Irascible and headstrong by nature, but gentle at heart, veteran medical practitioner Dr. Jules Bedford (Thomas) saves his best put-downs for his physician son, David (David Spielberg). David, the elder Bedford asserts, is more involved in the practice of business than in the practice of medicine. While Jules' sensible daughter-in-law, Jenny (Shelley Fabares), tries to keep the family peace, receptionist Helen (Didi Conn) and nurse Molly (Dena Dietrich) keep the practice running with the help of Lenny (Mike Evans), a young, wisecracking medical intern. Notable guest stars found receiving treatment at The Practice include Edie Adams, Victor Buono, Vic Tayback, Lucille Ball, and Danny's own daughter Marlo Thomas.
