This lens is considered part of Nikon's "Holy Trinity" which includes the 14-24, the 24-70 and the 70-200. I bought this lens because I really enjoy wide angle shots. As you'll find in other reviews all over the web, this lens has two limitations. The first is that it is not light and the second is that it doesn't allow for use of a standard filter for creative uses or protection. There are some filters that exist now, but they are not standard and also not cheap. Think back to what you love about photography and what types of photos you enjoy. If you're like me and you enjoy ultra wide angle shots then you won't be disappointed with this lens. It is ultra sharp and built like a tank.

  • Excellent lens for scenic and Night Photography
Verified BuyerReviewed by AuroraChaser - October 26, 2013

I live in Alaska with huge wide open spaces and Northern Lights (aurora). I have used lesser quality lens like the Tokina 16-28 F2.8 on my D800 and was pleased until a friend of mine showed me his Nikkor 14-24 F2.8. What a difference. The build quality is similar but the glass is by far better in the Nikkor. I was frustrated with the Tokina shooting wide open during aurora storms and getting soft edges and "coma- elongation of stars" in the corners. With the Nikkor 14-28, that problem is long gone. The lens is sharp from corner to corner and the dreaded coma is minimal. I can't wait for the aurora season to pick up. This is one of nikons flagship lenses that every aurora chaser should have in there arsenal.

  • Better than my-- literal-- eye (s)!

Increbdible; Impeccable-- my favorite overall lens, at the moment! Which is only somewhat unfortunate once I became aware that there is no way to protect the glass aside from taking necessary precautions while in use; and being sure that the lens cover is ALWAYS secyred on it/ replaced immediately after shooting with it/ when not in use. Wouldnt sugggest shooting where one would expect to find and/or come into contact with sand, debris,or anything of this sort. Rain is fine; still weather proof! just not like hail storm/ earth quake/ sandstorm- kind of weather.
