Best Storage Expansion for PS5

A growing game library can make console storage feel small surprisingly quickly. Between a sprawling adventure, a favourite multiplayer game, and the titles everyone else in the household wants to keep installed, choosing what to delete can become an unwelcome part of game night. The Best Storage Expansion for PS5 collection brings together options for making more room, whether you want a few favourites ready to launch or space for a much larger rotation. The right choice depends on how you play as much as how much you download. If you regularly switch between several large games, additional internal storage can keep more of them immediately accessible. If you tend to finish one game before moving on to the next, external storage can give you a convenient place to keep installed game files without downloading them again later. Even disc-based games need installation space, so storage expansion can be useful whether your shelves are full of game cases or your library is entirely digital.

For more space to install and play PS5 games directly, look for a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 solid-state drive that meets the console’s requirements. Not every M.2 drive is suitable: the interface, physical dimensions, capacity, and cooling solution all matter, alongside performance. A sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s is recommended, but that figure alone does not confirm compatibility. Check the full specifications, including whether the drive comes with an appropriately sized heatsink or needs a compatible one added separately. Effective heat dissipation is required, and the drive and heatsink must fit within the console’s expansion bay. Capacity is worth considering beyond your next purchase, too. Someone who keeps a small selection installed may need less room than a household juggling sports games, racing games, and several lengthy adventures. Leave some breathing room for future releases, downloadable content, and updates rather than choosing a capacity that only just covers today’s library. A compatible internal upgrade is particularly practical for players who want their expanded collection available from the console’s game library without repeatedly moving files between drives.

External USB storage serves a different purpose and can be a useful choice when convenience, capacity, and value are the main priorities. A compatible USB drive can store PS5 games, but those games must be transferred back to the console’s internal storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD before you can play them. Supported PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage, making this option especially useful for anyone who still returns to older favourites. An external SSD generally offers faster transfers than a portable hard drive, while a hard drive may provide more capacity for the money. Check console compatibility, connection requirements, and the included cable rather than judging by capacity alone. Think about the setup around the console as well: a compact drive can sit neatly beside it, while some larger external drives require their own power supply. Storage expansion can also make a thoughtful gift for an avid player, particularly when you know whether they want directly playable PS5 storage or somewhere to keep games between sessions. Matching that everyday need is what turns extra space into something genuinely useful, from keeping a shared household’s favourites installed to having a familiar game close at hand for a quiet weekend.
