Apple’s new M3 chips take the MacBook Pro higher and further

With the M3 series of chips, Apple continues to evolve its own silicon to help its computers run with the utmost in both power and efficiency. It remains an ARM-based system on a chip (SoC), this time built on a 3-nanometre architecture that makes it the smallest processor ever built for the Mac. The M3 comes in three different models: M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, providing a range of options for performance.

The smaller chip size doesn’t mean you have to give something up in return. The M3 processors are capable of delivering 30% better performance and 50% more efficiency over the previous M1 chipsets. To put that in perspective, it’s like having the performance of an M1 chip with only half the power necessary to run it. This is ideal for creative workflows for content creators, students, entrepreneurs, teachers and other working professionals who need the best tools for the job.

Graphics power takes a bigger step forward to enable all creative pursuits, featuring new technologies like Dynamic Caching, which allocates only the exact amount of memory needed for each task. The newer GPU also delivers hardware-accelerated mesh shading, plus ray tracing—a first for the Mac—both of which enable creative apps and games to render more precise details and accurate realism.

What do you get with the new MacBook Pro?

The new MacBook Pro models with M3 chips come in three variants in two sizes. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 is the base model with an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and starting at 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. It comes with a MagSafe 3 charging port, two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI port, one SDXC memory card slot, Touch ID sensor and FaceTime HD camera. The Liquid Retina XDR display is on par with the best Apple offers, coupled with the backlit Magic Keyboard, Force Touch trackpad and six-speaker stereo sound with Dolby Atmos support.

The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models running on M3 Pro or M3 Max significantly bump up the specs across the board, starting at 18GB of RAM, and more CPU and GPU cores, as well as an extra Thunderbolt 4 port. There are extra configuration options for processing power, memory, and storage, letting you determine what the best mix would be for what you need.

You also get a newer colour option with Space Black, which is only available in the M3 Pro and M3 Max versions.

    Working faster and longer

Better efficiency means the chance to get work done without lag or technical issues getting in the way. The M3 chips don’t come with a trade-off in battery life, either. The base 14-inch MacBook Pro can last for up to 22 hours per charge, whereas it can be between 18-22 hours for those running on the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips.

Apple also built the M3 chips with artificial intelligence and machine learning in mind, thanks to a faster neural engine that clocks in at 60% faster than the M1 chips do. If you’ve ever been interested in playing some of the most visually striking games available, these chipsets also make it much easier for the MacBook Pro to run them.
