Good choice

We Bought it last week. For the price it is an amazing Machine.

  • from Stouffville,ON

it makes great coffee

Even though it's the oldest model from Breville, it still makes very good coffee and the coffee from my old machine tastes like water now. It doesn't need water filter or cleaning tablet so low maintenance. It takes time to learn making milk froth.

Very good for the price

Had exactly the same model till it died nine years later. Bought the same one as it makes coffee the way we like it.

We Love It!

We use this on a daily basis and it works great! The coffee is extremely hot and although it does take quite awhile to froth milk, the steamer works very well. So far, no issues whatsoever. Overall, I would highly recommend this - for the price, it's a wonderful machine.

It wasn't for me

I had been shown how to work an espresso machine but it was a much more expensive machine. I thought if this one worked for me, it would be great. A lot of the reviews were good. So I purchased it. I was very disappointed but perhaps it's because I wanted it to be like the [price]machine. I found the steam wand to be too short. I think it was because it was set back, so you couldn't really put your cup under it. It blew out way to strong and you had to have LOTS of foam all the time. I like to heat my milk but no so much foam. I wanted to put the coffee into a mug. The mug didn't fit under the machine, so I had to remove the tray or brew into the small espresso cups, then pour into a coffee mug, the add the milk, then it was not hot enough. Then water leaked while it steamed. I think I just expected too much. If it was the only machine I had tried, it probably would have been great, but it wasn't. I'm sure those that love it, love it. But it wasn't for me.

Great value

This is a great machine that gives a lot of value and I thoroughly enjoy it. If you're new to espresso machines like I was the Roma is a great place to start and it delivers great espressos and cappuccinos. Pulling a straight espresso is very easy and you can do so right away in the ceramic cups that come with the machine. I will share with you my experience and all the research I did since I bought the machine a month and half ago: 1) Experiment with the grind in the beginning, as the manual says, it needs to feel like fine sand. This machine seems to like it on the most coarse "Espresso" setting of my Cuisinart burr grinder. The shot pull should take about 20 - 30 seconds if it's done right. 2) The double-walled filters means less concern about the perfect tamping pressure. but will usually result in wet puck at the end. This is normal.. don't panic 3) The plaster tamper/scooper is okay given that you don't need 30 lbs of tamping pressure with the double-walled filter, BUT it's slightly too small in diameter so you always have a bit of grounds that need to be retamped around one side. This is a bit of a pain and can be messy as the grounds on the exposed side can overflow over the upper surface of the tamper. Like some others I have ordered a 51mm tamper to replace it. 4) Preheat the machine a good 20 minutes ore more before you want to use it to get good quality steam. This is not an issue for straight espresso (although you should always warm your cup first). 5) For cappuccinos, remove the "foam enhancer", the metal sleeve over the steaming wand. It creates tons of foam but your pitcher will overflow with foam long before your milk has had a chance to warm up sufficiently. 6) When you first turn on the the steamer some water will come out. Always run it into an empty cup first, until you see just steam. 6) Research how to use the steam wand properly especially for a cappuccino. Fill the pitcher a third to half full of milk, based on your tastes. For this machine I insert the wand just below the surface and against the wall of the pitcher. This creates a nice vortex and lots of microbubbles. Once the base of the pitcher starts to get hot (I always hold the pitcher by the base for this reason), plunge the wand into pitcher to mix the bubbles in for a few seconds (until your pitcher is too hot to hold of course). More expensive machines create enough foam in just a few seconds apparently but this one needs the full cycle to achieve the desired result. 7) For a cappuccino, froth your milk first and then pull the espresso so that the coffee does not cool while you're busy making bubbles. 8) When you finish, you will need to drain and rinse the drip tray, empty the filter, clean steam wand (run some steam through to clear it of milk and wipe it down with a damp cloth) but this will become routine and take just a moment as you get used to it. Enjoy!

Good for the price

The machine work well ,make good espresso latte and capuccino Only a little noisy and the level of the water to see depends for the light angle

  • from Sainte-agathe-des-monts, QC

Very durable

I have used it for about 5 years. Great machine for making espresso and cappuccino. It makes nice crema and froth the milk nicely for cappuccino. Sometimes I make americano too, just let the coffee run through the portafiller for double the time for a cappuccino. It's recommended the machine be decalcified once in a while with some special solvent. I make it simple by using vinegar plus water. Overall it is working well for me. Never fails and produces tasty coffee everyday.

Love this machine. Ours is 4 years old, is used at least once a day, and still runs very well.

Breville Roma Pump is the best

This is my second one, the 1st was a refurbed hand me down from family and had many years behind it before it finally gave in and started leaking. I will always go for Breville. Good solid quality at not an exuberant price ;). Doesn't feel like it's shakig all over when being used!

