Brake Upgrades for Towing
Get your towing setup ready for the road with trailer brake controllers and electric brake assemblies from Best Buy Canada. Compare control options and replacement parts to find the right fit for your trailer. Before you buy, confirm compatibility with your vehicle, trailer brakes and axle specifications—brake upgrades do not increase your rated towing capacity.

FAQ
Start with an inspection of your tow vehicle and trailer braking systems by a qualified technician. For a trailer with electric brakes, a compatible controller and correctly sized brake assemblies are key parts of the setup. Replacing worn parts restores function, but does not necessarily improve performance beyond the original specification. If you want to upgrade the tow vehicle's pads or rotors, choose parts explicitly approved for your vehicle and towing use.
A proportional controller senses deceleration and adjusts trailer braking output accordingly. A time-delay controller builds output according to preset timing and power settings when the brakes are applied. Both need correct setup. Check compatibility with your trailer's brake type, number of braked axles and vehicle wiring before choosing.
Check the axle manufacturer's specifications, brake diameter and width, mounting-hole pattern, and left- or right-hand position. If the kit includes hub drums, also confirm the wheel bolt pattern, spindle, bearings and seals. An axle weight rating alone is not enough to establish fit, and a higher-rated assembly does not increase the trailer's load rating.
Yes. Self-adjusting brakes help maintain shoe clearance during normal operation, but they still need inspections for wear, wiring damage and correct operation. Initial adjustment and break-in may also be required. Follow the brake manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions.
No. Adding a controller or changing brake components does not raise the manufacturer's towing, payload, axle or combined weight ratings. Keep the loaded vehicle and trailer within every applicable limit, including the hitch and tires.
Requirements vary by province or territory and may depend on trailer weight and other conditions. Check the current rules for every jurisdiction where you plan to tow, including any breakaway-system requirements. Your vehicle and trailer manuals may also specify braking equipment that your setup needs.
Brake components are safety-critical, so use a qualified technician if you do not have the required training, tools and testing equipment. Installation may involve vehicle-specific wiring, programming, brake adjustment and controller calibration. Have the complete system checked before towing.
