FAQ About Add-On Security Cameras
You've outfitted your home with a shiny new security camera system, but it doesn't cover all the areas you want. Whether you want to keep an eye on the backyard, nursery, or basement, you can expand your home security system with an add-on security camera.
What are add-on security cameras?
An add-on security camera is an additional camera that can be added to an existing surveillance system. Unlike stand-alone security cameras, add-on surveillance cameras cannot run on their own and require a main surveillance hub or DVR to operate. When choosing an add-on security camera, ensure it's compatible with your existing surveillance system.
Why would I need an add-on camera?
Security camera packages initially come with a select number of cameras. Depending on the size of your home, you may want additional cameras to survey other areas, inside and out. Many add-on cameras feature a weatherproof design, offering the flexibility for indoor or outdoor installation.
Should I choose a wired or wireless add-on security camera?
Wired add-on cameras require a connection to the security system's central hub or DVR via additional security camera cables, which may limit camera placement and create an unsightly jumble of cords. But, because of their constant connection, wired cameras are less susceptible to signal loss or interference. Wireless add-on security cameras, on the other hand, transmit video signals to a wireless receiver over your home's WiFi network. Although they're wireless, these types of cameras still need to be plugged into a power outlet and may suffer signal loss if your WiFi goes down. The type of add-on camera you choose will largely depend on your existing surveillance system and what compatible add-on cameras are available.
