What are king size beds and who are they best for?
King sized beds are spacious beds that measure 76 inches wide by 80 inches long (193 x 203 cm), making them technically the second largest sized bed (California kings are not as wide at 72 inches but they are longer at 84 inches, making them ideal for tall individuals or those who prefer more length).
King sized beds are ideal for couples who sometimes let their kids or pets sleep with them, including even the largest of dogs. However, there's no reason why a king-sized bed can't be appreciated by couples or singles, too, who just like to sprawl out and enjoy the luxurious spaciousness they provide.
While it's tempting to get a King-sized bed, keep in mind that they're recommended for rooms that are at least 12 x 12 feet in size. If your room is smaller than that, it could become overwhelming.
What types of king beds are available?
King beds and king bed frames are all the same general size but can come in a variety of set-ups. Platform king beds are popular because you can store lots of items underneath, maximizing the space in your bedroom.
You can also put two twin beds together to create what is called a Split King bed, allowing two people to comfortably sleep together but with their own mattresses, ideal if one person likes firm while the other needs softer.
From modern and contemporary to transitional, traditional, and rustic, there are plenty of design options when it comes to styling of king beds. Some come with a headboard and/or footboard along with the frame while others are sold on their own in case you prefer to use a headboard you already have or don't want one at all.
What should you consider before choosing a king size bed and bed frame?
While sizing is standard, consider the height beyond just width and length. Higher platform kings mean you can still store items like out of season clothing, books, or other goodies in storage underneath, thus not sacrificing storage space.
King beds come in wood, metal, steel, or even fabric or faux leather upholstered to add to the desired look. Choose based on what will match the décor; if you don't plan to use a bedskirt or other bedding to cover the frame, consider opting for upholstered (this might be tougher to clean, though).
Some frames have wood slats so you can throw a mattress on top without needing a box spring. This, along with lower height overall, is best if young kids or babies are sleeping there with you, to ensure the bed isn't too high off the ground.
Meanwhile, if you or your partner is over six feet tall, or you have a large dog that sleeps at the foot of the bed, go up to a California king bed size, provided the room is large enough to accommodate one.
