What is Nintendo amiibo?
Nintendo amiibo figures and amiibo cards contain data that can be wirelessly transferred to the Nintendo Wii U console and 3DS line of handheld consoles. This data works with select video games to add special characters and bonuses. amiibo can also store data so you can bring your personalized character to a friend's house and play it there.
How do amiibo work?
Through the magic of NFC (Near Field Communication) technology you can wirelessly transfer data from the amiibo to a Nintendo Wii U or any of the 3DS handheld consoles. (Wireless transfers for the original 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS require a Nintendo 3DS NFC Reader/Writer accessory, which is sold separately.) The extra in-game features you get from this transfer vary depending on the amiibo and game.
What kinds of features can I add or unlock with amiibo?
An amiibo can add a character into a game, provide bonuses or special items, level up or customize characters, or unlock new adventures. Since the list of possible features is long and varied depending on the amiibo and game it's best to check the Nintendo amiibo website for the latest info.
Do amiibo only work with Nintendo gaming systems?
Yes, amiibo are only compatible with Nintendo systems. There are a few special amiibo characters that work with Skylanders SuperChargers, but those characters will only work on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of the Skylanders SuperChargers game.