Breville Café Roma Pump Espresso Machine

It does the CREME nicely, the water temperature needs to be hotter, I realize in the manual it says to warm up your espresso cups, I found that strange. Is it just the machine I bought,? NO, a friend of mine bought the exact one, in fact we purchased one each the same day and their machine also does not get the espresso hot enough....would I recommend it to anyone else? not likely, would I ever buy another one? I do not think so. I can not comment on their other espresso machines, but I have owned 2 other brands of espresso machines before this machine, also in the same price range, I did not need to warm up or heat up the espresso cups....sorry Breville you only get a 3 star.

  • from Red Deer, AB

Love it!

I bought this machine today because my expresso machine broke and this machine was a good price. I am very pleased with it. It is much quieter than the competition. It made excellent expresso, and frothed the milk just fine. The end result was a great cappuccino. I would definitely recommend this machine.

Good machine

We have had the machine for 2 years, and have absolutely no complaints! Works perfectly - no problems if the setup is OK, and grind is good.

Great quality

Makes great espresso. Very reliable, own it for more than 5 years.

Great choice. Thanks Breville

I have to disagree with some of the bad reviews here and wonder, if A) they are getting the right grind for their espresso? B) they are cleaning the steamer regularly? C) they are pressing the water tank all the way down? If they've done all these correctly and don't have a dud machine (which does happen; so take it back and replace it), then it's easy to make espresso just as great tasting (if not better) than your local independent coffee house, and far surpassing the taste of anything from that ubiquitous global chain that over charges and pretends with it's silly names for coffee sizes, that it's from Europe. I could not be happier with this purchase. This machine is far less expensive than most espresso makers on the market, yet it delivers great espressos and lattes right from the very first time I used this good looking little number. Yes, it's loud (it's an espresso machine, not a drip coffee maker) and yes, the steamer drips water before it goes to steaming (just put a cup underneath until it starts to steam before putting the milk/cream under it and make sure you use the freshest possible milk/cream to get a good froth). And yes, it drips a little coffee after you finished getting the espresso...again a cup will handle the after drip. There isn't a decent espresso maker out there that isn't noisy and a little messy, but these are all things you can mitigate. It's really not that hard. I haven't purchased a latte or espresso outside my home since buying this machine in June '13, and I've saved a lot of money getting fresh home made espresso from a machine a fraction of the cost of most. So thanks Breville. I couldn't be happier and the machine has long since paid for itself by now.

Good coffee but... Bon café mais...

Coffe is realy good but don't forget it turned on because there's a metal part that will break behind the heating block eventually. This one may just burn an then it's done... Le café est très bon avec beaucoup de crèma mais il ne faut pas oublier de l'éteindre parce qu'à long terme il y a une section du circuit qui se rompt à l'arrière du block de réchaud. Le réchaud lui même peut faillir aussi après un certain temps...

I have had this machine for 8 years now, one latte every morning, and it still works like a dream. The only time it has made a poor quality espresso is when i havent ground the bean properly or when I havent tamped the espresso properly. A beautiful caramel gold crema every time.

Good for 3 weeks then burnt rubber smell/taste

This machine was ok until it started making bad burnt rubber/plastic tasting and smelling cups. The water receptacle and bin also smells as bad, Now its worthless

LOVE my Cafe Roma

I can't believe anyone would give this product a bad review! I LOVE THIS MACHINE. It's aesthetically beautiful, but more important it makes GREAT coffee. The steamer is amazing and handy to clean the machine elements with after every use as well. Easy to clean, easy to use and yeah ok -- a bit noisy, but no more than any other expresso machine. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. *****

Excellent Espresso Machine!

Great tasting crema espresso coffee! High quality and stylish stainless steel looks, with a powerful 15 bar pump for rich flavour crema espresso, cappuccinos and lattes. Froth hot chocolate milk too. Read instructions and practice to get to know your machine. Tips: 1) Buy the Crema Espresso Grind Coffee. 2) Be sure to press removable water tank down until you hear a click, or it will not run water to make coffee. 3) Clean after each use, especially if you use the milk frother, run steam to clean it, and use supplied pin, milk may dry and clog hole. Makes great tasting coffee, excellent espresso machine!

Shame on Breville

Shame on Breville for producing such an inferior product! The absolute worst Espresso machine i've ever used. Loud, vibrates, messy. Very limited amount of espresso per brew. Good if you are only making one. Make sure no one's sleeping when you operate. Will never buy another Breville product again.

Great taste

Just tried the first cup, this is my best decision so far on a espresso machine my 3rd one. The crema is by far better than the others I have experience with, and I claim I now make better espresso than most barista The machine itself looks very solid. The only comment I have is the water tank level is a bit difficult to see, and it needs a push to get the tank into the right position so that water can flow into the machine. As long as it does not affect the espresso quality, I don't care. Well deserve a 5 stars

Breville Cappuccino maker

Great unit.Easy to setup and to use. Warm up time is short. My kids can now make the various coffee drinks for the adults. They use the steamer for their hot chocolate and it foams easily.
