An Apple Watch for less

What to expect with the Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE is the most affordable smartwatch in Apple’s lineup, and a good entry-level choice. It still only works with Apple’s other products, and is compatible with iPhones going back to the iPhone 8.

Apple’s budget-friendly smartwatch comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes in a variety of different bands, as well as both GPS and LTE cellular models.* It offers many of the activity and health tracking features equipped in other Apple Watch models. That includes a heart rate monitor, sleep tracking, exercise tracking, and access to the apps you want to download and install.

This watch is also ready to go for a swim in both clear and saltwater, so it will fit in nicely in a pool or at the beach.** It can also control the audio content you’re listening to, as well as play games or stay in touch with friends and family via calls and text messages.

What’s new with the Apple Watch SE

The new Apple Watch SE 2022 runs on a different processor this time compared to the previous Watch SE. The S8 chipset is the same as that in the Apple Watch Series 8, giving this watch a 20% speed boost over its predecessor. Despite that, Low Power Mode can boost battery life up to 36 hours, doubling the standard 18 hours the watch can run on under normal conditions.***

Apple’s redesigned Compass app is new to the Watch SE, including features like Waypoint and Backtrack. With the watch’s GPS signal, you can set waypoints along the route for a hike or walk in remote locations. With Backtrack, you can find your way back along the very same route you took to avoid getting lost.

This version of the Watch SE also comes in different colours: midnight, starlight, and silver. New straps and bands are also available to personalize the look you want while wearing it on your wrist.

Detecting a car crash

The Apple Watch SE is equipped with a new sensor that enables Crash Detection, a feature that can tell when you’ve been in a vehicle collision. It looks for an impact or air pressure change, including if airbags go off, while the watch’s microphone listens for sounds of the impact and initiates a safety alert.

If this happens, the Watch SE will pop up a notification to request whether you want to contact emergency response. If you can’t or don’t make a selection, it will call authorities itself to send help to your location. This works on both the GPS, which routes the call through your paired iPhone, and LTE cellular versions of the new Watch SE, which make the call independently.
