More Information

"Your home is your castle. But, castles can be notoriously hard to heat. Thankfully, you've got the Nest Learning Thermostat. It uses learning technology to figure out your schedule and your heating and cooling preferences to reduce your energy usage and save you money. Easy to install, it connects with your existing home network over WiFi and can be controlled from your mobile device, laptop, or computer. With a larger display and thinner design, the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is easier to read and includes Farsight that offers even easier readability from across the room.

Nest offers additional convenience and functionality with the Works with Nest Initiative. You can use Nest to link up with other Works with Nest compatible smart devices: A smart garage door can tell Nest when you've left the house, a smart door lock can notify Nest about who's arrived home and what temperature they prefer, and smart appliances can go into energy saving mode when Nest tells them that you're away. Saving on your energy bill and creating a connected home is easier than ever with the Nest Learning Thermostat.

What you need to know:

  • Innovation upgraded: The 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is slimmer, but offers a big 2.08" 24-bit colour LCD display, with sharper 480 x 480 resolution that makes it even easier to read. With Farsight, it knows you're around and lights up so you can check the temperature, or time, at a glance from across the room.
  • Reduce your energy bill: Nest uses smart learning technology and learns your schedule and heating/cooling preferences over time. It then takes this data and programs itself in a way that reduces overall energy usage up to 20%. The environment and your wallet will thank you.
  • Smart savings: Nest is smart enough to turn down the thermostat when you're away at work, and it displays the Leaf icon to show you when it's at a temperature that's saving you money. Airwave automatically reduces air conditioning usage when indoor humidity isn't too high, so you'll get reduced energy bills while keeping the house cool.
  • Connectivity: Nest connects with your home's WiFi network so you can control it from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop from anywhere in the world. Compatible with mobile devices that use iOS 8 or later, or Android 4 or later with the free Nest app and Bluetooth 4.0 or set it up from your computer using USB connectivity and a web browser.
  • Remote monitoring: You can view Energy History on the Nest Mobile or Web apps so you can get detailed information about your energy usage and figure out how best to save. Plus, Nest lets you know something is out of the ordinary, like if the temperature is too low or too high, with an alert to your mobile device. You can even control your Nest Thermostat from your Apple Watch.
  • Weather aware: Nest monitors weather conditions so it can figure out how outdoor temperatures and weather affects your heating and cooling needs.
  • Works with Nest Initiative: Since Nest is smart and WiFi-connected, it's able to work with a variety of other smart devices to provide additional convenience and functionality, and the list of compatible devices is growing all the time.
  • Easy installation: As easy as installing a lighting fixture, Nest is simple to install, and probably in less than 30 minutes. If you'd rather let a professional handle it, you can contact a Nest Pro to install Nest, remove and recycle your old thermostat, and connect Nest to your WiFi network.

Nest works with over 95% of 24V heating and cooling systems, including gas, electric, oil, solar, hot water, geothermal, forced air, heat pump and radiant.

  • Heating: one, two, and three stages (W1, W2, W3)
  • Cooling: 1 and 2 Stages (Y1, Y2)
  • Heat Pump: with auxiliary and emergency heat (O/B, AUX, E)
  • Fan (G)
  • Power (C, Rh, Rc)
  • Whole home humidifier or dehumidifier (HUM, DEHUM)* - professional installation recommended
  • Dual fuel systems (heat pump with furnace)* - professional installation recommended
  • Common wire not required in 99% of installations

The Nest Learning Thermostat is not compatible with line voltage, millivolt systems or low voltage systems with incompatible wires. The Nest Thermostat is not compatible with some systems without a common wire installed.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is only compatible with low voltage 24 volt systems, not line voltage or millivolt systems. While most low voltage systems are compatible with the Nest Thermostat, here are some exceptions:

Incompatible systems:

  • Remote sensors. While the Nest Thermostat may be compatible with this system, it won't be able to gather data from existing remote sensors.
  • Proprietary systems. Proprietary systems use a serial communications protocol to communicate between the system and the thermostat. The Nest Thermostat can't communicate with serial protocols, though some proprietary systems can be wired with standard HVAC wires.
  • Some micro-controller based systems. Systems that use micro-controllers instead of relays are sometimes more sensitive to power sharing. If so, the Nest Thermostat may need a common wire to be compatible with these systems.
  • High impedance systems. Some systems with particularly high impedance can't deliver enough power to the Nest Thermostat over the HVAC wires. If so, the Nest Thermostat will need a common wire to be compatible with these systems.
  • Incompatible wiring:
  • Three stage cooling. The 2nd generation Nest Learning Thermostat is only compatible with systems that have one and two stage cooling.
  • International systems. Some international systems, such as Buderus boilers, have dry contacts or other incompatible wiring. These systems may require relay panels in order to be installed with standard American thermostat wiring.
  • Heat pumps with L wires. The Nest Thermostat doesn't support Service Indicator (L) wires.
Incompatible hardware:

Zone relay panels or control panels. Some systems have control panels or equipment interface modules that require a common wire to be compatible with the Nest Thermostat.

