FAQ
A subwoofer handles low-frequency audio, including bass notes, drum beats and movie rumbles. Some soundbars have built-in bass drivers, while others include a separate subwoofer or support a compatible add-on subwoofer.
A wired subwoofer receives audio through a physical cable, while a wireless subwoofer receives audio wirelessly from a compatible soundbar. Wireless models typically still need a power cord. Subwoofer compatibility varies, so soundbars generally require a model designed for their system.
Common connections include HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC and optical audio for TV sound, plus Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for music playback. Available connections vary by model. HDMI eARC supports higher-bandwidth audio formats when both the TV and soundbar support them.
Depending on the model, controls may include bass level, separate subwoofer volume, equalizer settings and preset sound modes. These settings may be available through a remote, an on-screen menu or a companion app. Some models also offer a night mode that adjusts bass and dynamic range.
The first number describes the main audio channels, and the number after the decimal indicates the subwoofer channel. A 2.1 system has left and right channels plus a subwoofer channel, while a 3.1 system adds a centre channel. A 5.1 system also includes surround channels. An additional number, as in 5.1.2, indicates height channels. These labels describe the audio layout rather than the amount of bass.
