What types of air conditioners are on sale?

There’s an air conditioner sale at Best Buy, including evaporative, portable, and window AC units from a variety of manufacturers. Many can perform other functions as well, like purifying, heating, and dehumidifying.

There are air conditioners of all sizes that can be used in different rooms of the home, to cool both large and small spaces.

How do types of air conditioners differ?

Portable air conditioners are floor standing units that connect to a hose and window kit to exhaust hot air outside while keeping cool air in. They can be moved from room to room, usually sitting on castors, and work effectively for large areas. However, they can also be large and difficult to put away in the off season; and can be loud as well. Some require that you drain the accumulated water from condensation while others recycle it back into the air.

Evaporative air conditioners use water to cool the air naturally, and sometimes ice or ice crystal boxes to speed up the process. They do not require window kits. However, they are best used in hot and dry climates with humidity under 50%. Otherwise, you can get too much moisture in the air, which can cause mold and mildew.

Window air conditioners, meanwhile, fit directly into the window opening to exhaust hot air outside and bring cool in. They are smaller, often cheaper, effective, and can be quieter than portable units. However, they need to fit properly in the window opening and require a bit more time in installation.

There are also mini split air conditioners on sale that provide a permanent solution for both air conditioning and heat, though they require professional installation.

What should you consider when choosing an air conditioner on sale?

To make the most of a window or portable air conditioner sale, look at BTUs (British Thermal Units), which measures the amount of heat an air conditioner can remove from the air over a period of time, relative to the room’s size. A 14,000 BTA air conditioner, for example, is sufficient for cooling a 640 square-foot room.

Decide if you want cooling for one room or want to move it around. You might want multiple window (or portable) air conditioners to place on different levels of the home. If you live in a dry climate, an evaporative air conditioner might meet your needs, and they are generally less expensive. Find one that uses ice crystals to help speed up cooling.

Make sure the window AC or window kit with a portable AC can fit properly in a horizontal or vertical window and is easy to install. Check the dB level to ensure it runs quietly.

You might appreciate units that can also heat, purify, and/or dehumidify the air as well. Other appreciated features include fan and temperature adjustments, and timers so they run only when you most need them to save energy and electricity.
