Explore a massive library of games for the Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s most successful console, and that’s no surprise considering the amazing library of Xbox 360 games that came out over its lifetime. For much of its generation the Xbox 360 was considered the premier platform on which to play the biggest 3rd party titles—not to mention Microsoft’s stable of huge exclusive franchises such as Halo, Gears of War, and Forza. With a catalog of titles spanning every genre imaginable, there’s something for everyone on Xbox 360.

Genres of Xbox 360 games

The Xbox 360 library spans every popular genre in gaming. Here are a few of the most popular categories of games.

Action/Adventure

Action/Adventure games are typically third-person experiences with a strong focus on combat and exploration. Some major action/adventure titles for the Xbox 360 include Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption, and the Batman Arkham series.

First-person shooters (FPS)

FPS has quickly become the most dominant genre in gaming, and the Xbox 360 is notably at the forefront of the FPS revolution. These games revolve around well-crafted gunplay from a first-person perspective. Not only did Microsoft help define the genre with entries to its titanic Halo series such as Halo 2 and Halo 3, but it also became synonymous with the biggest FPS franchise ever—the Call of Duty series—during the Xbox 360 generation.

Role-playing games (RPGs)

Traditional RPG’s tend to feature character-driven stories in an open and immersive world. They often take place in a fantasy setting, and include elements of inventory management, character levelling, and open-world exploration. Notable RPG’s for the Xbox 360 include The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Sports/Racing

Sports and Racing titles are among the most popular games for Xbox 360. Everyone is familiar with sports such as football, hockey, basketball, and motorsports outside of video games, which make them easy for gamers to pick up. Microsoft’s Forza franchise is considered one of the premier racing sim experiences. The Xbox 360 is also home to all the major sports franchises such as Madden (football), NHL (hockey), and FIFA (soccer/football).

Strategy/Puzzle

Strategy/Puzzle games are best suited for players who enjoy problem solving and analytical thinking. There are real-time strategy games such as Halo Wars, turn-based strategy and simulation experiences such as Civilization Revolution, or even simple, relaxing puzzle games such as Tetris or Peggle.

Platformer/Arcade

Platformers and arcade titles on the Xbox 360 often build on the side-scrolling action of earlier video games in new and modern ways. Some critically acclaimed platformer/arcade titles include Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Trials.

Backwards compatibility with Xbox One

Unlike its competition, Microsoft has made a strong commitment to making many Xbox 360 games playable on its newest Xbox console, the Xbox One. This means that you can even take your Xbox 360 game discs and simply insert them in an Xbox One console to initiate a download. While not every title is compatible, the list is currently over 500, and growing every month. The library of games being brought to backwards compatibility is clearly focused on the biggest franchises and most popular titles, such as Gears of War, Assassin’s Creed, Fable, Halo, and Call of Duty just to name a few.

Games for the whole family

The Xbox 360 library features a huge selection of games that are appropriate for all ages, including many that have co-operative and multiplayer experiences. The LEGO franchise is a perfect example of kid-friendly games where co-op gameplay means siblings and friends can get in on the action together. There are also a host of licensed games from companies like Disney and Pixar that feature all your favourite characters from the biggest cartoons and animated films.

If you have the Kinect camera peripheral for Xbox 360, there are a host of interactive experiences suitable for all ages as well. The Just Dance series is a prime example of multiplayer fun for the whole family with Kinect.

Xbox 360 games and consoles on sale

One of the best reasons to consider the Xbox 360 library of games today is their price and accessibility. With a massive selection of games to choose from, it’s so easy to go back and pick out the highlights of the Xbox 360’s lifetime—and since these are no longer new releases, you can pick up so many more titles for a much smaller investment. Players may even want to consider picking up new Xbox 360 hardware just to experience the now-historic back catalog of Xbox 360 games available.
