FAQ
Start with a correctly sized basketball, supportive athletic shoes with good traction, and comfortable clothing. A ball pump with a compatible needle is useful for maintaining air pressure. You can practise dribbling without a hoop and use a school or community court for shooting, so a home hoop is optional.
Choose by the player's age, hand size, and league requirements rather than experience alone. Size 5 has a 27.5-inch circumference and is commonly used by children aged 9–11. Size 6 has a 28.5-inch circumference and is commonly used in women's and girls' basketball and by boys aged 12–14. Size 7 has a 29.5-inch circumference and is commonly used by boys aged 15 and older and in men's basketball. Younger children may need a smaller ball. Check with the coach or league before buying.
Outdoor basketballs typically use durable rubber or covers designed for rough court surfaces. Indoor basketballs generally have leather or composite covers suited to smooth gym floors. If you plan to play in both places, choose a ball explicitly labelled for indoor and outdoor use; not every composite ball is designed for pavement.
Look for a rim height range suited to the player, a backboard that fits your space, and clear setup instructions. A lower setting can help younger beginners practise shooting without straining to reach a regulation-height rim. If regulation play is your goal, check that the rim reaches 10 feet. Place portable hoops on a level surface and fill or secure the base exactly as directed by the manufacturer.
Use the pressure range printed on the ball or listed in its instructions. A compatible pressure gauge or ball pump with a gauge helps you check inflation accurately. Follow the manufacturer's directions for inserting the needle, add air gradually, and avoid exceeding the stated pressure.
