to find the best black stainless steel appliances that have dual-coated layers or extra-durable coatings to better resist scratches.
Consider switching all of your appliances to black stainless, even beyond the kitchen, for a seamless look in your home. In addition to major kitchen appliances, for instance, you can get washing machines and dryers in black stainless as well.
