The new Microsoft foldable phone/tablet
Microsoft first released the Surface Duo, its ground-breaking, dual-screen foldable phone in 2020. In 2021, the Surface Duo 2 was released.
Is it a phone or a tablet? Folded, the Surface Duo is the size of a smartphone. You can use it to take calls, run Android apps, and snap photos—just like your phone. However, the Surface Duo unfolds to tablet size. In the latest version, its dual PixelSense displays become a single, 8.3-inch PixelSense Fusion display. It’s like being able to carry a tablet in your pocket.
Key Surface Duo features
Surface Duo 2 is equipped with all the technology you expect to find in an advanced Android smartphone.
It’s powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The latest 5G cellular connectivity is supplemented by Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 wireless, along with USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 with fast-charging and video output support. It features an integrated fingerprint reader for instant, secure access. The optional Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus attaches magnetically to the Surface Duo where it wirelessly charges.
The new Surface Duo 2 gets a big camera upgrade to an AI-optimized 12MP Dynamic triple lens camera system: 12MP f1.7 main wide, 12MP f2.4 2x telephoto, and 16MP f2.2 utlra-wide. The primary camera can shoot 4K video and panorama photos. It’s equipped with a dual-LED flash and supports HDR. The front selfie cam has a 12MP sensor and can shoot 1080p video. An integrated microphone is equipped with noice-cancellation and beamforming technology, and stereo speakers provide an elevated listening experience.
Its 4449 mAh battery is rated for up to 15.5 hours of local video playback or 28 hours of talk time.
Without a doubt, the key Surface Duo features are its revolutionary 360-degree hinge and dual PixelSense displays.
Screen size and benefits of the dual screen design
Each of the Surface Duo 2’s PixelSense touchscreen displays is a 5.8-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2688 x 1892 pixels. That’s 401 PPI for razor-sharp text. The displays offer 100% SRGB wide colour coverage and up to 800 nits brightness. Scrolling is incredibly smooth, thanks to a 90Hz refresh rate. The displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
The inner edge of the displays is curved so that when the Surface Duo 2 is closed, notifications are displayed along the hinged edge.
When opened, the dual PixelSense Displays combine to form a single 8.3-inch AMOLED PixelSense Fusion display. It’s essentially a tablet that folds to fit in a pocket and weighs just 284g.
