What customers are saying

The product has received mixed reviews. Many customers praise its ability to make great-tasting espresso and lattes, with a good crema and easy-to-use features. However, a significant number of users have reported issues with the machine's durability and reliability, such as leaks, clogged filters, weak pressure, and problems with the steam wand. While it can make a decent cup of coffee for the price, its quality and durability appear inconsistent.

    Going strong after 10 years…but

    Reviewed by - November 1, 2025

The portafilter is 50ml, not 54ml or even 58ml like other Expresso machines. So buying tamps and other accessories is problematic. The extraction is not the typical volume. Instead of 17-18 grams of ground beans, you’re lucky if the portafilter can be filled with 14g. The milk steamer wand now has no coating left, just looks like copper. Idk. For bang for the buck, it works. Just don’t expect too much from it than the average expresso. The temps are good, the water container holds a decent volume. The hot plate is good. I find myself now wanting more from my expresso maker, just not prepared to shell out thousands of dollars.

    The best

I love this espresso machine. it makes great espresso, is easy to use, and is a quality piece of equipment that will last a long time. i already have one of these, which i bought 13 years ago - and it works perfectly (even though i've only descaled it once). i bought this 2nd machine just to be sure i had one that was working in case we go into a 2nd lockdown and manufacturing stops - because i can't live without my espresso. and this machine is the best. Read the reviews by experts - they all rave about this machine and can't believe the low price point for it. i couldn't agree more!

Breville CafĂŠ Roma Pump Espresso Machine

    Reviewed by J.Q - February 24, 2016

It does the CREME nicely, the water temperature needs to be hotter, I realize in the manual it says to warm up your espresso cups, I found that strange. Is it just the machine I bought,? NO, a friend of mine bought the exact one, in fact we purchased one each the same day and their machine also does not get the espresso hot enough....would I recommend it to anyone else? not likely, would I ever buy another one? I do not think so. I can not comment on their other espresso machines, but I have owned 2 other brands of espresso machines before this machine, also in the same price range, I did not need to warm up or heat up the espresso cups....sorry Breville you only get a 3 star.

    A well built entry-level machine.

    Reviewed by Peter - December 16, 2017

I bought this espresso maker over 4 years ago as an upgrade from a cheap steam driven machine and it's still going strong with multiple daily use-. A well built entry-level pump-driven machine that produces rich crema from store-bought pre-packaged coffee that steam based machines just couldn't. It comes with 2 pressurized filters for single or double shot, a filter for coffee pod, stainless steel milk jug, 2 ceramic espresso cups and saucers sets, cleaning tools and a 2 in 1 plastic measuring spoon/tamper. Highly recommended especially when it's on sale.

    Would repurchase over and over.

This espresso machine works so well and the price is ridiculous! Mine died after 7 years and I actually blame the fact I moved as to why it died... I think someone might have dropped it because it started making very watery coffee a few days after moving and it completely died within 2 weeks. It was a no brainer to repurchase the exact same one! I removed a star because I wish it was smaller, and I find it a bit loud compared to my boyfriend's Breville Bambino, but funnily enough my boyfriend prefers my Breville Café Roma, stating the crema is better (it is!). I absolutely recommend this espresso machine!

    INCONSITENT PRODUCT

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - May 19, 2022

After using the coffee maker for a few months, the lever mechanism would not turn. I had to leave the machine on for half an hour for it to unlock itself. Metal expansion problem I guess. Breville sent me a new product but this one sometimes leaks between the portafilter and the bracket that fixes it to the machine. This second machine does not manage to extract all the cream from the coffee like the previous one. The foam it produces is not as consistent as with the previous one. I believe the reason for this is that the portafilter does not sit properly on the gasket which causes some of the pump pressure to escape through the gasket.

    Excellent Espresso Machine!

    Reviewed by Maria - April 3, 2012

Great tasting crema espresso coffee! High quality and stylish stainless steel looks, with a powerful 15 bar pump for rich flavour crema espresso, cappuccinos and lattes. Froth hot chocolate milk too. Read instructions and practice to get to know your machine. Tips: 1) Buy the Crema Espresso Grind Coffee. 2) Be sure to press removable water tank down until you hear a click, or it will not run water to make coffee. 3) Clean after each use, especially if you use the milk frother, run steam to clean it, and use supplied pin, milk may dry and clog hole. Makes great tasting coffee, excellent espresso machine!

    Makes Great Espresso

    Reviewed by Chris - July 7, 2020

This is a compact machine that makes great espresso. We've had ours for 5+ years and have made thousands of coffees with it. It just stopped working and I'm buying a new one because I like it so much (if I can fix the current one I'll put it in my travel trailer). I gave it 4 stars because 5 stars would be perfection but there are a few minor things I've noticed (listed below). We primarily drink espresso and Americanos and this machine is perfect for us. The steam wand is a bit weak; it takes a long time to get the milk to temperature and introduces quit a bit of water. We have a separate milk steamer for when we want coffee with milk/foam. Overall it's a great little machine that takes minimal counter space, looks good and makes excellent espresso. Pros: - makes excellent espresso: perfect temperature, great crema. - compact, takes up very little counter space - nice appearance - heats up quickly - great value - very easy to clean Cons: - colour of the tank and viewing window makes it difficult to see the water level in the tank - water tank lid rattles at times - cup "walks" across the grate when unattended; need to hold the cup or put paper towel under it. - steam wand is weak and takes a while to steam/froth milk

    Quite useful.

I did not get my unit brand new. I found mine in a thrift store for $10 to $15 (I have been using for at least years so I don't actually recall exactly). I use it to make green tea as well as the intended espresso. I recently discovered a possible reason why it was ditched (a spot between the steam wand and the front has a hole the melted open). As far as I can tell, it hasn't effected performance (output temp is at 75 to 80 degrees C.). Long story short, it's been a great machine.
