Jewelry Boxes Overview

While it seems like a jewelry box is a pretty standard item, there are actually many different types from which you can choose.

Types of jewelry boxes

Jewelry boxes come in all shapes and sizes, from square or rectangular, to heart-shaped, oval, or upright ones that look like miniature armoires or cabinets. There are wooden jewelry boxes, leather, crystal, even nickel-plated, in finishes like walnut, black, transparent, and mirrored.

Some have features like a slot for inserting a photo, a travel carry pouch, or a mirror. There are boxes for holding jewelry from events (e.g. Holy Communion) that make great gifts. Designs can include drawers and/or compartments, hooks for bracelets or necklaces, and pillows for earrings or rings.

Other designs include ones that can be mounted on the wall (in your closet, for example, or above a vanity), watch boxes, and travel boxes.

Do I need a jewelry box?

Jewelry boxes are a no-brainer for anyone with expensive jewelry collections, family heirlooms, or otherwise sentimental items. But they are also great for organizing costume jewelry, and neatly storing any kind of jewelry away when you aren’t wearing it.

Suitable for both men and women, they can store ringsneck chains and necklaceswatchesbracelets and charms, and more. Kids can benefit, too. In a girl’s jewelry box, your little one can store homemade jewelry, like friendship bracelets.

What should I look for when buying a jewelry box?

Particularly when housing expensive items, make sure it has soft material like velvet inside to prevent scratches and damage.

If you own a lot of jewelry, consider a jewelry armoire or cabinet-style box that can organize numerous items in pull-out drawers and on pillows, and hang neck chains and necklaces so they don’t get tangled up with one another, or other items. These are good if you have larger jewelry items that might not fit as neatly in a small box as well. Whichever you choose, look for a box with divided compartments to neatly store bracelets separately from necklaces, studs separate from dangling earrings, and so on.

For travel, consider jewelry storage that’s smaller like a pouch, folder, or roll-up. Or look for a jewelry organizer that has a removable section for carrying a few items in your suitcase when needed.

If you have a collection of nice watches, opt for a watch box that can accommodate them all. Or, if there’s a precious watch in your jewelry collection, look for a jewelry box with a dedicated spot for it.

For sentimental or pricey items, consider a jewelry box with a lock, or a built-in safe, for protecting them against thieves or prying eyes.

Gather up all the jewelry you own, divide it into categories, and search for a suitable jewelry box that can accommodate them all, and look good while doing it.
