A great monitor with lots of features
- October 23, 2022[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] For quite a long time, I’ve been trying to get my workspace set up with the ‘ideal’ equipment. In addition to my daily-driver computer (16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max Chip), I also use a 2021 12-inch iPad Pro (M1), and a gaming PC. So, I wanted something that would work as an external display for my daily productivity tasks, streaming video, gaming, photo editing, and video production. I’ve been using a 43-inch LG Smart Monitor because I wanted the larger size and I loved the built-in streaming features, but loved the idea of increasing my monitor size to this 48-inch beauty. This monitor is designed to work well for an immersive gaming experience. It has a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1ms response time. The maximum resolution is 4K and a viewing angle of 178º. The screen is not curved, but that isn’t a dealbreaker for me. The monitor has a single DisplayPort input, three HDMI 2.1 ports, an Optical Digital Audio Out port, one USB UP port, and two USB-A ports. Here are some observations I made while using the monitor over the first few days of owning it. The monitor has an extremely thin body. This makes it great for using on a desktop or mounting to a wall, but it does make it hard to pull out of the box or positioning without touching the screen. Without its stand, the monitor weighs 34.2 pounds (with it - weighs 42.6 pounds). So, in order to keep it in the best condition possible, I would recommend that two people handle it while getting it out of the box. This monitor can be mounted to a wall. It utilizes at 300 x 200 mm vesa wall mount pattern. So, as long as you have a mount that can hold its weight and features that size mounting bracket, there shouldn’t be any issues mounting it to the wall. This is the first monitor I can recall having that I had to connect an upstream USB cable to in order to have power provided to the USB ports. I typically use those USB ports to connect accessories such as lights to the monitor. But I found that you can’t provide power to those accessories without connecting the monitor with the USB Up port. I’m not saying this is a flaw in the design, but to me, it seems different for modern monitors. The back panel of the monitor has built-in lighting, which I love. I typically add an LED light strip to the back of my monitors but I didn’t have to with this one since they already exist there. The built-in lights aren’t as bright as the strips I use, but it is bright enough to add gentle ambient light to my desk area. I also love the addition of the remote control. It is a large, bulky remote and I was surprised to have it, but after using it for a few days, I’m really glad to have it. It would be nice if the monitor would auto-detect devices that are connected, but since it doesn’t seem to, the remote makes it very easy to access the input options as well as the menus for settings. I wish it was rechargeable, but I can overlook that as long as the batteries last for a while. It’s been very responsive with detecting inputs and it also provides an on-screen prompt to let you know when there is a device connected to an input. The monitor has produced a gorgeous picture for me — no matter what I’ve been using it for. The blacks have been very black and the screen is very bright. The colors seem to be very vibrant and there are a lot of presets to work with in the monitor’s menu system. Motion has appeared smooth to me and I’ve used the monitor for a variety of tasks — including gaming and photo editing. When I hooked the monitor up to my Xbox One X and PS5 I was shocked to see a difference in my game play. I could tell a difference in the refresh rate. Well I think I can. Everything seemed more fluent when playing. I really enjoy the easy switching from from device tot he other using the remote. I just need more room on my desk for all of my gaming gear so I can take advantage of the monitor for everything I use. So far, I’ve found that this monitor works well with my MacBook Pro with M1 Max, my gaming PC, and even with my iPad Pro. I have the MacBook Pro connected via a Thunderbolt dock to the DisplayPort. The gaming PC used an HDMI port and the iPad Pro connected to the monitor through an HDMI port via a USB-C hub. I did find that I had to change a setting on the monitor in order for the colors to look right on the video signal coming from the iPad. Overall, this is a great monitor with a lot of features to offer. I don’t have any major complaints.

