Blend your recipes with ease using a handy immersion blender

What is an immersion blender?

An immersion blender, often also called a hand blender or stick blender, is a tall, stick-shaped kitchen tool with blades on the end that can quickly and conveniently blend ingredients for soups, salsas, sauces, dips, smoothies, and more.

Place it inside the container with the ingredients, turn it on to the desired speed, and manually swirl it around to blend the ingredients into a smooth and uniform liquid.

They come in various colours, from basic black, silver or white, to funky blue or red, and with single, two, three, or even five speed options for tackling particularly tough ingredients.

Some come with attachments that click onto the stick, like a whisk or chopper, to perform other kitchen tasks too, like whisking egg whites or chopping onions. Many also include a blending jar.

When would you use an immersion blender?

An immersion blender comes in handy for both large quantities of ingredients and small. If you’re making a big pot of soup, stick the immersion blender right inside the pot and blend it there, saving time and extra dishes.

Conversely, if you want to make a single smoothie, you can throw ingredients, including frozen fruit and ice, into the mixing cup and blend it up, then pop the blade portion of the immersion blender off and wash it without having to whip out your full-sized blender.

While hand mixers are designed for mixing ingredients, like eggs and batter, or creaming sugar and butter, immersion blenders are ideal for smoothing out ingredients for dips, soups, and sauces that are more liquid in form.

What to look for in an immersion blender?

The best immersion blenders will be powerful enough to accomplish tough tasks, like crushing up ice in a smoothie or blending through cooked meats, vegetables, potatoes, and frozen fruit. Look at the number of speeds the immersion blender has, and the power of the motor, to ensure it will be able to blend, crush, and puree all of the recipes you have in mind.

Look for one with an ergonomic handle that is comfortable to hold and has a soft grip, and an easy click system so it’s easy to remove the blades for washing.

You might only want one for a single function, but a hand held blender that comes with additional attachments can be useful for quickly whisking or chopping very large or small sets of ingredients without having to take out a large blender or food processor as well. Consider looking for a set with plenty of accessories.

A sturdy blending jar is useful as well, and they often include measurements on the side so you can blend and drink a smoothie right from the cup or make a batch of homemade hummus and store it in the fridge, right in the cup.
