Uneven heating resulting in burnt toasts
- June 17, 2025Extremely frustrating using this toaster. It is such a disappointment as we lived our old Smart toaster (2 slices model) which died after 8 years of use and was excited to upgrade to this model. However the performance is poor, my toast is always burnt on the edge while the rest of it isn’t done yet. For sourdough bread it can’t go higher than 2 without burning which is ridiculous as the rest of it hasn’t crisped up yet. For waffles it burns even on setting 1.

Elements stopped working
- September 11, 2019Did my research and bought for the features. Figured we'd splash out on an expensive toaster,as we were switching from a 2 slice to 4 slice to make mornings go faster. It worked well for one year. One month after the warranty expired, the elements started to quit working. Now,out of the 4 elements, only one works on the "toast" setting, and a different one works on the "bagel" setting. Completely regret donating my old cheap toaster that served us well for over 10 years to buy this expensive piece of junk.

My 3rd Breville Smart Toaster
- July 24, 2023I just bought my 3rd Smart Toaster because it has the useful functions not available on other toasters and has a good aesthetic. But I am disappointed that a company with a reputation like Breville can't fabricate a more lasting toaster. Unless it's planned obsolescence ! The fatal occurrence is when all lights start flashing and when the toasts won't come up anymore. The mechanical parts still seem to function but it looks like the software becomes disabled. I would have hoped that unplugging and replugging the toaster would reset the software but NO, you need to get a new one !

Greatly disappointed with BTA830XL!!
- May 13, 2020I am another disappointed purchaser of this toaster. I don't remember when I purchased it, but it was probably a year or so ago. I had owned a Cuisinart toaster for l8 to 20 years and never had a problem, but wanted to update my kitchen a bit ,so I bought this modern looking appliance - model BTA830xl. Now the inner heating elements no longer work, I saw them arc, and I will be looking for a new toaster. I had expected this toaster to last a long time or I would not have spent so much money on it. I had always heard that Breville made a great product but I no longer believe this hype. Beware if you are thinking of buying this appliance. Don't!!

Shorting my house
- November 10, 2021I purchased this toaster 9 months ago and in that time it shorted out my house on 3 occassions and i had to pay for an electrician. Nothing wrong with the electrics in my home, this issue it appears is with the 'just a bit more' button. Returned and replaced with the same toaster on monday 8/11/21, used it wednesday 10/11, and when i used the 'just a bit more' function it cut the power again. Seems to me this is a significant fault with the product. i now have the inconvience AGAIN of having to travel back to the store to return the product. Now what? i cannot believe this has happened to the most expensive toaster in the range.

Love it.
- January 10, 2023I love the fact I can fit my homemade bread in it without having to cut the slices in half. I love the lift and look feature so that I can check on progress. I love the bar that lights up to show how long is left so I can time my eggs to be done at the same time. I love the ability to toast a little bit more rather than having to start from the beginning. I love the controlled lift at the end so that my toast isn’t flung across the counter or even onto the floor. We had one before but eventually, like all toasters, the heating elements failed. We decided to economize and bought a cheap well-known brand and hated it so much we had to give in and go back to the Breville.

My Ideal Toaster
- August 14, 2020I first saw this toaster at a hotel in Sydney and after using for my stay there I was impressed. The unit has lasted me 6 years and the left side element has burnt out, which is a little short of normal toaster life, however... I love the "Look" feature that allows you to peek and see the progress of the toasting without interrupting the cooking process. If it needs a little more then the "A Bit More" feature with give you about 30 seconds of extra toasting without burning. I will say it is not for everyone and for those who are impatient this toaster will frustrate them as the motor lift takes its time. As soon as I can get my hands on one again I will be getting one again.

Total garbage
- December 1, 2020I bought it over a yer ago and one side stopped working...so no warranty any more.Anyway...I did not purchase it because of warranty.I bought because of name and presumable high quality. This is absolutely nonsense. This product is seriously expensive and crappy. Again, one side is not workin, timer is lottery...sometimes pops up in 60 seconds sometimes in 2 minutes or anything it decides. Unpredictable Product is lacking qulity and if you want to buy it for high reliability then this is not for you.... Will never buy this brand anymore...i wish you could give 0 stars but I can’t so my 1 star is 0 stars.

Great features....lousy toast
- March 15, 2023Purchased toaster end of December 2022. Toast came out burnt on the lightest setting. Called beginning of January and was told we could get a replacement. New toaster arrived yesterday. Instruction book suggested a setting of '3.5' for the first slice......toast was burnt. Reduced the setting to '2' for the second slice.......not burnt but too dark for our liking. Further reduced the setting to '1'....came out what I would call 'medium'. Too bad this machine can not produce a lightly toasted piece of bread. In addition, we noticed that one side of the slice was perfectly even, while the bottom corners of the other side were darker. We will not be buying any Breville product again.

pretty, pretty useless
- June 7, 2014I bought this less than a year ago and when ever I try to stop it early or put it back in for a bit more all the lights start flashing and then shuts down. I have to unplug and pull my toast out at what ever level its done and finish it in the stove as it takes about 30 minutes unplugged to reset. also, doesn't brown evenly and I have had to reduce the level week by week where I am getting black toast now on only setting 3. bringing it back today. Im upset because I really like the colour. we splurged just for the colour and I feel stupider than the day I chose to shell out money just for a colour.