An exceptional gaming monitor
- October 24, 2022[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Verdict. I love the size, image quality, and exceptional performance of this LG 48” OLED monitor. The connection options provide fantastic convenience and versatility. The features are setup for gaming convenience and rapid adjustments. It has also enhanced my productivity. It is by far the best monitor I have owned. First impression. First “wow,” it’s big! When the box arrived, I was worried that the monitor would not fit on my desk. Once I opened the box to confirm the measurements, the second “wow,” the edges are so thin! I was very worried about taking this thing out of the box, and potentially damaging the edges or popping pixels. I prepositioned the stand, managed to remove it from the bottom, and gently set it on the stand. The base stand feels rough or rugged… I love it, it gives the feeling of Spartan minimalism and solid quality. After installing the screws on the base, you can hide all the screws with two covers. I had not even turned on the monitor yet and I was already impressed with the design and craftmanship of this monitor. I also immediately notice the mat finish on the screen… nice touch! Setup. I connected my “work” laptop (a high-end gaming laptop) that I use for video editing with the included display port cable, and my gaming desktop with the included 8k ultra high speed HDMI cable (thank you for that!). Then I turned on the monitor with the giant remote. And the third “wow,” this screen is just beautiful… Productivity. For my work laptop, I am working on 125% scale for added comfort. It could be at 100% scale to have more screen real estate… but why?! I have all the space I could ever want already. Plus, I pushed this monitor as far back as I could on my desk because there is so much to look at, so a slightly larger font size helps. This monitor replaced a four-screen setup, so I have it setup with four partitions using the Windows auto-window snaping/sizing, and it’s literally like having a grid of four 24” screens side-by-side. It’s amazing. It’s everything I ever wanted in productivity. The image quality and processing are out of this world. This monitor is also a dream for stock charting and trading (see pictures). You can setup all your charts and a trading window to be most effective. Gaming. Playing first person shooter games on this monitor has been a dream. Advanced settings are easy to access with the remote to fine-tune your gaming experience: you can turn overclock on/off, adaptive sync, crosshairs, and black stabilizer. You can also set two settings as quick access on the remote control when pressing down on the volume knob. And you can setup two different gamer profiles with custom settings, and quickly switch between them by pressing the game button on the remote. I only had a chance to play games on it for two days, but so far it has been epic. Games run beautifully smooth, even at max settings. I played Gears 5 and Halo Infinite over the weekend. Gears 5 has some really dark scenes and it was no problem on this monitor. It’s the first time I go through dark scenes without thinking about what I could or could not see. The colors in general are brilliant. What you get with this monitor is epic performance: 4k resolution, 1.5M to 1 contrast ratio, 0.1ms response time with 120hz (O/C 138Hz). The ambient lighting on the back of the monitor can be changed to different static colors, or to flowing colors, using the remote. If you are a serious gamer, I don’t think you can get a better monitor (AND experience) than this monitor. What I love: - Exceptional performance: beautiful resolution and smoothness of graphics - Display port and 3 HDMI 2.1 ports for highest gaming performance - The best built-in speakers I have had on a monitor - Mat finish to minimize reflection… this has helped me a lot in the morning when the sun hits a window just right in my office - The monitor height is perfect - The headphone jack at the center front of the monitor is very convenient. I love that feature - The screen design is gorgeous: beautiful base, almost no bezel, and razor thin width - The settings are ample and easily accessible with the giant remote - The ambient lighting is easily adjustable and looks awesome - It’s so big! I love it, but make sure your desk has space for it What I don’t love. - Huge remote! I think I would prefer a slightly smaller remote, mostly because it’s not easy to hide it on a desk when you are not gaming. Nevertheless, I understand that the size is purposeful; it is really convenient to quickly make in-game adjustments with this remote… it sits just right and the keys are super functional. I would still say that the remote could be thinner and still achieve the same functionality. On the plus side, it will be hard to lose this remote! - I wish I could turn off the auto-brightness adjustment. Can this be enabled through a software update? I don’t notice it when gaming, but I absolutely notice the screen brightness change when I am typing documents, editing videos, or just looking at charts. It’s distracting. I would like just a single brightness for most normal tasks. I am currently getting around this by setting up a game profile with high brightness, and every so often, pressing the game profile to bring back the same brightness on the screen. Conclusion. The LG UltraGear 48” OLED 4K Monitor is amazing. I love it in every possible way, except for the auto-brightness adjustment. Gaming performance is exceptional, with settings well thought-out for gamers. I am rarely so impressed with a new product… Well, I am so impressed by this monitor! It easily gets five stars. The price tag is high, but the value is there if you want the best performance in a gaming monitor. I highly recommend it.

Replaced my 42 lg c3 oled with this monitor.
- December 13, 2023[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] 5 stars. I’ve used the LG 42C2 OLED as a monitor since they launched. Loved it, have only one gripe. Lack of pc focused features. Bought this 48 lg UG during black friday. I was skeptical due to the anti-glare coating. But for 699 decided it would worth exploring. Long story short you dont notice the anti-glare coating. The controls are a but unusual for a monitor but work well. Took me about todays of reading a researching to dial in the settings for both my gaming pcs to get thr color accuracy i enjoy. This has taken over as my main monitor and my c3 will now be my productivity monitor. Buy this next time it hits that sale price and thank me later.

