FAQ
RCA cables are commonly used with stereo receivers, amplifiers, CD players, televisions, DVD players and older gaming consoles. Some turntables also use RCA connections. Check the input and output labels on each device to identify the cable type you need.
For analogue stereo audio, white usually identifies the left channel and red identifies the right channel. Yellow typically marks composite video. Component video commonly uses green, blue and red connectors, while coaxial digital audio often uses orange. Match connectors to the port labels as well as the colours.
Composite video carries the video signal through one RCA connection, usually marked yellow. Component video separates the video signal across three RCA connections, typically labelled Y, Pb and Pr. Neither connection carries audio, so a separate audio connection is needed.
RCA connectors are used for both formats, but the cables and ports serve different purposes. Analogue stereo audio typically uses a pair of RCA cables for the left and right channels. Coaxial digital audio uses a single 75-ohm RCA cable connected to compatible digital audio ports. The shared connector shape does not make analogue and digital ports interchangeable.
An analogue stereo RCA connection uses two plugs, one for each audio channel. A standard stereo 3.5 mm connection combines both channels in a single plug. An RCA-to-3.5 mm cable can link compatible analogue audio inputs and outputs, such as a device’s headphone output and a stereo’s auxiliary RCA input.