Here's a list of known panels that require a common wire:

  • Honeywell AQ25110B
  • Honeywell EMM-3
  • Honeywell TZ-4
  • Honeywell HZ311
  • Bryant 548F036
  • White-Rogers 36C03-300
  • Carrier HK42FZ011
  • Nordyne 624631-A
  • Nordyne 903915A
  • Waterfurnace ATV045A 110CIT

Some gas valves on systems vibrate or buzz when the Nest Thermostat is installed. This can usually be fixed by connecting a common wire.

Super satisfied!

The Nest Thermostat is simply a great all-round little product. The install was super easy. I am no handyman, but the easy to follow instruction made it look like I was. The programming of the thermostat was also a breeze. I now have it on a schedule and, with Google Assistant, I can change the temperature by voice command. Sweet!!! The product is compatible with most furnaces, but it is always better to double check. Hang on the your receipt, just in case.. I have it since Jan. 2019 and I am super satisfied! Thanks Nest!

Installation a Breeze

Read the instructions and then watched the video. After doing both then followed the instructions and everything went as it should - very easy to install. Setting up was easy and understandable - have the Nest Thermostat on both my smart phone and laptop. Both applications work well.

Support is non-existent

I needed professional installation because my system has a multi-speed fan. Setup an email through the nest website. Says that I will be contacted within 48 hours. Waiting over a month for the simply home installer to schedule an appointment. Nothing. When I call, the staff are rude, dismissive and arrogant. Emails are unanswered. Calls are useless. Don’t buy it if you need professional installation.

BEWARE!!! If you do not have a C wire - a DEDICATED power wire for the thermostat, IT WILL NOT WORK. You can believe what they say that you do not need one and upload a photo of the wires you have and they will still say it is compatible. IT IS NOT. NO Wi-Fi thermostat is compatible with no C wire. It will just shut down for hours to recharge itself and you will have no heat or A/C. Save youself the headache of researching it or calling in an expensive technician to tell you it needs a C wire. Installing a C wire is expensive and not an easy task - it is not worth it.

Great if it works...

i think all the new smart home technologies are great if they work. The idea of Nest is great i use it with the camera but the thermostat is very unstable. Doesn't matter if you turn off the "eco" mode, which is the saving energy mode, when the temperature drops outside in Canada, you want the heat to increase, it always maintain 22 degree even if the set point is 25. Freezing in the middle of the night because this so call smart system never turn the heat on. I have to tell my husband to reset it and reset it and reset it multiple times. Better use the old technology at least when you crank the thermostat up, the heat is on....

Nest Won't turn off heat

horrible product. the nest thermostat wont turn off when you put the heat as "OFF", sometimes it will turn off but then 5 mins later it would turn the heat back on. Customer service sucks. this is my 3rd time lining up for a queue cause the 1st one i got "disconnected" the 2nd time i got in and the customer rep named "David" immediately ended our session. As of right now im lining up for the online chat. I'm also on the phone waiting for someone to talk to. 40 mins waiting time right now. HORRIBLE SERVICE HORRIBLE PRODUCT.

love it! works great

don't get fooled by the price. it's a great thermostat. here's the run down.. easy to install. and it hooks up to your wifi. as you adjust the temperature in the house the Nest realizes what temp you like. so it effectively 'learns'. what I love about it is that you can be away and change the temp on your house. so you can be on a cruise in the Med and change your room temp at home via your smartphone. there are other appfs like "IFTT" that allow you to program the thermostat to change temps or send you an email if the temp rises or drops to a certain degree. check it out!

Learning feature

Overall, I like it, but if you are someone who likes to adjust the temperature many times a day and not at the same time every day, Nest has trouble learning when to automatically adjust the temperature. Also, there is no online manual you can download, you have to go on the Internet and search for whatever feature you are looking for.

Nest Smart Thermostat

Replaced our 20 year old "programable" thermostat. Learning feature seems to be working well, but have only had the unit for less than a month. Heat and cool setting is useful in a climate like Calgary. After some web searching I was also able to replace our humidity control. Much cleaner look replacing 2 old clunky white boxes with the nest thermostat.

I love it

I really like the simplicity, ease and elegance of this device. I can monitor and control my energy consumption from anywhere. Love the look and feel of it too!

  • from Medicine hat

Poor quality at a high price.

I am a professional technician and I refuse to install this style of thermostat. This is not compatible with some equipment. The link between the base and the front of the thermostat is unstabe. It doesn't reliably recognize equipment. Save your money. There are far better for less money.

Wants to be awesome

Work and live in high tech IOT, wifi, cellular, radar, mobile, etc. .. Initially, very excited to use NEST. Have NEST smoke/CO2 detectors already and they are fantastic. Has been a challenge to integrate with a standard 5-wire thermostat. Should not be this tough. NEST cooked the motherboard on our furnace. Luckily under warranty. If 3rd attempt doesn't work, will return. Have has HVAC experts and NEST on board from day 1. It's a simple common Low voltage 2-speed fan furnace. Expect more from Google.

