What customers are saying

The headphones offer a neutral, balanced sound profile well-suited for music production and critical listening, with detailed audio and good instrument separation. However, some users find the bass to be overpowering at times. Build quality is generally good, though the plastic swivel joints may break over time. Comfort is a mixed bag, with some users reporting the ear cups as stiff and uncomfortable, especially for those who wear glasses. Overall, the headphones provide excellent sound quality at an affordable price, making them a popular choice among audio enthusiasts.

Good value - general listening and tracking vocals

    Reviewed by - May 6, 2022

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've had these headphones for 3 years and am glad I made the purchase. I had listened to the M30x, M40x and M50x in the store but felt the M40x offered the best value. They were noticeably better than the M30x - with more clarity across all higher frequencies - but I did not think the M50x were worth the extra cost or dramatically better. I rely on the M40x when listening to music, and when tracking vocals, guitar or medium-to-super-high frequency instruments in the studio. I would not trust these exclusively when mixing tracks, but I do use them occasionally, to get a good all-round check on the balance and sound (in addition of course to checking the mix on the car stereo). They are perhaps a touch quiet in the low-end and I do not use them if I am tracking bass or drums (see below for my alternative recommendation for that). They are pretty light weight, which is great if you're in the studio doing tons of overdubs or doing the marathon podcast. One thing that I really like about this set is that the cable is detachable from the phones. In case the cable has issues, you don't have to get the whole thing repaired. That said, I've had no technical problems or obvious signs of wear and tear, despite regular use for 3 years straight. The cable also has a nice, screw-on 1/4-inch adapter. Not sure if this is the same with all packages, but mine also came with earbuds, with a built-in microphone. That has been my workhorse around the house and for working at home. Nice durable, fabric cable too. One of the headphones I was also comparing this to when deciding whether to buy was the (trusty) Sennheiser HD 280 PRO. Those are a little cheaper, and a worthwhile purchase for more focused tasks. I use those *exclusively* when tracking bass and drums - the noise cancellation alone is incredible - and they have a big warm, low-end sound. Because of the good low-end, however they don't deliver a good all-round sound, particularly if you want to hear those nice airy high frequencies. That said, I recommend them for a quick check on the low end of your mix, or when tracking bass or drums. They're a little heavy, but that's for another review ... needless to say, I bought that one as well :)

    Unbeatable at this price point

    Reviewed by - April 21, 2016

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased these after doing a lot of research online. Even at full MSRP (you can find them lower on occassion) they're fantastic headphones. Unlike the reviewer that couldn't hear any bass I find the bass to be perfectly balanced and certainly present. Some songs I would say the bass is still a little too prominent, but that is only playing through my iPhone so it may be the way the sounds is mixed by iOS. I've worn them for hours at a time with no discomfort. They seal out sound quite a bit and they're closed back so there isn't much sound leakage for the people around you. I would recommend these to any of my friends and family without hesitation.

Nice rich sound for the price

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - November 5, 2021

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased these to replace mine 30 year old Sony digital headphones which have now develop chain buzzing in one of the headsets. These particular were highly recommended on the musician forums I belong to. Well, they have a very rich and full sound. They deliver a very flat response with tight bass and clear highs. They fit tighter than my old sonys but than again these are new and my old sonys have been well used. If you have a large head, your ears might get fatigued after long usage. I like a tighter headphone that will not slide off my head while playing my guitars so they work for me. Having 2 included chords with sufficient length that twist and lock into the phones prevents them from pulling out accidentally. I really like these headphones and the price isn’t out of reach for most folks.

    An upgrade for me

    Reviewed by Ron G. - April 23, 2020

I previously had a pair of M30 headphones that were used for years. The only real downside was that the ear pad coverings kind of disintegrated over time. Accidentally damaged the permanently attached cable, so I decided to buy the M40X. Great sounding with their neutral sound (good for mixing and production work as well as generally accurate reproduction) and a bit of an upgrade from the M30, collapsible, and comes with two detachable cables. Very pleased. I've ordered a set of Brainwavz ear pads which should help make them a tad more comfortable for longer sessions.

    Don't pay more than $99

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - October 25, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Price got inflated more than $99. Really like the sound signature, not the biggest fan of the length of the stock cable, but a shorter cable can be shipped from Best Buy, but is sold separately. Don't get the shorter cable unless you plan on wearing these outside. I prefer the sound signature of these over the M50x's since these are flatter. Sure, they're "boring" but also more accurate. I no longer like bloated bass and prefer accuracy above anything else, lets me hear stuff I haven't heard before. Also wish the pads didn't suck so much, get better ones that have a flat surface for your skull from Amazon.

    Sounded great, until . . .

    Reviewed by - February 28, 2017

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Sounded really good until they snapped in half making them unusable. This is a common problem with people who use them a lot. AT offered to fix them at my expense, though it is their problem, meaning their headphones would of cost me double. Keep looking unless you like expensive paperweights.

    great sound stage

Reviewed by Dean innes - October 29, 2016

I'm not a professional or audiophile I just love headphones aand music, that being said I really like the sound stage on these headphones they are studio headphones and can separate the vocals & instruments very easily, the build quality on these is very good not great but very good I'll start off with the pros . Pros light weight feels durable and sturdy enough for its weight and last I like that you can very easily change the ear pads if you don't like them they are ok but I can't use them after and hour but I have glasses I have to take.break most of the time Cons the hinge and ear cups are very loose I think it's for when you are in the studio and need to take off a ear cup off one ear. Overall I like theses

    Very comfortable!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use these with my digital piano. Excellent sound quality, blocking out all outside noise. Very comfortable, and I really like the long, curly cord.

    Music production help

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - February 21, 2026

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Audio sounds clear and great! The folding of the headphones is kinda weird and odd to get use to but it helps me a lot with my music production!

a little too bass heavy for studio use

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - August 23, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought these for use with my keyboard workstation, a Yamaha montage M6. While they are certainly comfortable to wear, I felt that they did not provide an accurate sound stage for use with music production. I ended up returning them for a pair of Beyerdynamics. If you’re into a deeper base sound, then these are definitely for you. However, the low middle ranges can be a bit overpowering at times by emphasizing the low end in music, a little too much, at least for my taste. Of course, if you are all about the bass (no treble), then these might be perfect for you.