VIVID GAMEPLAY, AMAZING IMAGES..
- October 23, 2022[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I have had the monitor for about a week, It's an amazing monitor for gaming and media (streaming video). First off, the screen is huge, it seems like it might be too big but once you set it up and see how much you can fit into one window it's very hard to go back to a smaller screen. The productivity is amazing, i am streaming a huge netflix window, browser window open, file folder open and there is still room to spare. The design is pretty cool, it is extremely thin, the LED lights on the side are nice and give of a nice afterglow against the wall. The remote is a bit clunky looking but it's pretty useful. It's nice to switch screen modes without fumbling for any hidden buttons on the underside of the screen. It's pretty easy to toggle between game modes or inputs, if the eye strain is too much it's simple enough to go to reader mode. The screen is vibrant and the blacks are pretty rich, the benefits of an OLED screen. It's like being at the movie theater in your own home, lol. The gaming is very SMOOTH, there isn't any motion blur that i noticed and i use the Display Port for a wider bandwidth. The GPU i have is the Nvidia 3080 and the screen takes advantage of the AMD freesync and the 120hz refresh rate. The refresh rate is awesome but combined with the dark blacks and vibrant color this monitor is a must for gamers and media streamers. The screen also features different modes that display, such cross hairs or my favorite FPS display mode. It's fun to see the high frame rate while you play. Definitely an awesome monitor with alot of features , just make sure you are ready for screen size and the space it will occupy. I have yet to feel any eye strain or headaches. Another bonus is the OLED screen does not give off heat, my old LED 34 inch was like having a heat lamp in your face. This one has no drawbacks yet that i can find.

Great OLED monitor.
- December 17, 2022[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] If you are interested in OLED and not looking towards the LG C2 TV, get this monitor if its on sale. Granted I purchased this during Black Friday deals where it went as low as $899 compare to its $1499 price tag (At that point go with the LG C2). If you are someone looking for something more than just HDMI 2.1 ports, you'll want this monitor since it is also equipped with DisplayPort 1.4 (if on sale). Truthfully if you want OLED, I recommend going for the LG C2 if this monitor isn't on sale. If you do need other ports and simply want a monitor without any of the SmartTV functionality, get this. But to me the regular price tag is a bit much for it. But note that 48" is a large size and I recommend at minimum a 31" desk depth or more. If ya think its too big, LG is releasing a new 27" oled next year for $999. One more thing, this is a matte finish (not glossy like the TV lineup).

Big Beautiful OLED
- July 26, 2024[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Excellent OLED picture quality. Blows away my old lcd monitor. Colors are rich and accurate. Black levels are nearly perfect and contrast is extremely high. Fast motion is very smooth especially at 120 fps. One downside is that it will go into power saving mode too quickly if the ps5 shows a black screen for a second, like when starting a game from the home screen. But it comes back on pretty fast so not a big deal. Obviously don't buy it if you don't have the real estate on your desk. 48" is no joke for a monitor. Works great as a streaming display too, hbo and Disney in 4K are very smooth.

Epic sim monitor
- March 31, 2023[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great monitors, do what they say they do. I’ve got them setup 11520x2160 resolution 120hz, although it has an option to overclock to 138hz and does work, I couldn’t get all 3 at that speed together. So if you’re buying 1 like a normal person it’s a great feature. I’m running all 3 on DisplayPort and manage a steady 84fps in iracing with settings maxed on an rtx4080 and 7900x3d. Image cleaning is nice feature as well after 4 hours of use when you shut the monitor down it will self clean then turn off. They do what they’re supposed to.

Wow, just wow!
- September 7, 2022[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I don't even know where to start. The UltraGear 48GQ900-B has really changed my perspective on monitors. Let's start with the basics. This is a repurposed 48" OLED TV which LG turned into a gaming monitor. It's a 48" UHD 4K display with a 1.5M:1 contrast ratio (1.2M:1 @25%APL). Refresh rate is 120Hz. It has a DisplayPort which I use, 3 HDMI inputs, Optical Audio out, and headphone out. It is NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium. The 20Wx2 speakers are impressive, but I have always used eternal speakers. The room I am in is fairly bright, and this display is just fine in that setting. My use for this monitor is some gaming, but more importantly my everyday monitor. I want to make that clear as gaming isn't my main focus, and to let you know this isn't just a gaming monitor. I have been using dual 27" displays for many years now. The dual LG 27UD69P's have been flawless, so I was skeptical is a single monitor would replace those. It's pretty large to be on my desk, and it dwarfs the 40" TV that I have (which I set up as a 2nd monitor but haven't found the need to use it). LG's OnScreen Control allows me to section off this monitor and open multiple programs at once. This is very important to me as a CPA as I need multiple programs open at once. I also watch a lot of content on my computer and interact on social media. I watch a lot of YouTube, and for me this monitor shines as I am no longer watching on a 27" monitor but instead basically a 48" OLED TV. I pretty much play games exclusively on Steam, and one of my favorites is DOOM. Loved it back in the day, and really enjoy its updated play. I also enjoy X-Plane 11. I tried out both, and I was very impressed. Absolutely no lag, crisp colors, and immersive gameplay due to the screen size. I also have a 40" curved monitor and this is much better. All of my testing was done without any technical tweaking. Expert gamers will do much more to adjust their gaming to perfection. If my gaming is a starting point, I really believe that as a true gaming monitor this is impressive. I absolutely recommend this monitor, and not just for gaming. It's an excellent monitor for everyday use, and no longer will I run dual monitors.
