    Avoid

    Reviewed by - November 21, 2024

Device keeps freezing followed all troubleshoot but thr device itself is now just expensive plastic. Support wasn't helpful and said I was out of warranty ironically as the device breaks. I'd advise to go with a different brand for half the price and netter build quality. Elgato feels like cheap plastic for a fortune of the price it is worth.

Cam Link works out of the box with right camera

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - February 22, 2022

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been using both a built-in camera and Logitech webcam for the past two years for both online work meetings and online Dungeons & Dragons games (via Zoom). We started streaming some of our D&D games on Twitch, so I wanted to use my Canon Rebel T5i compact DSLR for a better video. I checked the Elgato website and noticed that my camera was not listed, which I read to mean that neither Elgato nor Canon confirmed the T5i would work with the Cam Link. So I bought it anyway to try it. I can confirm that the T5i does not work as expected for video calls and live streaming. So I replaced the Canon with a Sony A7C. I can confirm that the A7C works, as long as you use a micro-HDMI (not mini) to HDMI cable. The Cam Link is plug-and-play for both Mac (my home computer is a late 2013 Macbook Pro 15) and Windows (my work computer is a 2021-22 HP Elitebook). Elgato recommends using their Camera Hub software for Mac (free download from their website), and it works fine on my 8-year-old laptop. The Cam Link is pretty wide, so Elgato included an 8-inch USB-A extension (pictured) so users like me can plug it into the the USB port next to the HDMI port. One thing to note is that Elgato states on its website that the Cam Link only works in a root USB port, and my attempt to use it with a USB hub (mine is not powered) did not work. The video image through the Cam Link looks really good, especially when I use a low-aperture lens to blur my background in-camera. I suggest checking your camera settings to make sure that it doesn't shut down during a longer session (this has to do with the camera, not the Cam Link). I ran a four-hour game over Zoom and didn't run into any issues while using the Cam Link. I chose to give the Cam Link five stars because the Cam Link itself is plug-and-play, and Elgato maintains useful information on its website. This dongle exceeds my expectations from both set up and effectiveness, and it even works with my dinosaur of a computer. The included short cable makes it easy to plug into any USB-A port. It may seem pricey, but I find the support and the ease-of-use make it worth the cost.

Perfect for my Distant Learning classes

    Reviewed by - April 22, 2020

I bought the Cam Link 4k to connect my DSLR and live stream on Twitch, but ended up using it for a complete different purpose. I'm a teacher currently teaching through Distant Learning because of COVID-19 and being able to connect my DSLR and use it as a webcam has been nothing but awesome. I teach at a high school and have been giving cooking classes by streaming in the evening so students could be distracted by everything that is going on. With the Cam Link4k connected to my personal laptop, I am able to move my DSLR and point it at the stove, cutting board, etc. so the students are seeing what I am doing. The quality of the stream is also a lot clearer and crisper thanks to being able to connect my DSLR. Before connecting the cam link4k, I had to lug around the laptop, lift it up and try to aim the webcam to the stove or cutting board, making my cooking class practically impossible and annoying. If you plan to live stream, the Cam Link4k is a game changer that you will need in your arsenal. Your streams will look a lot better and have a higher quality stream.

Good for Streaming, Recording and Webcam...ing

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - September 25, 2020

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought it to use my dslr as a webcam because they were getting expensive nowadays and I wanted one a bit higher quality than that of a normal 720p webcam. With my T6i hooked up my video feed looks great, zoom meetings look great and Twitch streams look great. I definetly would recommend to those looking for an upgrade or jumpstart a stream. Hopefully things will be more available soon!

    Cheap and Awesome

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - April 18, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] These are awesome for a couple reasons. First, they are super easy to use. Literally just plug and play. 9 times outta 10 they work on the first try. The only time I had a minor minor hiccup what is fixed by putting it into a different USB slot on my computer. Turns out not all USB slots are equal some have a tad bit more power and that's the secret. Second reason these are awesome is because the 4K quality is insane. I built four or five complete YouTube/podcast Studios so far and have you to these in all over them multi camera set ups, etc. these are so awesome. And they're cheap.

    Very spotty performance

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - November 26, 2021

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Elgato Cam Link 4K is the go-to device for HDMI camera capture, because of it's availability, price and ease-of-use. Unfortunately it also has very spotty behavior that leads to dropped frames, having to unplug / replug the unit to get video, and sometimes totally freezing the output video stream. I was able to resolve some of my issues by replacing the device (so, defective? or counterfeit? who knows), but it still periodically got unhappy. I think part of the issue may be that the device gets extremely hot during prolonged use (30+ minutes). Ultimately I replaced it with a much more expensive but more reliable device from another brand.

Excellent capture quality and super easy setup

    Verified BuyerReviewed by - December 20, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Elgato Cam Link 4K works exactly as advertised. Setup was plug-and-play on my computer and it immediately recognized my camera with no drivers needed. Video quality is sharp, smooth, and low-latency, making it perfect for streaming, video calls, and content creation. It handles 4K input cleanly and performs very well at 1080p for streaming. The small form factor is great—no external power supply or bulky box required. If you want to turn a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or camcorder into a high-quality webcam, this is one of the best solutions out there. Highly recommend for anyone doing streaming, recording, or professional video calls.
