FAQ
An integrated amplifier with a built-in phono input is a convenient choice for most turntable setups. It combines the preamp and power amplifier in one unit, so you can connect passive speakers directly.
You need a phono preamp if your turntable does not have one built in and your amplifier lacks a dedicated phono input. A phono preamp prepares the turntable’s signal for the amplifier.
A turntable can connect to an amplifier when the amplifier has a compatible phono input or when an external phono preamp is used. Check whether the turntable has a moving-magnet or moving-coil cartridge and choose compatible equipment.
Look for a phono input, support for your cartridge type, speaker connections that match your speakers, and additional inputs for other audio sources. Bluetooth, optical, or USB connectivity may also be useful if you plan to include digital devices.
Yes. An integrated amplifier or stereo receiver can power passive speakers when its output connections and specifications are compatible with the speakers. Powered speakers, however, generally connect directly to the turntable or phono preamp without a separate power amplifier.
