FAQ
Common connections include HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC and optical audio. HDMI ARC and eARC connect a compatible TV and soundbar through a designated HDMI port, while optical uses a separate digital audio cable. Some soundbars also have HDMI inputs or an auxiliary input. Check the connections available on both your TV and soundbar.
Channel labels describe the audio configuration. In a 3.1-channel system, the first number represents three main audio channels, and the second indicates a dedicated bass channel. A third number, such as the final two in 5.1.2, indicates height channels. Soundbars may use physical speakers, virtual processing or a combination, so check how each configuration is implemented.
Some soundbars include a separate subwoofer, while others have built-in bass drivers or support an optional compatible subwoofer. A wireless subwoofer receives audio without a cable running to the soundbar, but typically still needs a power outlet. Compatibility with an optional subwoofer depends on the soundbar.
Depending on the model, soundbars may support stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. Format support also depends on the source device, content, TV settings and connection type. HDMI eARC supports certain high-bandwidth audio formats that optical connections cannot carry.
Many soundbars support Bluetooth playback from a compatible phone or tablet. Some also offer Wi-Fi streaming through features such as AirPlay or supported music apps. Available streaming options vary by model, and certain features require an app, an account or a subscription.
