Open box heavy use, not open box excellent
- 25 février 2023[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought as open box excelente. It looks like it was used for a year por more, but with a heavy use. Just a waste of time and money for bestbuy because I'll be returning this asap. I would not pay $50 for this. They sold it close to $300. I'm not sure how they determined that the condition is excellent. Lol

I am so impressed...that sound!
- 31 octobre 2019[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was sent this product to review and I Can’t believe how lucky I am. There is so much about the speaker that I like. The compactness is perfect. I have it on my night stand at night and can easily transport it un the morning as I get ready for work. I don’t need an outlet. I don’t have to worry about space. I also enjoy its compatibility with Alexa. I just request my favorite artist and it plays. The sound is probably the best I have heard in any speaker. It’s hard to believe that crispness is coming out of that speaker. Finally, I really like the look of the speaker. It is really stylish. The handle is really cute. I like the way it lights up. And I love the shape of the speaker. I am very impressed.

Really disappointing. Too much bass!
- 1 décembre 2019[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The packaging for the Bose Portable Home Speaker was nice and simple and minimal. The build quality, as usual with Bose, is fantastic. Even the base it comes with is well manufactured. Setting up the Portable Home Speaker with the Bose music app was easy. I named the speaker, launched a song, chose the speaker as output, and boom. Easy. Unfortunately, the rest was disappointing. I have go-to songs for testing speakers. Songs that cover loud, driving, subtle, nuanced, in your face sonic ranges. Basically songs that cover the entire musical spectrum. These include Pat Metheny Group's "The Roots of Coincidence" and "Follow Me" from the album "Imaginary Day" as well as their entire album "The Way Up." As soon as the bass drum stared at the beginning of "The Way Up" it sounded distorted as if the drum was hitting plastic. It buzzed. While playing "The Roots of Coincidence" I had to set the bass to -50 (or even lower) or it just sounded like mud with the bass very overpowering. It also sounded muffled, smooshed together, not much separation. Even at low volumes, I felt that the speaker handled bass really poorly. I found myself setting the bass into negative numbers. You'd think at zero the bass wouldn't be so bad, but it was. This speaker seemed to have so much emphasis on bass, but it couldn't handle bass well at all. It was very difficult to find a neutral sound field to let the recording shine. I had to keep adjusting the treble and bass settings every album and sometimes every song. Like I said, this was really disappointing. I'm a HUGE Bose fan. My favorite wireless speaker from them is the Soundlink Mini II. For such a small speaker, it handles bass much better than the Portable Home Speaker. I am always excited about new Bose products. This one just didn't hit the mark for me.

Excellent sound quality but not so smart assistant
- 5 novembre 2019This is the first portable smart speaker that I use. All the other smart speakers I have used are all wired so a little liberty from all the wires and knowing that I can take my music with me everywhere in the house and out and about is a great new feeling that I welcome. I will talk about the appearance first, since that would be the first impression from picking up the speaker in store. It is very well built and feels good to the touch. The speaker itself is relatively heavy, heavier than Amazon Echo, and about the same weight with the Sonos Play One albeit slightly thinner. The bottom grille is made from metal and feels cool to the touch. The top half is made from hard plastic and is rather solid. The top buttons are all covered by a one-piece rubber – no touch control here which is understandable when this is geared toward the outdoor users. The strap holding the speaker is also made from fabric which is durable and share the same outdoorsy theme. Next is sound quality, which there is only one word to describe: excellent. It is Bose sound quality. The sound is rich and the bass is strong, and the volume can be cranked up really high despite the small form. Playing this in my flat, I always keep it at 30% to avoid annoying my neighbours. Even music streaming via Bluetooth from my phone sounds better than when I play using my Amazon Echo or my Sonos Play One. My only dislike about the speaker is its integration of Alexa and Google Assistant. In my case, I use Alexa more as I already have other devices connected so I can control them via voice control. It works. I can control my Dyson fan with this. I can also ask the speaker to reduce/increase its own volume. However, I cannot ask “Alexa, connect to my phone” as I usually do with my Echo. Therefore, when I want to play music from my phone, I’ll have to go through another step which is to press the Bluetooth button on the speaker. If there are multiple devices already connected to the speaker before, the process would be to load up Bose Music app from the phone and choose which device to connect to, then play music from that device. It’s a bit of a hassle, but I guess it is because Alexa is not designed by Bose so it will have some functions limited to only its Amazon devices. Another problem I encounter is that the microphone does not seem to catch ‘Alexa’ call fast enough whilst music is being played, or when I’m far away (same distance works with my Echo). It may have something to do with the microphone sensitivity set up by Bose themselves. Also issues with smart assistant, when out and about and no wifi connection, Alexa or Google Assistant won’t work. It is pretty much the same with my Amazon Echo and Google Home as when my broadband connection was disconnected last week, they refused to work as well, so I’m not blaming Bose here. I just wish that they’d have an option to utilise the phone’s Internet connection for Alexa/Google Assistant. All in all, great speaker with excellent sound quality, but a bit of a let down in the terms of integration with smart assistant services.