3rd Gen Nest

We have only had the new Nest 3rd Gen wifi stat for just under a month and it is December, so far so good. Easy to install, works well with the wifi and feraponds well with the outdoor temp. and personnel settings. I like that it automatically lights up when you walk in a dark room. So far so good, time will tell

  • from Toronto, ON

Don't buy this Theromstat becasue your heating system has to charge it and if that doesn't work you will have to pay for an HVAC person to come and fix the problem which will cost you big money. Buy the ecobbee which does not have that flaw.

  • from Edmonton, AB

Hey i had this installed and it was great for two months. know it keeps shutting off because of a bug with an update. i am just happy i was home when this happened because when it shuts down your heat won't go on and in a canadian winter that is not good. i tried calling nest but they got "disconnected" three times now when i was on the phone. If it is not broken, don't fix it. Your thermostat you have now is perfect, save yourself the 300 bucks.

  • from Edmonton, AB

Okay product. Would not buy with my money

I got this iteam for free for switching energy providers. It work good for a few months, now it keeps getting bugs and it's winter with no heat. Do not buy this

Just works

Super simple to install; savings 20-30% over last year on energy for AC/heating costs; simple interface. Works from computer or iphone/ipad perfectly.

  • from Mississauga, ON

Easy to use

Great product, easy to install and use, wifi works great. When the outside temp 29c, this unit shows 20c as outside temp, they need to work on this.

  • from Vaughan Ontario

Not impressed

I don't know how long it takes to learn, but, it's now the middle of August and ours was installed fall of 2015. I like it colder at night for the winter but stay consistent for air conditioning. I'm constantly having to change it back to what it was set at. This was installed by a licensed electrician.

Nest Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat 3rd Generation

Great item and worth the value. Wi-Fi is an awesome feature. Easy access using app from anywhere.

  • from Abbotsford, BC

Great Product

I just bought and installed the 3rd Gen Nest to replace my 8 year old Honeywell (the touch screen didnt work any longer) After reading the install booklet, going to the Nest compatibility website, it was very easy to install. We have a heat pump system with a gas furnace backup, and it works great, no issues at all. The webapp and iphone app work great, it found our wifi instantly, hooked up to the weather thru our postal code, very easy to set up and program and control remotely. Set one day, then copy and paste. Well done Nest! I would highly recommend it. I can now set the emergency gas furnace to kick in a 2 deg, program the circ fan to come on for 15+ min. Cool senses when you walk by and you have the option to display the temp, or time (analog or digital)

  • from Kanata, ON

Awesome So far

First of all, no other product can beat the slim look of Nest. It perform well in my home which is 2500 sq.ft. The temperature shows accurately in my device. I initially bought honeywell touch thermostat, not happy with it. Glad I went with Nest. This one has most of the feature that ecobee offers. I dont need remote sensors, so my choice is very easy to make.

  • from Woodstock, ON

Great Thermostat

Easy to set up and install. Works exactly as described. Love being able to adjust from my phone and keep track of usage. It's pricey but looks great and works awesome.

  • from Markham, ON

Slight improvement in design, no major difference

Great product, the updated Nest app makes it great. However, no real integration with the rest of nest products and the overall functionality between this (3rd generation) versus the previous 2nd generation is minimum or none. I like the overall look of the product, and it does add a greater look to the house, but for this upgrade price I don't see the point in releasing this 3rd gen product.

  • from Calgary, AB

Good features, some missing though

Love the fact you can control your thermostat from your smart phone. Auto away feature is really nice as well. Missing hold functionality for some reason, also like any complex software system there will be bugs. Check out the nest community before buying for issue people have with it.

  • from Kitchener, ON

So far so good

I purchased a 2nd generation Nest back in the summer, it didn't seem to get enough power and had my furnace making a weird sound, I disconnected and returned it as Nest Support couldnt figure it out the issue. (I suspect I needed a common wire, although Nests says I did not.) I noticed the 3rd generation came out so figured, what the heck, I will give it a try, its my furnace vs the AC now but I have had zero problems with this one, furnace sounds normal, so my fingers are crossed this baby still works when I fire up the AC next year. Nest Support is great, set up is simple, it looks awesome, and its a really cool gadget to have for home. Who thought a thermostat could be so exciting? haha

  • from Calgary, AB

Great Thermostat

Easy to set up and it looks great! I installed it 3 weeks to replace both a thermostat and a humidistat (humidity control), so instead of two ugly rectangular controls now I only have this nice-looking thermostat. I had to install a relay to control the humidifier (Nest does not provide a dry contact to control the humidifier as my old humidistat did) and also provide the "C" (24V Common) from the furnace control to the Nest (recommended so the Nest has a stable power supply). I recommend this product but you might need professional installation depending on the kind of furnace and humidifier you have: Nest provides great support on its website to determine compatibility.

  • from Dollard-des-ormeaux, QC

Great product, unit didn't get enough power, nest support was amazing and reimbursed a nest professional service to fix the issue.
